Renault is looking to stay competitive by gradually shedding jobs and keeping wage increases moderate at its Romanian Dacia plant. Renault acquired Dacia - once a ubiquitous car under Romanian Communism - in 1999. The no-frills brand has since developed into a top seller for the French company as well as being one of the eastern European country's main growth drivers.

Judge Alex Kozinski: From Communist Romania to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals
"Those of you who've had the good fortune to be born in the United States simply have not known the absence of freedoms," says Judge Alex Kozinski, Chief Judge of the U.S Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. "You can only imagine, but not experience, what it's like to live in a society where these freedoms are absent."
Born in 1950 to Holocaust survivors, Kozinski grew up as a committed communist in Bucharest, Romania. On his first trip outside of the Iron Curtain, in Vienna, Austria, he experienced forbidden luxuries like bubble gum and bananas. It was his first taste of freedom, and it caused him to become, in his words, "an instant cap

It was his first taste of freedom, and it caused him to become, in his words, "an instant capitalist."
Today, Kozinski is responsible for some of the most influential - and controversial - legal decisions in the United States. Kozinski's rulings have challenged the Obama administration over the issue of same-sex marriage. In a case that tested the limits of parody and artistic expression, he has weighed in on whether a Barbie doll qualifies as a sex object. In one of the most influential dissents in recent memory, he caused federal prosecutors to drop all charges against a defendant who'd been convicted of smuggling of illegal immigrants across the U.S.-Mexican border.
Kozinski sat down with Reason editor-in-chief Matt Welch during Reason Weekend in Las Vegas for a wide-ranging discussion about freedom and the law. How do mobile phones and cloud computing affect our right to privacy? Why do judges interpret the commerce clause of the U.S. Constitution so broadly? What's wrong with the practice of jury nullification?
Kozinski, a self-described libertarian, answers these questions, and many others, with the insight and wry humor that comes from decades of experience on the bench - and a childhood under communism.
About 50 minutes.
Produced by Todd Krainin. Camera by Meredith Bragg and Alex Manning.

Take a tour of Town of Sibiu in Sibiu, Romania -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Sibiu, situated in the heart of Romania, is a large city with a historic foundation.
It is divided into two main sections: the older Lower Town and the Upper Town. The old town dates back to the twelfth century and still has buildings from that time.
Sibiu was once a fortified city and some of its walls and towers still stand.
The Upper Town is newer and features the Grand Square, named for obvious reasons.
The city has a great collection of museums and medieval buildings, and is quite beautiful.

The first time I went to Romania I was really afraid, I though about it as a dangerous and not worth visiting place. I couldn't be more wrong.
Romania is awesome, its landscapes and history are astounding, there's plenty of stuff that goes beyond vampires and Dracula, Transylvania is amazing and you should definitely visit it!

From the city of Bucharest, to Saxon villages and cities of Transylvania, Romania should be on your radar now, if it wasn't already!

Transylvania boasts in various extremely beautiful landscapes. Its mountaintops are crowned by castle ruins, in its steep creeks rivers are twisting. In the giant wooden lands caves can be found, while among the alpine snow-capped mountains tarns are awaiting the tourists. Unique sights are the Békás Canyon and the Killer's Lake, which guards the petrified pinewoods. The warm springs feed such spa-resorts as Tusnádfürdő or Szováta. The medieval towns surrounded by towers and walls tell us tales of the past. National costumes, carved Székely-gates and the works of the Korond potters represent the ancient art of the folks living here. A legend

Sighisoara, Romania: As We Travel Europe - Country #20
A legend or a story belongs to almost every city, every castle, no matter if it is the tall Déva castle, Hunyadvár or Brán, the Castle of Count Dracula.

