Borehole images are widely used in the oil and gas industry in several applications, including structural analysis and geosteering, sedimentary and reservoir geometry analysis, and textural analysis. It is also used as a tool to study in-situ stress around the borehole for geomechanics analysis. Borehole Imaging can dramatically expand the information obtained from conventional logs. It also has several advantages over cores, particularly its relatively low cost, its high vertical resolution (up to 5 mm), and the fact that image logs can be easily run in long sections of the borehole, in and out of the reservoir. There is one fundamental challenge in this technique, however: processing time! A drilling rig in standby waiting for the formation dip to be obtained from an image log, in order to pick a kick-off point, is a rig that is wasting several thousand dollars per hour. If a more detailed structural or stratigraphic analysis is required, a log analyst may spend somewhere between eight hours to a couple of days producing a result. If textural information from the images needs to be used for a facies analysis, then a commitment of several days could be required!
