New York Stock Exchange "Tech Glitch" Exposed: The REAL REASON for the July 8, 2015 Shut Down

This CNN news clip has since been removed, and I can't find it anywhere. I don't think this was a real situation, but was rather a test run for wh

Put your money to work. This old but funny video explains basics of how companies go public and sell stock to investors. A basic primer of the capitalist system and how it is making our lives better. When we remember the basic purpose of the stock market, we can better understand why income investments are the best. Good companies use our initial capital to create goods that are in demand. Buying and selling feverishly is inefficient and not effective.

...The purpose of a stock exchange is to facilitate the exchange of securities between buyers and sellers, thus providing a marketplace (virtual or real). The exchanges provide real-time trading information on the listed securities, facilitating price discovery.
The New York Stock Exchange is a physical exchange, also referred to as a listed exchange -- only stocks listed with the exchange may be traded. Orders enter by way of exchange members and flow down to a floor broker, who goes to the floor trading post specialist for that stock to trade the order. The specialist's job is to match buy and sell orders using open outcry. If a spread exists, no trade immediately takes place—in this case the specialist should use his/her own resources (money or stock) to close the difference after his/her judged time. Once a trade has been made the details are reported on the "tape" and sent back to the brokerage firm, which then notifies the investor who placed the order. Although there is a significant amount of human contact in this process, computers play an important role, especially for so-called "program trading".
The NASDAQ is a virtual listed exchange, where all of the trading is done over a computer network. The process is similar to the New York Stock Exchange. However, buyers and sellers are electronically matched. One or more NASDAQ market makers will always provide a bid and ask price at which they will always purchase or sell 'their' stock.
The Paris Bourse, now part of Euronext, is an order-driven, electronic stock exchange. It was automated in the late 1980s. Prior to the 1980s, it consisted of an open outcry exchange. Stockbrokers met on the trading floor or the Palais Brongniart. In 1986, the CATS trading system was introduced, and the order matching process was fully automated.
From time to time, active trading (especially in large blocks of securities) have moved away from the 'active' exchanges. Securities firms, led by UBS AG, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Credit Suisse Group, already steer 12 percent of U.S. security trades away from the exchanges to their internal systems. That share probably will increase to 18 percent by 2010 as more investment banks bypass the NYSE and NASDAQ and pair buyers and sellers of securities themselves, according to data compiled by Boston-based Aite Group LLC, a brokerage-industry consultant.
Now that computers have eliminated the need for trading floors like the Big Board's, the balance of power in equity markets is shifting. By bringing more orders in-house, where clients can move big blocks of stock anonymously, brokers pay the exchanges less in fees and capture a bigger share of the $11 billion a year that institutional investors pay in trading commissions...
In 12th century France the courratiers de change were concerned with managing and regulating the debts of agricultural communities on behalf of the banks. Because these men also traded with debts, they could be called the first brokers. A common misbelief is that in late 13th century Bruges commodity traders gathered inside the house of a man called Van der Beurze, and in 1309 they became the "Brugse Beurse", institutionalizing what had been, until then, an informal meeting, but actually, the family Van der Beurze had a building in Antwerp where those gatherings occurred; the Van der Beurze had Antwerp, as most of the merchants of that period, as their primary place for trading. The idea quickly spread around Flanders and neighboring counties and "Beurzen" soon opened in Ghent and Amsterdam.
In the middle of the 13th century, Venetian bankers began to trade in government securities. In 1351 the Venetian government outlawed spreading rumors intended to lower the price of government funds. Bankers in Pisa, Verona, Genoa and Florence also began trading in government securities during the 14th century. This was only possible because these were independent city states not ruled by a duke but a council of influential citizens. Italian companies were also the first to issue shares. Companies in England and the Low Countries followed in the 16th century. The Dutch East India Company (founded in 1602) was the first joint-stock company to get a fixed capital stock and as a result, continuous trade in company stock emerged on the Amsterdam Exchange. Soon thereafter, a lively trade in various derivatives, among which options and repos, emerged on the Amsterdam market. Dutch traders also pioneered short selling...