TRAVEL GUIDE ROMANIA (Transalpina 2 by Felicia Popescu)
Travel video about destination The Danube Delta in Romania.
Covering an area of around half a million hectares the Danube Delta is the second largest river delta in Europe, the largest being in Romania. Following the collapse of the communist regime the area has become an increasingly popular tourist destination. With its unique network of interconnected eco-systems the Delta is one of the most important sanctuaries for more than three hundred species of bird as it contains an abundance of food as well as providing a good nesting area in a totally natural environment. The region’s most important fish are sturgeon, carp and catfish and though the fishing methods are somewhat dated the annual catch is highly impressive. The future of this fresh-water reserve located on the eastern edge of Europe appears to be assured as much has been done to protect it for generations to come.

Museum opens at site of former Communist leader's trial and execution
More than 20 years after Romania's Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife were convicted of genocide and executed, the country has opened a museum about the last two days of the couple's lives during the country's pro-democracy uprising.
The museum is located in Targoviste, 80 kilometres (50 miles) northwest of Bucharest, in the military building where the trial and executions took place.
Museum visitors will be able to see metal plates that he and his wife ate on, the beds where they slept and a tiny improvised courtroom where they faced a hastily conducted trial before a special military tribunal.

Romania charges commander of a Communist labour camp with genocide
The Romanian prosecutor's office has charged a former commander of a Communist labour camp with genocide for allegedly being responsible for 103 deaths.
Ion Ficior, 85, was deputy commander, then commander of the Periprava labour camp from 1958 to 1963.
The camp in the remote Danube Delta village near the Black Sea held up to 2,000 prisoners.
Ficior declined to speak to reporters after he was charged on Thursday.
He told The Associated Press in an interview in June that only three or four died under his command.
The institute investigating crimes committed in the communist era asked for genocide charges to be brought.

It's ten years since Romania's leader Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife Elena were executed by rebels to end the Communist era in Romania and put the country on a path towards democracy.
In the capital Bucharest on Tuesday, celebrations were held to mark the tenth anniversary of the revolution.
But few Romanians turned out, with many in the country still apparently looking for answers as to who was responsible for the killings during the 1989 uprising.
Ten years ago, forces loyal to the Romanian government began surrendering as national television showed the bloody bodies of executed leader Nicolae Ceausescu and his wi

Authorities in Romania are facing an uphill battle trying to stop poor families "dumping" their unwanted children into orphanages.
Widespread poverty and a reluctance to use contraception has left the former Communist state awash with unwanted children.
New laws have tightened up adoption procedures but Romania is still a magnet for childless couples from around the world.
Five years after the collapse of its Communist regime, Romania remains one of the most backward countries in Europe.
The post-Communist government has taken only timid steps to change to a market economy and poverty is widespread.

National Anthem of Romania
"Deșteaptă-te, române!" Romanian pronunciation: [deʃˈte̯aptəte roˈmɨne] ( listen) (variously translated as "Awaken thee, Romanian!", "Awaken, Romanian!", or "Wake up, Romanian!") is the national anthem of Romania.
The lyrics were composed by Andrei Mureșanu (1816–1863) and the music was popular (it was chosen for the poem by Gheorghe Ucenescu (ro), as most sources say).[1] It was written and published during the 1848 revolution, initially with the name "Un răsunet" ("An echo"). It was first sung in late June in the same year in the city of Brașov, on the streets of Șchei quarter.[2] It was immediately accepted as the revolutionary anthem and

A communist-era favourite has drawn together motoring enthusiasts in Romania.
They're showing off their Trabant models, which had the dubious honour of being cheap and anything but luxurious.
57 years since production began in East Germany, these updated classics are still going strong.
STORYLINE:
This small farming town in Transylvania seems an unlikely hot spot for car enthusiasts.
Covasna is 250 kilometres north of the Romanian capital Bucharest, and it's where Trabant enthusiasts have gathered for an annual celebration of the cult vehicle.
Some Trabant models look a little different today than they did in communist times. This 6 meter stretch version isn't something you would have seen behind the iron curtain.

