Our planet’s diverse, thriving ecosystems may seem like permanent fixtures, but they’re actually vulnerable to collapse. Jungles can become deserts, and reefs can become lifeless rocks. What makes one ecosystem strong and another weak in the face of change? Kim Preshoff details why the answer, to a large ext

What is biodiversity and why is it important?
Biodiversity is the term used to encompass the variety of all living organisms on Earth, including their genetic diversity, species diversity and the diversity of marine, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, together with their associated evolutionary and ecological processes. But as biodiversity is also a human concept, different people bring their own set of values to bear on it. Dr Steve Morton

Paul Andersen explains the importance of biodiversity. He starts by describing how biodiversity can be species, genetic or ecosystem diversity. He explains the importance of keystone species in an environment and gives two examples; the jaguar and the sea otter. He finishes with a quote from the father of biodiversity, E.O. Wilson.

Peatlands – climate regulation and biodiversity
Peatlands are habitats with a highly specialized flora and fauna. But peatlands also play an important role in global climate regulation. Peatlands cover only 3% of the land, but contain more carbon than the entire forest biomass of the world. When peatlands are drained, the hitherto well preserved carbon is released as greenhouse gas to the atmosphere. That is why it is important to keep the peat

That is why it is important to keep the peatlands wet. For biodiversity conservation and for the climate.
This film is focusing on the importance of preserving and restoring peatlands and gives examples of restoration projects from the Nordic and Baltic countries.

That is why it is important to keep the peatlands wet. For biodiversity conservation and for the climate.
This film is focusing on the importance of preserving and restoring peatlands and gives examples of restoration projects from the Nordic and Baltic countries.