On Monday, the PMI manufacturing flash index for November declined 1.4 points to 52.6, however, still above 50 indicating monthly growth. Existing home sales for October were down 3.4% to an annualized rate of 5.36 million.
On Tuesday, news of the downing of a Russian warplane by Turkey sent markets lower, but they rebounded by the end of the day. Third quarter GDP was revised up .6% to 2.1%. Consumer confidence for November dropped sharply to 90.4, losing 8.7 points from the prior month, and below analysts’ expectations.
On Wednesday, durable goods orders for October were up 3%, compared to the prior month’s 1.2% decline. Personal income for October was up .4%, on top of the prior month’s .1% gain, consumer spending was up .1%, the same as the prior month, and the PCE price index for inflation was up .1%. New home sales for October were up 10.7% to 495,000 units annualized. Jobless claims for the week ending November 21stfell 12,000 to 260,000.
On Thursday, markets were closed for Thanksgiving, and Friday was a half-day, with trading ending at 1pm.
Friday morning stocks traded mostly lower as oil prices drifted down and investors evaluated Black Friday shopping results.
Now let’s take a look at some stocks.
Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) announced that it would buy the Botox maker Allergan PLC for $160 billion. Allergan’s headquarters are located in Ireland, and will become the headquarters for the newly merged company. The international merger will also help Pfizer to cut its U.S. tax bill, igniting a new political debate on whether these kind of mergers should be allowed without repercussions.
Palo Alto Networks Inc. (NYSE:PANW) reported quarterly earnings on Monday, surpassing expectations. The Cyber security company reported revenues of $297 million, an increase of 54%. The company has acquired 1,000 new customers, including one of the world's largest software companies. Shares of Palo Alto surged more than 7% on Tuesday.
Dycom Industries, Inc. (NYSE:DY) reported its fiscal first-quarter financials on Monday and results topped Wall Street’s expectations with earnings of $30.8 million. Dycom Industries, a provider of specialty contracting services, saw its shares cross the $86 mark, an increase of more than 300% over 12 months.
GameStop Corp. (NYSE:GME) shares were down about 15% as their quarterly results disappoint due to weak software and hardware sales. Retail stores, together with the company’s online business, recorded a sales drop of 1.1%. The retailer is attempting to stem the decline by starting a collectibles business, with products that carry a higher margin than videogames, and will likely have higher demand. GameStop expects the segment to grow to $500 million a year by the end of 2019.
HP Inc. (NYSE:HPQ) shares tumbled more than 11% Wednesday after earnings revealed that revenue fell short of analysts' expectations. This is the fifth straight quarterly drop of revenue for the tech company, as sales continue disappoint due to lower demand for personal computers. HP’s shares have fallen about 70% since the beginning of the year.

BSE Bombay Stock Exchange, Dalal Street, Bombay. This is where ALL the action takes place in Mumbai!
Even after the city's name was changed to Mumbai, they have gladly not changed it to the MBE. Imagine calling it the Mumbai Stock Exchange. It just doesn't sound right!
As per Wikipedia:
The Bombay Stock Exchange is the oldest exchange in Asia. It traces its history to the 1850s, when four Gujarati and one Parsi stockbroker would gather under banyan trees in front of Mumbai's Town Hall. The location of these meetings changed many times, as the number of brokers constantly increased. The group eventually moved to Dalal Street in 1874 and in 1875 became an official organization known as 'The Native Share & Stock Brokers Association'. In 1956, the BSE became the first stock exchange to be recognized by the Indian Government under the Securities Contracts Regulation Act. The Bombay Stock Exchange developed the BSE SENSEX in 1986, giving the BSE a means to measure overall performance of the exchange. In 2000 the BSE used this index to open its derivatives market, trading SENSEX futures contracts. The development of SENSEX options along with equity derivatives followed in 2001 and 2002, expanding the BSE's trading platform. Historically an open outcry floor trading exchange, the Bombay Stock Exchange switched to an electronic trading system in 1995. It took the exchange only fifty days to make this transition. This automated, screen-based trading platform called BSE On-line trading (BOLT) currently has a capacity of 8 million orders per day. The BSE has also introduced the world's first centralized exchange-based internet trading system, BSEWEBx.co.in to enable investors anywhere in the world to trade on the BSE platform. The BSE is currently housed in Phiroze Jeejeebhoy Towers at Dalal Street, Fort area.