STORYLINE
A Romanian committee investigating crimes committed in the name of communism has asked the general prosecutor to bring charges of aggravated murder against a prison commander for the deaths of six political prisoners.
From 1956 to 1963, Lieutenant Colonel Alexandru Visinescu, now 87, ran the notorious Ramnicu Sarat prison where Romania's pre-communist political leaders were incarcerated.
Andrei Muraru, head of the institute investigating communist crimes, said prisoners died from beatings, hunger, a lack of medical treatment and exposure to cold.
It plans to hand a total of 35 files to prosecutors.
"The actions of Alexandru Visinescu (...) can be considered as crimes of aggravated murder with cruelty against many individuals," Muraru told reporters at a news conference on Tuesday.
"We have strong evidence that suggest this commander imposed an extermination regime of the political prisoners that were carrying out their sentences at Ramnicu Sarat," he added.
Visinescu, speaking to journalists near his Bucharest home Tuesday, rejected the claims and said he was only doing his
job.
"I fulfilled a function," he said as he cursed and took a swipe at a cameraman.
Romania had 617,000 political prisoners.
One-fifth of them died.

The place where they were fatally shot on Christmas Day, 1989, also is showcased.
The former commander of the garrison located in the building took journalists on a tour of the museum on Tuesday.
General Andrei Kemenci said Ceausescu was dissatisfied that he was only given black bread and sweets to eat there and added the leader asked for a change of clothes and to borrow money to spend at a military canteen.
The Romanian revolution was sparked on 16 December 1989 when authorities tried to forcibly move an ethnic Hungarian pastor, Laszlo Toekes, from his home in Timisoara to a remote rural parish.
Residents of the city flocked to his defence, leading to rapidly escalating confrontations with police.
The next day, police, army and secret service units began firing at protesters, the start of six days of fighting that subsequently spilled over to Bucharest and led to the toppling of Ceausescu and the communist government.
Some 11-hundred people were killed during the revolt that ended his rule.
On 22 December, after ruling Romania with an iron fist for nearly 25 years, Ceausescu and his wife fled Bucharest in a helicopter after they were booed by a crowd and hours after their defence minister apparently committed suicide.
Abandoned by the helicopter pilot and most of the leader's aides, the couple then hitchhiked and ended up in Targoviste, where they were arrested by police.
On 24 December, provisional leaders who took over after the Ceausescus fled decided the couple would stand trial the next day.
The trial lasted just two hours during which the defendants said they did not recognise the legitimacy of the court and called former aides attending the trial "traitors".
Both were convicted and immediately executed in the building's courtyard.
The museum will open to the public later this month, with tickets costing seven lei (2.10 US dollars).

It says prisoners died from malnutrition, beatings, lack of medicine, and from dysentery caused by drinking dirty water from the Danube.
"Both former prison commanders, Visinescu and Ficior, are in their eighties and they can no longer be incarcerated," conceded Andrei Muraru, the head of the The Institute for Investigating Crimes of Communism.
Romanian prosecutors charged another former prison commander, 87-year-old Alexandru Visinescu, with genocide for his leadership of the Ramnicu Sarat prison where Romania's elite were incarcerated.
"We want to show the difference between the totalitarian system these men served and the democratic system that will punish them for it. Regardless of the system they served, murder is murder," he said.

Cleaning liverwurst in Ceausescu's time - Communism from a teenage girl's perspective
As promised, the series with stories form communism continues. This time, I'll translate a story taking place in mid 1980s communist Romania. Mid 1980s was the period in which severe rationalization of even the most basic goods had commenced (pretty much like modern Venezuela).

