The Athens Stock Exchange or ASE or ATHEX (Greek: Χρηματιστήριο Αθηνών or ΧΑΑ) is a stock exchange located in Athens, Greece. There are five markets operating in ATHEX: regulated securities market, regulated derivatives market, Alternative market, carbon market (for EUAs) and OTC market. In the regulated securities market investors can trade in stocks, bonds, ETFs and other related securities.
ATHEX has over 30 indices. The six main indices are: Composite Index (GD), FTSE/Athex Large Cap (FTSE , also known as FTSE 25), FTSE/Athex Mid Cap Index (FTSEM), FTSE/Athex Market Index (FTSEA), FTSE/ATHEX Global Traders Index Plus (FTSEGTI) and FTSE/ATHEX Factor-Weighted Index (FTSEMSFW).
The Athens stock exchange was closed on 27 June 2015 because of the Greek government-debt crisis. It reopened on 3 August 2015 and lost more than 16% in the day's trading with certain bank stocks plummeting 30%, the daily change limit.
A stock exchange or bourse is an exchange where stock brokers and traders can buy and/or sell stocks (also called shares), bonds, and other securities. Stock exchanges may also provide facilities for issue and redemption of securities and other financial instruments, and capital events including the payment of income and dividends. Securities traded on a stock exchange include stock issued by listed companies, unit trusts, derivatives, pooled investment products and bonds. Stock exchanges often function as "continuous auction" markets, with buyers and sellers consummating transactions at a central location, such as the floor of the exchange.
To be able to trade a security on a certain stock exchange, it must be listed there. Usually, there is a central location at least for record keeping, but trade is increasingly less linked to such a physical place, as modern markets use electronic networks, which gives them advantages of increased speed and reduced cost of transactions. Trade on an exchange is restricted to brokers who are members of the exchange. In recent years, various other trading venues, such as electronic communication networks, alternative trading systems and "dark pools" have taken much of the trading activity away from traditional stock exchanges.
Athens (/ˈæθᵻnz/;Modern Greek: Αθήνα, Athína [[aˈθina]], Ancient Greek: Ἀθῆναι Athēnai), is the capital and largest city of Greece. Athens dominates the Attica region and is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning around 3,400 years, and the earliest human presence around the 11th–7th centuries BC.Classical Athens was a powerful city-state that emerged in conjunction with the seagoing development of the port of Piraeus. A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum, it is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy, largely because of its cultural and political impact on the European continent and in particular the Romans. In modern times, Athens is a large cosmopolitan metropolis and central to economic, financial, industrial, maritime, political and cultural life in Greece. In 2015, Athens was ranked the world's 29th richest city by purchasing power and the 67th most expensive in a UBS study.
August 3 -- After five weeks in a deep sleep, equities in Greece became free to trade again. Closed since June 29, the Athens Stock Exchange reopened Monday, with the benchmark ASE Index slumping a record 22 percent at 11 a.m. in Athens. A host of restrictions will govern the purchase of shares by local traders due to capital controls imposed as the country acted to preserve its financial system. --Subscribe to Bloomberg on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/Bloomberg Bloomberg Television offers extensive coverage and analysis of international business news and stories of global importance. ATHENS, Greece - A van bomb exploded outside the Athens Stock Exchange Wednesday, lightly injuring a passer-by and causing extensive damage to the building and to nearby cars, Greek police said. A second bomb outside a government building in the northern city of Thessaloniki caused only minor damage. Both attacks were preceded by anonymous warning calls to Greek media, but there was no claim of responsibility. Police said a Greek far-left militant group called Revolutionary Struggle, best known for firing a rocket at the U.S. embassy in Athens in 2007, was suspected in the stock exchange blast. "The methodology points to Revolutionary Struggle," police spokesman Panayiotis Stathis said. Extensive damage The attack in Athens' central Votanikos district blew out windows at the s...
The Athens stock market shut down a month ago and it was scheduled to re-open this week. But, it remains closed because of technical issues. Instead, it will open on Monday, August 3rd. The delay comes as the International Monetary Fund announces it will only approve new loans for Greece, after it reaches an agreement with its European creditors. CCTV's Eirini Zarkadoula filled this report from Athens.

The Athens Stock Exchange reopened for the first time in 5 weeks Monday. There were lots of restrictions on selling. It immediately sold off 20% with the banks being hit the hardest. Some banks fell the limit of 30% and had to be halted. Bank stocks are particularly vulnerable as Greek lenders are set for new recapitalization in the coming months. Diamond Offshore (DO), one of the top five offshore rig contractors, reported an 8.4% fall in quarterly revenue, hurt by lower demand due to weak oil prices. The company's total revenue fell to $634 million in the second quarter ended June 30 from $692 million a year ago. JCPenney's (JCP) new CEO took over the company during the weekend. Marvin Ellison will be in charge of continuing its upswing after disasterous sales a few years back. He will a...

Greece's stock exchange has plunged by nearly 23 percent after opening for the first time in five weeks. It is the market's biggest fall on record. Immediate heavy losses were expected amid ongoing uncertainly over Greece's economy. Trading on the Athens bourse had been suspended since late June, amid capital controls when it looked like debt-ridden Greece could be dumped from the euro zone. Since then, the country has agreed a framework bailout plan with international creditors in exchange … READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2015/08/03/newly-opened-athens-stock-market-plunges-after-five-week-shutdown What are the top stories today? Take a tour of some of the most historic buildings of America. Historic Philadelphia is where the Founding Fathers laid the groundwork for the creation of America. Not only is the city packed with sites that commemorate what they did, but you can visit the places where they actually lived and worked. Let's start with Declaration House on Seventh and Market Street. Thomas Jefferson lived here during the time he wrote the Declaration of Independence. He wrote the document in three weeks. The Liberty Bell, right here on Sixth Street, is perhaps Philadelphia's most famous attraction. On July 8th, 1776, it was rung to commemorate the hearing of the Declaration of Independence. The Bell weighs 2,000 pounds, which may not be apparent by looking at it. It was cracked in 1846, and has not be...