I don't know why I did this, but I felt I needed to record a clip by CNN about the "tech glitch" where a CNN reporter clearly indicates that a list of "problematic stocks" was circulated to traders and stockbrokers on the floor before the market opened. This CNN news clip has since been removed, and I can't find it anywhere. I don't think this was a real situation, but was rather a test run for what is coming in September, specifically on Elul 29.

US Copyright Act of 1976 17 U.S.C. § 107 allows for the use of work that is used for comment, criticism, or education and is non-profit in nature. Please see the provision below...

In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include:
the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

Business News - Financial News - Stock Exchange -- Wall Street -- Market News - New York Stock Exchange 2015
On Monday, there wasn’t much economic news, however, investors had time to further digest last week’s strong jobs report and markets turned downward on concern of the Fed raising interest rates as soon as next month. Exports from China in October fell 6.9% year-over-year, and imports dropped 18.8% year-over-year, and this also helped stoke fears of a global slowdown. Markets were down sharply by the close, with the Dow Industrials off 179 points.
On Tuesday, import prices for October fell .2% for the month and export prices fell .5%. The U.S. dollar traded at its highest level since April against major world currencies.
On Wednesday, more data from China showed retail sales were up 11% year-over-year in October, however, industrial output grew a bit below expectations at 5.6%. Markets ended the day modestly lower.
On Thursday, jobless claims for the week ending November 12th were unchanged at 276,000. The Labor Department’s September JOLTS report showed the number of job openings increased 2.8% to about 5.53 million. Oil dropped sharply as crude oil futures settled at $41.75 a barrel, after government reports showed the U.S.’s stockpile of oil continued to grow. Markets fell sharply, with the Dow Industrials closing down 254 points.
On Friday, the producer price index for October fell .4%, on top of the previous month’s .5% drop. Retail sales for October increased .1% on top of the prior month’s .1% gain. Markets opened sharply lower as oil prices continued to fall. Now let’s take a look at some stocks.
Macy's, Inc. (NYSE:M). reported third quarter earnings before the market opened Wednesday and by the end of the day, shares tumbled almost 14%. The iconic retailer posted adjusted earnings of 56 cents per share, down from 61 cents a year ago. Revenue fell to $5.9 billion from $6.2 billion in 2014. This marks the third-straight quarter of declining sales.
SunEdison Inc. (NYSE:SUNE) shares were down more than 24% Tuesday after the solar energy company reported a loss of 91 cents per share on revenue of $476 million. Analysts had projected a loss of 69 cents per share. Shares of SunEdison are down 82% since hitting this year's high of $33.44 on July 20th.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) new iPad Pro is the company’s largest and most expensive tablet to date. The new device started selling in stores Wednesday. Prices start at $799 and go up to a $1,217 model which includes 128 gigabyte and a pencil and keyboard cover. That’s 18% more than Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 tablets with similar specs.
On Wednesday Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (NYSE:BABA) and JD.Com Inc. broke their sales record results from the prior year during annual Singles Day, China's biggest shopping day. For the entire 24 hour period of November 11th, Alibaba had $14.3 billion worth of sales, an increase of more than 50% from $9.3 billion in 2014. JD.com didn’t disclose specific numbers, but said its revenue was double that of last year.
Advance Auto Parts, Inc. (NYSE:AAP). shares collapsed more than 14% after releasing their third quarter financials. As a result, the company’s current CEO, Darren Jackson, will be stepping down in January. Advance Auto Parts has been under pressure from Starboard Value, an activist investor hedge fund, which is claiming that Advance Auto Parts should reduce its overhead costs and improve product sourcing.