Ten years ago, forces loyal to the Romanian government began surrendering as national television showed the bloody bodies of executed leader Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife Elena.
Ceausescu had ruled Romania with an iron fist, and as Communism began to fall in other Eastern Bloc countries, a wave of reform swelled amongst the Romanian people.
But the uprising was anything but peaceful.
As tens of thousands took to the streets to demand change, a bloody confrontation ensued.
More than a thousand Romanians were killed when troops opened fire on them.
In Romania on Tuesday, ceremonies were held to mark ten years since the bloody revolution which overthrew the Communist government.
But surprisingly few people attended the ceremonies, held in Heroes' Cemetery and University Square.
In Heroes' Cemetery, Romania's patriarch led a religious ceremony attended by the former president and key figure in the revolution, Iliescu Ionesco.
In the wake of the revolution, Ionesco promised the people that his right-wing party would find out who was responsible for ordering and carrying out the killings.
But despite inquests by two separate governments, many people say they're still in the dark.
SOUNDBITE: (Romanian)
"Ten years ago, when I was fighting on the barricades on University Square, I thought the army shot me and now I am paralysed, but I do not really know the truth about who shot me."
SUPER CAPTION: Victim of shootings
At University Square, the former King Michael of Romania attended another religious ceremony at the site where hundreds of young people were killed.
King Michael, the only surviving leader of the Second World War, returned to Romania in 1990 after living in exile for 43 years.
But his visit lasted only 12 hours before he was deported.
King Michael said he was disappointed that the Romanian people hadn't been given more answers.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I've met a lot of young people here and I'm sorry to say that they did not find out the truth about what happened in 1989, and this is very upsetting because these young people are the future of Romania."
SUPER CAPTION: King Michael of Romania
But for many Romanians, the reason for not attending the commemoration services had more to do with economics than apathy.
Like many former Communist countries, people in Romania are considered to be less well-off since the 1989 revolution, and time off from work to attend such commemorations means less pay.
While the anniversary of the uprising has had a lower profile than might have been expected, Romanians are determined to eventually get the answers to the issues which have haunted them for the past ten years.

ROMANIA: POVERTY FORCES PARENTS TO LEAVE CHILDREN IN ORPHANAGES
Romanian/Nat
Authorities in Romania are facing an uphill battle trying to stop poor families "dumping" their unwanted children into orphanages.
Widespread poverty and a reluctance to use contraception has left the former Communist state awash with unwanted children.
New laws have tightened up adoption procedures but Romania is still a magnet for childless couples from around the world.
Five years after the collapse of its Communist regime, Romania remains one of the most backward countries in Europe.
The post-Communist government has taken only timid steps to change to a market economy and poverty is widespread.
The streets are filled with children begging or selling trinkets to help keep their families above the bread line.
Unable to provide for their offspring, many parents opt to leave at least one of their children at an orphanage.
Regional authorities are doing all they can to discourage this, but without as yet much success.
SOUNDBITE: (Romanian)
We have the means to help the families who are in need, so they don't have to give their children to the orphanage, we can help them by economical assistance, we give them food, get them jobs and pay for the kindergarten and school.
SUPER CAPTION: Marinca Pop, Secretary of Cluj county council
During his long rule, former Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu banned birth control to force population growth.
Contraception is now freely available in Romania but is only slowly catching on.
Gypsy families like these continue to have many children.
Fourteen people, 10 of them children, live in two rooms in the basement of this building.
One of the children was recently sent to an orphanage.
SOUNDBITE: (Hungarian)
(Why did your sister's child go to the orphanage?)
My sister's child was sent there because her husband is in jail and this was the smallest child, the little girl, and she put her there because there she has four other children to support.
SUPER CAPTION: Gipsy mother
After the fall of the Communist regime in 1989 the world was shocked by the degrading conditions in Romania's orphanages.
Since then conditions have improved, thanks partially to funding from abroad.
But the number of orphans continues to grow.
There are now around 100-thousand children living in institutions, most of them abandoned by their parents.
Berte Simonsen from Norway is one of thousands of foreign women who have come to Romania looking for a child to adopt.
SOUNDBITE:
We wanted a child. We came to Romania to meet the family and...that was the reason.
SUPER CAPTION: Berte Simonsen, Norwegian woman adopting child
The director of this orphanage in Transylvania says more and more foreign couples are adopting Romanian children, despite new laws tightening up adoption procedures.
SOUNDBITE: (Hungarian)
We try to get the children who are here to families. Most of the children who leave the orphanage are placed with families. There are few adoptions within the country. Most of the adoptions are abroad.
SUPER CAPTION: Dr Olga Szekely Szentmiklosy, director of Cehu-Silvanie orphanage in Transylvania
Romania's orphanages are no longer as hellish as they were during the dictatorship.
But with a legacy of poverty and broken families inherited from the Ceausescu era, the heartbreak of abandoned children is likely to continue.

