Although most recognized for his work on the polio vaccine, author Charlotte Jacobs speaks about the man behind the lab coat and some of Salk’s other aspirations. http://global.oup.com/academic/product/jonas-salk-9780199334414
In the first complete biography of Jonas Salk, Charlotte DeCroes Jacobs unravels Salk's story to reveal an unconventional scientist and a misunderstood and vulnerable man. Despite his incredible success in developing the polio vaccine, Salk was ostracized by his fellow scientists, who accused him of failing to give proper credit to other researchers and scorned his taste for media attention. Even before success catapulted him into the limelight, Salk was an inscrutable man disliked by many of his peers. Driven by an intense desire to aid mankind, he was initially oblivious and eventually resigned to the personal cost--as well as the costs suffered by his family and friends. And yet Salk remained, in the eyes of the public, an adored hero. Based on hundreds of personal interviews and unprecedented access to Salk's sealed archives, Jacobs' biography offers the most complete picture of this complicated figure.
Charlotte D. Jacobs, M.D. is the Ben and A. Jess Shenson Professor of Medicine (Emerita) at Stanford University. She has served as Senior Associate Dean and as Director of the Clinical Cancer Center, and is the author of Henry Kaplan and the Story of Hodgkin's Disease.

Made by the National Foundation of Infantile Paralysis, this film shows the war against Poliomyetis, and the introduction of the vaccine developed by Dr. Jonas Salk. At this point the vaccine had not yet proven its effectiveness, and tests were ongoing. At the 1:39 mark, Immunoglobulin injections are shown, a stop-gap measure in fighting the disease. At 1:59, iron lungs are seen being used to treat respiratory patients, and later both rocking bed and chest ventilators are shown. At the 7 minute mark various rehabilitation of survivors of infant paralysis are shown, including use of braces and wheelchairs.
Poliomyelitis, often called polio or infantile paralysis, is an infectious disease caused by the poliovirus. In about 0.5% of cases there is muscle weakness resulting in an inability to move. This can occur over a few hours to few days. The weakness most often involves the legs but may less commonly involve the muscles of the head, neck and diaphragm. Many but not all people fully recover. In those with muscle weakness about 2% to 5% of children and 15% to 30% of adults die. Another 25% of people have minor symptoms such as fever and a sore throat and up to 5% have headache, neck stiffness and pains in the arms and legs. These people are usually back to normal within one or two weeks. In up to 70% of infections there are no symptoms. Years after recovery post-polio syndrome may occur, with a slow development of muscle weakness similar to what the person had during the initial infection.
Poliovirus is usually spread from person to person through infected feces entering the mouth. It may also be spread by food or water containing human feces and less commonly from infected saliva. Those who are infected may spread the disease for up to six weeks even if no symptoms are present. The disease may be diagnosed by finding the virus in the feces or detecting antibodies against it in the blood.
The disease is preventable with the polio vaccine; however, a number of doses are required for it to be effective. The United States Center for Disease Control recommends polio vaccination boosters for travelers and those who live in countries where the disease is occurring. Once infected there is no specific treatment. In 2013 polio affected 416 people down from 350,000 cases in 1988. In 2014 the disease was only spreading between people in Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. In 2015 Nigeria had stopped the spread of wild poliovirus.
Poliomyelitis has existed for thousands of years, with depictions of the disease in ancient art. The disease was first recognized as a distinct condition by Michael Underwood in 1789 and the virus that causes it was first identified in 1908 by Karl Landsteiner. Major outbreaks started to occur in the late 19th century in Europe and the United States. In the 20th century it became one of the most worrying childhood diseases in these areas. The first polio vaccine was developed in the 1950s by Jonas Salk. It is hoped that vaccination efforts and early detection of cases will result in global eradication of the disease by 2018. In 2013; however, there were reports of new cases in Syria and in May 2014, the World Health Organization declared a public health emergency of international concern due to outbreaks of the disease in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The disease does not naturally occur in any other animals

" Why do I see things differently from the way other people see them? Why do I pursue the questions that I pursue, even if others regard them as, as they say, "controversial?" Which merely means that they have a difference of opinion. They see things differently. I am interested both in nature and in the human side of nature, and how the two can be brought together, and effective in a useful way."