Chinese internet giant Alibaba will pay HK$2.06bn ($266m; £175m) for Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post.
The newspaper group revealed the sale price in a statement filed to the Hong Kong stock exchange. The deal was announced on Friday.
Besides the English-language newspaper, Alibaba will also own sister publications, websites, and magazines.
The acquisition has raised questions due to the close links Alibaba founder Jack Ma has with Beijing.
Alibaba has promised that the paper would have editorial independence, and said it could leverage on its technology expertise to develop the paper.
The newspaper group said it will gain about HK$1.4m from the sale, "a very substantial proportion" of which would be disbursed in a special cash dividend.
The paper was founded in 1903 but profits and sales have been hit in recent years by the same declines as newspapers in many countries.

During the 1980s and 1990s phone and electronic trading replaced physical floor trading in most exchanges around the world.
As of 2007 few exchanges still have floor trading. One example is the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) which still executes a small percentage of its trades on the floor. That means that the traders actually form a group around the post on the floor of the market for the specialist, someone that works for one of the NYSE member firms and handles the stock. Just like in an auction, there are shouts coming from those that want to sell and those that want to buy. The specialist facilitates in the match and centralizing the trades.
On January 24, 2007, the NYSE went from being strictly an auction market to a hybrid market that encompassed both the auction method and an electronic trading method that immediately makes the trade electronically. A small group of extremely high-priced stocks isn't on this trading system and is still auctioned on the trading floor.
Even though over 82 percent of the trades take place electronically, the action on the floor of the stock exchange still has its place. While electronic trading is faster and provides for anonymity, there's more opportunity to improve the price of a share if it goes to the floor. Investors maintain the right to select the method they want to use.

On October 19, 1987, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) dropped 508 points, a 22.6% loss in a single day, the second-biggest one-day drop the exchange had experienced. Black Monday was followed by Terrible Tuesday, a day in which the Exchange's systems did not perform well and some people had difficulty completing their trades.
Subsequently, there was another major drop for the Dow on October 13, 1989; the Mini-Crash of 1989. The crash was apparently caused by a reaction to a news story of a $6.75 billion leveraged buyout deal for UAL Corporation, the parent company of United Airlines, which broke down. When the UAL deal fell through, it helped trigger the collapse of the junk bond market causing the Dow to fall 190.58 points, or 6.91 percent.
Similarly, there was a panic in the financial world during the year of 1997; the Asian Financial Crisis. Like the fall of many foreign markets, the Dow suffered a 7.18% drop in value (554.26 points) on October 27, 1997, in what later became known as the 1997 Mini-Crash but from which the DJIA recovered quickly. This was the first time that the "circuit breaker" rule had operated.
On January 26, 2000, an altercation during filming of the music video for "Sleep Now in the Fire", which was directed by Michael Moore, caused the doors of the exchange to be closed and the band Rage Against the Machine to be escorted from the site by security[15] after band members attempted to gain entry into the exchange.[16] Trading on the exchange floor, however, continued uninterrupted.[17]
In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the NYSE was closed for 4 trading sessions, one of the longest times the NYSE was closed for more than one session; only the third time since March 1933.
On May 6, 2010, the Dow Jones Industrial Average posted its largest intraday percentage drop since the October 19, 1987 crash, with a 998 point loss later being called the 2010 Flash Crash (as the drop occurred in minutes before rebounding). The SEC and CFTC published a report on the event, although it did not come to a conclusion as to the cause. The regulators found no evidence that the fall was caused by erroneous ("fat finger") orders.[18]
On October 29, 2012, the stock exchange was shut down for 2 days due to Hurricane Sandy.[19] The last time the stock exchange was closed due to weather for a full two days was on March 12 and 13 in 1888.[20]
On May 1, 2014 the stock exchange was fined $4.5 million "to settle charges it violated market rules, the Securities and Exchange Commission said Thursday."