Driving through a typical communist era neighbourhood: Lunca Bârzavei (Reşiţa City, Romania).
It was first sung in late June in the same year in the city of Brașov, on the streets of Șchei quarter.[2] It was immediately accepted as the revolutionary anthem and renamed "Deșteaptă-te, române".
Since then, this song, which contains a message of liberty and patriotism, has been sung during all major Romanian conflicts, including during the 1989 anti-Ceaușist revolution. After that revolution, it became the national anthem, replacing the communist-era national anthem "Trei culori" ("Three colors").
July 29 is now "National Anthem Day" (Ziua Imnului național), an annual observance in Romania.[3]
The song was also used on various solemn occasions in the Moldavian Democratic Republic, during its brief existence, between 1917 and 1918.[4] Between 1991 and 1994 it was the national anthem of Moldova as well, but was subsequently replaced by the current Moldovan anthem, "Limba noastră" ("Our language").

A lifelong collaborator of Leon Trotsky, he was a prominent activist of the Second International, involved in politics with the Bulgarian Social Democratic Union, Romanian Social Democratic Party, and the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. Rakovsky was expelled at different times from various countries as a result of his activities, and, during World War I, became a founding member of the Revolutionary Balkan Social Democratic Labor Federation while helping to organize the Zimmerwald Conference. Imprisoned by Romanian authorities, he made his way to Russia, where he joined the Bolshevik Party after the October Revolution, and, as head of the Rumcherod, unsuccessfully attempted to generate a communist revolution in the Kingdom of Romania. Subsequently, he was a founding member of the Comintern, served as head of government in the Ukrainian SSR, and took part in negotiations at the Genoa Conference.
He came to oppose Joseph Stalin and rallied with the Left Opposition, being marginalized inside the government and sent as Soviet ambassador to London and Paris, where he was involved in renegotiating financial settlements. He was ultimately recalled from France in autumn 1927, after signing his name to a controversial Trotskyist platform which endorsed world revolution. Credited with having developed the Trotskyist critique of Stalinism as "bureaucratic centrism", Rakovsky was subject to internal exile. Submitting to Stalin's leadership in 1934 and being briefly reinstated, he was nonetheless implicated in the Trial of the Twenty One (part of the Moscow Trials), imprisoned, and executed by the NKVD during World War II. He was rehabilitated in 1988, during the Soviet Glasnost period.

