En el año 1979 en plena dictadura militar durante un concierto de Mercedes Sosa en La Plata se la llevaron detenida a ella y a todo el público que estaba allí escuchándola cantar, después de esto se vió obligada a abandonar el país y se exilió en Francia y España. En teoría, Mercedes Sosa podía entrar y salir del país, no tenía causa judicial alguna, pero fué acusada de comunista, trotskista y subversiva por el gobierno militar de Jorge Videla, imposibilitada de ofrecer su repertorio ya no podía cantar. En un país en que la vida humana no tenía valor alguno y cientos de ellas se perdían en la oscuridad de las mazmorras, los usurpadores del poder pensaban que la canción con contenido era peligrosa. Había que acallar a los cantores, como una manera de silenciar a la población. Fueron años durísimos y de gran tristeza para Mercedes que siguió cantando en los principales escenarios del mundo porque ya era una cantante conocida mundialmente. Posiblemente fue un error de los militares dejar que una voz como la suya fuese por todo el mundo denunciando la situación por la que estaba pasando la Argentina a través de sus canciones. Y por fin después de varios años de exilio pudo volver a cantar en su patria en el Teatro Opera de Buenos Aires en una serie de conciertos entre el 18 y el 28 de febrero 1982 que fue registrado en este maravilloso disco que sería todo un hito en la música de argentina y también en la carrera de Mercedes porque dejaría de ser considerada una cantante folclórica para convertirse en una cantora universal. Era la primera vez en la historia de la música argentina que una cantante unía en un mismo escenario a artistas venidos del folklore, tango y rock nacional. Después de la serie de 13 conciertos el almirante Lacoste dijo ¿Quién dio permiso que Mercedes Sosa cante en mi país?. Mercedes salió de nuevo rápidamente hacia Madrid donde tenía su residencia para hacia final de año ya volver al país definitivamente. León Gieco se equivocó al decir en aquel triste día del 4 de octubre de 2009 que "En este día Mercedes Sosa ha entrado en la eternidad" cuando en realidad ella ya había entrado en la eternidad aquel dia del 18 de febrero a las 22:45hs del año 82 cuando se plantó en el escenario con valentía y coraje y dijo: "Me llamo Mercedes Sosa y soy argentina" y conteniendo la emoción comenzó a cantar aquellas canciones de denuncia con los militares aún en el poder y sabiendo que la estaban acechando. Desde ese dia en que Mercedes cantó por fin para su público argentino empezó a cambiar el rumbo del país... pero esa es otra historia.