The fragile state of today’s world financial markets is not a new phenomenon. It wasn’t long ago that the world braced itself for another Great Depression.
It was the defining moment of the 1980's. The New York Stock Exchange, the epicenter of the world financial markets and backbone of American capitalism, was under siege. On October 19th, 1987, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 508 points, the largest single day drop in the history of the stock market. But it was on Tuesday, October 20th that the world's financial markets came within 5 minutes of total disintegration.
How was it averted? Was it a miracle? Manipulation? Or a lucky trade?
Cancel Crash depicts the dramatic events that saved the world from financial anarchy and presents for the first time what actually happened on Terrible Tuesday. Framed between the opening bell on Friday, October 16h to the closing bell of Terrible Tuesday, the story unfolds as the perilous clock ticks, revealing those who prevented a global Depression and saved our financial markets.

An Overview of the New York Stock Exchange: Building, Trading Floor, History (1998)

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), sometimes known as the "Big Board", is a stock exchange located at 11 Wall Street, Lower Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States. It is by far the world's largest stock exchange by market capitalization of its listed companies at US$16.613 trillion as of May 2013. Average daily trading value was approximately US$169 billion in 2013.
The NYSE trading floor is located at 11 Wall Street and is composed of four rooms used for the facilitation of trading. A fifth trading room, located at 30 Broad Street, was closed in February 2007. The main building, located at 18 Broad Street, between the corners of Wall Street and Exchange Place, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1978, as was the 11 Wall Street building.
The NYSE is operated by NYSE Euronext (NYSE: NYX), which was formed by the NYSE's 2007 merger with the fully electronic stock exchange Euronext. In December 2012, it was announced that the company would be sold to Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), a futures exchange headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, for $8 billion, a figure that is significantly less than the $11 billion bid for the company tendered in 2011.
The origin of the NYSE can be traced to May 17, 1792, when the Buttonwood Agreement was signed by 24 stockbrokers outside of 68 Wall Street in New York under a buttonwood tree on Wall Street.[10] On March 8, 1817, the organization drafted a constitution and renamed itself the "New York Stock & Exchange Board". Anthony Stockholm was elected the Exchange's first president.
The last central location of the Exchange was a room, rented in 1792 for $200 a month, located at 40 Wall Street. After that location was destroyed in the Great Fire of New York in 1835, the Exchange moved to a temporary headquarters. In 1863, the New York Stock & Exchange Board changed to its current name, the New York Stock Exchange. In 1865, the Exchange moved to 10--12 Broad Street.
The New York Stock Exchange was closed for ten days starting September 20, 1873, because of the Panic of 1873.[11]
The volume of stocks traded increased sixfold in the years between 1896 and 1901, and a larger space was required to conduct business in the expanding marketplace.[12] Eight New York City architects were invited to participate in a design competition for a new building; ultimately, the Exchange selected the neoclassic design submitted by architect George B. Post. Demolition of the Exchange building at 10 Broad Street, and adjacent buildings, started on May 10, 1901.
The main façade featuring six tall columns with Corinthian capitals
The new building, located at 18 Broad Street, cost $4 million and opened on April 22, 1903. The trading floor, at 109 × 140 feet (33 × 42.5 m), was one of the largest volumes of space in the city at the time, and had a skylight set into a 72-foot (22 m)-high ceiling. The main façade of the building features six tall columns with Corinthian capitals, topped by a marble pediment containing high-relief sculptures by John Quincy Adams Ward with the collaboration of Paul Wayland Bartlett, carved by the Piccirilli Brothers, representing Integrity Protecting the Works of Man. The building was listed as a National Historic Landmark and added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 2, 1978.[13]
In 1922, a building for offices, designed by Trowbridge & Livingston, was added at 11 Wall Street, as well as a new trading floor called the Garage. Additional trading floor space was added in 1969 the Blue Room, and in 1988 the EBR or Extended Blue Room, with the latest technology for information display and communication. Yet another trading floor was opened at 30 Broad Street called the Bond Room in 2000. As the NYSE introduced its hybrid market, a greater proportion of trading came to be executed electronically, and due to the resulting reduction in demand for trading floor space, the NYSE decided to close the 30 Broad Street trading room in early 2006. As the adoption of electronic trading continued to reduce the number of traders and employees on the floor, in late 2007, the NYSE closed the rooms created by the 1969 and 1988 expansions.