Despite the availability of vaccines today, some parents still question whether or not to have their children vaccinated. Author Charlotte Jacobs tells us her thoughts on this matter and speaks to what she believes Salk would say. http://global.oup.com/academic/product/jonas-salk-9780199334414

World history, global history or transnational history is a field of historical study that emerged
as a distinct academic field in the 1980s. It examines history from a global perspective. It is not
to be confused with comparative history, which, like world history, deals with the history of
multiple cultures and nations, but does not do so on a global scale.

Jonas Salk. Jonas Edward Salk (October 28, 1914 – June 23, 1995) was an American medical researcher and virologist.
He discovered and developed the first successful inactivated polio vaccine. He was born in New York City to Jewish parents.
He discovered and developed the first successful inactivated polio vaccine. He was born in New York City to Jewish parents.
An injectable vaccine to prevent re-emergence of polio was launched today ( November 30th 2015) by the government of India and it will be administered in addition to polio drops to double the protection from the deadly virus, which has chances of coming back.
The Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) will be introduced in the routine immunisation programme of the government to do away with the risk of re-introduction of the disease.
Health Minister J.P. Nadda said that though India was certified polio-free on March 27, 2014, the battle against polio is not over yet.
Polio (also known as poliomyelitis) is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system. Children younger than 5 years old are more likely to contract the virus than any other group.
“The virus is still active in our neighboring countries — Pakistan and Afghanistan. Cases of polio still happen there.
So the risk of re-introduction of the disease remains, particularly through importation from these endemic countries,” he said.
“We are there to give them all kinds of support including technical, experience or vaccine-related assistance. But we will have to be vigilant till the virus is eradicated globally,” Mr. Nadda said at a function here to launch the vaccine.
“To ensure that our children are doubly protected from polio, the IPV is being introduced into the routine immunisation programme,” he said
In the first phase, the IPV injection is being introduced in six states — Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab.
However, the children will continue to receive OPV (polio drops) dose under routine immunisation and in pulse polio campaigns till they are 5 years of age.
“Even after receiving the IPV vaccine with the third dose of OPV (polio drops), the children must continue to receive OPV doses under routine immunisation and in pulse polio campaigns till they are five years of age,” Health Secretary B.P. Sharma said.
He said with the elimination of Type 2 polio from the country, the government is shifting from tOPV vaccine to bOPV vaccine in April 2016 and the introduction of new vaccine IPV in the immunisation programme will reduce the risk associated with the shift.
Short notes on polio :
Polio is a viral disease which may affect the spinal cord causing muscle weakness and paralysis. The polio virus enters the body through the mouth, usually from hands contaminated with the stool of an infected person.
Polio is caused by the poliovirus, a highly contagious virus specific to humans. The virus usually enters the environment in the feces of someone who is infected. In areas with poor sanitation, the virus easily spreads through the fecal-oral route, via contaminated water or food.
Polio Vaccines:
There are two types of vaccine that protect against polio: Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) and Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV). IPV, used in the U.S. since 2000, is given as an injection in the leg or arm, depending on age. OPV is taken by mouth. Polio vaccine may be given at the same time as other vaccines.
Most people should get polio vaccine when they are children. Children get 4 doses of IPV at these ages: 2 months, 4 months, 6-18 months, and a booster dose at 4-6 years. OPV has not been used in the United States since 2000 but is still used in many parts of the world.

World history, global history or transnational history is a field of historical study that emerged
as a distinct academic field in the 1980s. It examines history from a global perspective. It is not
to be confused with comparative history, which, like world history, deals with the history of
multiple cultures and nations, but does not do so on a global scale.

After Dr. Peter Salk worked with his father, Dr. Jonas Salk, he understood not only how to help the current situation of the human race, but also where we are going as a race. Dr. Peter Salk delves into the discussion on how his father thought about what the future holds for our species and why it matters to discuss such a topic. The philosophy of life and its structure is something that is not discussed enough, and Dr. Peter Salk brings it to our attention.
Dr. Salk graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard University in 1965 and Alpha Omega Alpha from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1969. He worked in his father’s laboratory at the Salk Institute from 1972-1984 conducting research on the biology and immunotherapy of cancer and autoimmune disease and strategies for vaccine production. He worked again with his father from 1991-1995 on a project to develop an inactivated vaccine for HIV infection, and subsequently worked on the introduction of AIDS treatment programs in Africa and Asia. He is currently President of the Jonas Salk Legacy Foundation, where he is devoting attention to educating the public regarding his father’s life and work and to extend and apply his father’s vision. This aims to help address humanity’s present challenges and opportunities, particularly in the realms of vaccines, global health, and creating a sustainable human future.
