China: Shenyang residents don masks as air pollution reaches record levels
Pedestrians walked through Shenyang with their faces covered with masks, as the air pollution has reached up to 50 times above the levels recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Monday. At a certain point, a thick grey smoke was visible hanging around the city, reducing the visibility.

September 20, 2014
We were so excited to visit northeast China for the first time! We flew into Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning Province, from Shanghai on a direct Spring Air flight. Instead of taking a taxi into the city, we opted to try public transportation. The urban tram to BaiTaHeLu Station cost just 2 RMB per person, but it was extremely slow. From there we had to walk about five minutes to the subway station of the same name. Shenyang has just two subway lines, so it's very easy system to navigate. We had to transfer once before arriving at our final destination, Shenyang Station. It took almost 1 hour and 30 minutes to get from the airport to Shenyang Station. Because the cost of living is relatively low, taxi meters start at just 8 RMB and public transport is slow, we would opt for a taxi the next time around.
We spent the day exploring downtown Shenyang on foot. We were fascinated by ZhongShan Square the home of an enormous Chairman Mao statue. We especially loved seeing the statue at night when so many different groups gathered in the square for aerobics, dancing, break dancing, badminton, and biking.
Another point of interest is TaiYuan, the underground shopping streets that run between ZhongShan Square and Shenyang Station. It's recently undergone major renovations that weren't completely done by the time we visited. But we think it'll be an awesome food and shopping destination once it's 100% finished. For anyone looking to get a manicure or pedicure, Glo recommends TaiYuan where she got a gel manicure for just 30 RMB!
For dinner we had Korean BBQ in XiTa, which is a Koreatown filled with Korean restaurants and shops. Given Shenyang's proximity to North Korea, the city and province as a whole have a reputation for excellent Korean food. We were not disappointed! This was definitely the best Korean food we've so far had in China! And it cost just 120 RMB for the entire dinner!
Lastly, we stayed at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Zhongshan location. The room was comfortable, and the staff were helpful and spoke a bit of English. It's within walking distance of Shenyang Station, but it's a long walk (about 20 minutes).
Thank you for watching!
See you four days for our next upload!

Trams in the northern Chinese city of Shenyang. Most of the 4 line network is wired, but trams operate through short unwired sections (mostly junctions, termini and intersections) using under-floor capacitors.
First is a line 5 tram departing from the Aiotizhongxin terminus.
Second (1:18) is a line 2 tram arriving from the end of the line and proceeding into the stop at the Aiotizhongxin terminus. Although it shares the same name as the line 5 terminus, the line 1 & 2 Aotizhongxing stop is 2 blocks away from the line 5 stop.
Third (2:54) is a line 1 tram arriving from the end of the line and proceeding into the stop at the Aiotizhongxin terminus
Fourth (4:23) is a line 1 tram running from Aoitizhongxing to Expo Center at Northeastern University. This is the junction with line 3, which at the time was not yet in service.

Chinese state media and netizens have decried high pollution levels in the northeast city of Shenyang, which activists have said could be the "worst ever" air quality seen in the country.
On Sunday pollution readings were about 50 times higher than that considered safe by the World Health Organization.
State media have blamed the local government for the thick smog.
Pollution is a perennial problem in China's northeast, home to heavy industries including coal mining.
In some parts of Shenyang, Sunday's readings of tiny particulate which can get into the lungs, known as PM 2.5, exceeded 1,400 mg per cubic metre, according to state media People's Daily.
The WHO recommends a maximum 24-hour average of 25 mg per cubic metre.
"As far as we are aware from the data we have been observing over the past few years, this is the highest ever PM 2.5 level recording" in the country, Dong Liansai a campaigner with environmental group Greenpeace, told AFP news agency.
There has been no government confirmation of this assertion.

Our first trip of 2015 was to northeastern China! We returned to Shenyang, and the city was completely transformed from our first visit in fall 2014. Shanghai's winters are very mild, so this trip gave us an opportunity to truly experience winter in China. If you happen to be in Shenyang during the colder months of the year, definitely visit Beiling Park which turns into a winter wonderland! We had SO much fun snow tubing there! Each tube cost just 50 RMB for a one-hour rental; we also had to pay a 100 RMB security deposit for each snow tube. There are tons of other activities to choose from...fun for all ages! All the winter activities take place on the frozen lakes. It's beautiful!
Zhaoling Tomb is located inside Beiling Park. You have to pay a separate admissions fee to enter. We didn't mind paying the low season entrance fee of 30 RMB, but the price doubles in the high season to 60 RMB per person.
On a separate day Tim explored the Shenyang Aviation Museum. His favorite part was re-enacting scenes from Top Gun while sitting in the cockpit of a real MIG! Lol.
As always, happy travels!! And thank you for watching!!

Smog creates serious problems in China. Residents of the northern city of Shenyang million have breathing problems and stinging eyes.
The air quality in northeast China is so bad that the authorities advise people to stay indoors. People who want to go outside, such as Shenyang, still only come out of their homes with gas masks and face masks on.
Since China began three years ago with the release of data on air quality, there are not such bad values measured as now.

London is the capital city of both England and the United Kingdom. ] Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia, its history going back to its founding by the Romans, who named it Londinium. London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 1.12-square-mile (2.9 km2) medieval boundaries and in 2011 had a resident population of 7,375, making it the smallest city in England. Since at least the 19th century, the term London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core. The bulk of this conurbation forms the Greater London administrative area (coterminous with the London region), governed by the Mayor of London and the London Assembly.

A Chinese tour guide who was caught on camera berating tourists for not shopping enough has had her license revoked after the video went viral.
The woman had threatened to cancel the group's next trip and not pay for their return tickets if they did not spend up to 3,000 yuan (£319; $483) each.
Officials in south-western Yunnan say she violated national tourism laws.
Since 2013, Chinese tour operators have been banned from enforcing shopping stops and seeking illegitimate profit.
In the four minute video (in Chinese), the female tour guide pleads with a bus load of tourists, asking them: "Where are your sense of conscience and morals?"
"If all of you don't spend more than 3,000 or 4,000 [yuan], we'll cancel the Xishuangbanna trip, the tour company won't be responsible for the return to Shenyang," she warns.
The video, which has been widely circulated on Chinese-language social networking sites, has sparked outrage with many users sharing their own bad experiences of tour operators in China.
In addition to revoking the tour guide's license, Yunnan tourism officials said on Sunday the guide's travel agency had also been suspended from operating.
The company, Kunming Fenghua Travel Agency, was fined 20,000 yuan, a statement from the Yunnan Provincial Commission on Tourism Development said.
"First thing, the tour guide forced them to shop, if the video is real, then her words certainly violated the regulation. Secondly, her attitude is terrible. Third, she used abusive language. So based on these aspects, we can say she violated regulations," official Liu Kunfeng is quoted by Chinese radio station CRIEnglish as saying.
Several users on China's main microblogging service Weibo recalled similar incidents, some in the same province.
"More than just forcing you to shop, my tour guide made us pay fees and changed the itinerary without our consent. We called to file complaints but they cover up for each other. I'd say let's not go to Yunnan anymore. This is not an isolated incident, it's everywhere," one user posts.
Another user describes an encounter with a guide on a tour of some north-eastern provinces during the Spring Festival, China's most important annual holiday.
"The female tour guide was such a bandit. I almost got into a brawl with her. And that was a place with no mobile signal, where everybody were forced to spend money. They threatened us, but there was no phone signal, and we couldn't call the police."