In terms of the number of points lost, Monday August 24th, 2015 was the eighth-worst single-day loss in the index’s history.
A third of S&P; 500 companies have declined over 20% from their peaks and many retain high valuations despite disappointing earnings numbers. The United States Dollar Index dropped the most it has in over 5 months today to seven month lows - losing against the Euro and Yen. Oil prices plunged, with the U.S. oil benchmark settling down 5.5% at $38.24 a barrel, its first close below $40 a barrel since February 2009.

How Gold Prices Affect the Stock Market - Conspiracy by Commercial Banks (2002)

Gold exchange-traded products may include exchange-traded funds (ETFs), exchange-traded notes (ETNs), and closed-end funds (CEFs) which are traded like shares on the major stock exchanges. The first gold ETF, Gold Bullion Securities (ticker symbol "GOLD"), was launched in March 2003 on the Australian Stock Exchange, and originally represented exactly 0.1 troy ounces (3.1 g) of gold. As of November 2010, SPDR Gold Shares is the second-largest exchange-traded fund in the world by market capitalization.
Gold Exchange-traded products (ETPs) represent an easy way to gain exposure to the gold price, without the inconvenience of storing physical bars. However exchange-traded gold instruments, even those which hold physical gold for the benefit of the investor, carry risks beyond those inherent in the precious metal itself. For example the most popular gold ETP (GLD) has been widely criticized, and even compared with mortgage-backed securities, due to features of its complex structure.
Typically a small commission is charged for trading in gold ETPs and a small annual storage fee is charged. The annual expenses of the fund such as storage, insurance, and management fees are charged by selling a small amount of gold represented by each certificate, so the amount of gold in each certificate will gradually decline over time.
Exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, are investment companies that are legally classified as open-end companies or unit investment trusts (UITs), but that differ from traditional open-end companies and UITs. The main differences are that ETFs do not sell directly to investors and they issue their shares in what are called "Creation Units" (large blocks such as blocks of 50,000 shares). Also, the Creation Units may not be purchased with cash but a basket of securities that mirrors the ETF's portfolio. Usually, the Creation Units are split up and re-sold on a secondary market.
ETF shares can be sold in basically two ways. The investors can sell the individual shares to other investors, or they can sell the Creation Units back to the ETF. In addition, ETFs generally redeem Creation Units by giving investors the securities that comprise the portfolio instead of cash. Because of the limited redeemability of ETF shares, ETFs are not considered to be and may not call themselves mutual funds.

Bill Murphy is a former American professional football player, financial commentator, and the chairman and director of the Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee (GATA), which was founded as a result of Murphy's essays on collusion among large financial institutions to suppress the price of precious metals. Murphy believes the price of gold is artificially low and has spent years lobbying the US government to investigate market manipulation in the gold market.
Born William J. Murphy III, he grew up in Glen Ridge, New Jersey and graduated from Cornell University in 1968. While in college, he played American football and went on to become a starting wide receiver for the Boston Patriots. He then went to work at Merrill Lynch as a trainee learning the commodities markets. He later worked at Shearson Hayden Stone and Drexel Burnham, eventually starting his own brokerage firm. From 1993 to 1996, Murphy lived in Miami, Florida, where he was an entrepreneur Murphy is now a financial commentator and operates a financial website for investors of gold.
Murphy began compiling evidence and writing about manipulation of the gold market in the mid-1990s. His claims about a gold cartel and market suppression were initially ridiculed as conspiracy theories and discounted. In 2008, the CFTC released a report in which they acknowledged that since the 1980s, they had received "numerous letters, e-mails and phone calls" alleging that prices in the silver market were being suppressed. Murphy and GATA have gained recognition, but still have difficulty being covered by the mainstream media.
On March 25, 2010, Murphy spoke at a hearing of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on position limits in precious metals markets. Murphy identified Andrew Maguire as the source of information on market manipulation in the silver market. Maguire had contacted Adrian Douglas, a member of GATA's board, after Maguire was not invited to speak at the CFTC hearing.