This film is a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) documentary on the history of communism. Included in the film are background details related to the historic rise of communism, the Communist Manifesto, former Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, and activity in the Asian nations of China and North and South Korea.
About the communism:
In the schema of historical materialism, communism is the idea of a free society with no division or alienation, where the people are free from oppression and scarcity. A communist society would have no governments, countries, or class divisions. In Marxist theory, the dictatorship of the proletariat is the intermediate system between capitalism and communism, when the government is in the process of changing the means of ownership from privatism to collective ownership. In political science, the term "communism" is sometimes used to refer to communist states, a form of government in which the state operates under a one-party system and declares allegiance to Marxism-Leninism or a derivative thereof.
A significant sector of the modern communist movement alleges that these states never made an attempt to transition to a communist society, while others even argue that they never achieved a legitimate socialism. Most of these governments claimed to base their ideology on Marxism-Leninism, but they did not call the system they had set up "communism", nor did they even necessarily claim at all times that the ideology was the sole driving force behind their policies: Mao Zedong, for example, pursued New Democracy, and Vladimir Lenin in the early 1920s enacted war communism; later, the Vietnamese enacted doi moi, and the Chinese switched to socialism with Chinese characteristics. The"communist" governments generally claimed that they had set up a transitional socialist system. This system is sometimes referred to as state socialism or by other similar names.
"Pure communism" is a term sometimes used to refer to the stage in history after socialism. The classless, stateless society that is meant to characterise this communism is one where decisions on what to produce and what policies to pursue are made in the best interests of the whole of society - a sort of 'of, by, and for the working class', rather than a rich class controlling the wealth and everyone else working for them on a wage basis. Karl Marx deliberately never provided a detailed description as to how communism would function as a social system, nor the precise ways in which the working class could or should rise up, nor any other material specifics of exactly how to get to communism from capitalism. In the Communist Manifesto, Marx does lay out a 10-point plan advising the redistribution of land and production to begin the transition to communism, but he ensured that even this was very general. It has always been presumed that later theorists in specific situations could adapt communism to their own localities and conditions.
Its leading role in the Second World War saw the emergence of the Soviet Union as a superpower, with strong influence over Eastern Europe and parts of Asia.
Governments modelled on Soviet Communism took power with Soviet assistance in Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Poland, Hungary and Romania. A Communist government was also created under Marshal Tito in Yugoslavia, but Tito's independent policies led to the expulsion of Yugoslavia from the Cominform, which had replaced the Comintern. Titoism, a new branch in the world Communist movement, was labelled "deviationist".
By 1950, the Chinese Communists held all of Mainland China, thus controlling the most populous nation in the world. Other areas where rising Communist strength provoked dissension and in some cases led to actual fighting through conventional and guerrilla warfare include the Korean War, Laos, many nations of the Middle East and Africa, and notably succeeded in the case of theVietnam War.
Communism was seen as a rival, and a threat to western democracies and capitalism. This rivalry peaked during the Cold War, as the world's two remaining superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, polarized most of the world into two camps of nations. This was characterized in the West as The Free World vs. Behind the Iron Curtain. It supported the spread of their respective economic and political systems (capitalism and communism) and strengthened their military powers. As a result, the camps developed new weapon systems, stockpiled nuclear weapons, and competed in space exploration. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communism

Our month long trek across Romania was unforgettable. Starting in Bucharest we visited Brasov, Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, and Timisoara. The history, both recent and far reaching are the stuff of legends! From the city of Bucharest, to Saxon villages and cities of Transylvania, Romania should be on your radar now, if it wasn't already!

The diaries of the former senior political representative of the United States to Romania from 1944 to 1947, Burton Y. Berry, provide a first-hand account of the communist takeover of Romania, as seen through the eyes of an American diplomat. Born on 31 August 1901 in Fowler, Indiana, Burton Y. Berry completed his studies at Indiana University before joining the United States Foreign Service. From 1928 to 1944 he served in various posts at American diplomatic missions in Turkey, Greece, Iran, and Egypt. In 1944 he was appointed as senior political representative for the United States in Romania, with the personal rank of Minister. As General Cortlandt Van R. Schuyler, the chief of the U.S. military representation on the Allied Control Commission in Romania described it, Berry's primary task was to establish and maintain informed channels with the king and the Romanian government. From this position, Berry witnessed first-hand the events that led to the installation of a communist regim

LEADIN:

As promised, the series with stories form communism continues. This time, I'll translate a story taking place in mid 1980s communist Romania. Mid 1980s was the period in which severe rationalization of even the most basic goods had commenced (pretty much like modern Venezuela).
I hope you enjoy it!

Christian Rakovsky was a Bulgarian socialist revolutionary, a Bolshevik politician and Soviet diplomat; he was also noted as a journalist, physician, and essayist. Rakovsky's political career took him throughout the Balkans and into France and Imperial Russia; for part of his life, he was also a Romanian citizen.
