The Irish elk (Megaloceros giganteus) or Irish giant deer, is an extinct species of deer in the genus Megaloceros and is one of the largest deer that ever lived. Its range extended across Eurasia, from Ireland to northern Asia and Africa. A related form is recorded from China during the Late Pleistocene. The most recent remains of the species have been carbon dated to about 7,700 years ago in Siberia. Although most skeletons have been found in bogs in Ireland, the animal was not exclusive to Ireland and was not closely related to either of the living species currently called elk - Alces alces (the European elk, known in North America as the moose) or Cervus canadensis (the North American elk or wapiti). Early phylogenetic analyses supported the idea of a sister-group relationship between fallow deer (Dama dama) and the Irish Elk. However, newer morphological studies prove that the Irish elk is more closely related to its modern regional counterparts of the Red Deer (Cervus elaphus). For this reason, the name "Giant Deer" is used in some publications.

The elk or wapiti (Cervus canadensis) is one of the largest species within the deer family, Cervidae, in the world, and one of the largest land mammals in North America and eastern Asia. This animal should not be confused with the larger moose (Alces alces), to which the name "elk" applies in the British Isles and Eurasia. Apart from the moose, the only other member of the deer family to rival the elk in size is the south Asian sambar (Rusa unicolor).
Elk range in forest and forest-edge habitat, feeding on grasses, plants, leaves and bark. Male elk have large antlers which are shed each year. Males also engage in ritualized mating behaviors during the rut, including posturing, antler wrestling (sparring), and bugling, a loud series of vocalizations which establishes dominance over other males and attracts females.
Although native to North America and eastern Asia, they have adapted well to countries where they have been introduced, including Argentina, Australia and New Zealand. Their great adaptability may threaten endemic species and ecosystems into which they have been introduced. Elk are susceptible to a number of infectious diseases, some of which can be transmitted to livestock. Efforts to eliminate infectious diseases from elk populations, largely through vaccination, have had mixed success.
Video of my Archery Bull taken on a 5 day backpack hunt. Video starts about 15 minutes into a setup on a herd bull with about 12 cows and 2 satellite bulls we were aware of. We worked within about 150 yards of herd and then I had the shooter (Todd) move another 50 yards forward to get set. I started a calling sequence with assembly cow calls and estrus calls. The bull would not leave the bench but continued calling and shadowing my movements left and right of him. Eventually I started scraping a tree and that committed him. He came within 15 yards of Todd but we believe Todd's shot hit a tree branch (can be heard before bull comes into view). I continued calling and the rest you can watch. The hunt was an amazing DIY OTC adventure and one I will remember for the rest of my life. H...

Update: I've been in contact with the photographer in the above video and we would both like to issue a statement regarding the news of the National Park Service's decision to put the elk down. My statement: I am deeply saddened by the fate of the elk. It has certainly pulled a black cloud over this whirlwind "viral video" experience. I spoke to the reporter who broke the story and she assured me the decision was based on a pattern of aggressive behavior that began prior to the incident documented in this video. The behavior was the result of visitors feeding the elk and conditioning them to seek food from humans. This video only serves as an example of the elk's dangerous behavior, not an impetus to it. Again, it brings me great sadness to learn of this beautiful animal's demise and th...
We get asked a lot how we get the meat from the mountain to our home. Since we are usually hunting the backcountry we have to butcher them on the mountain and haul them back on our backpacks. Short Video of my dads Colorado Archery Elk Hunt. Close calls, Screaming bulls and kill shot!
Watch in HD. This hunt took place in MT on Sep.3, 2016
OMG - Just when you thought you had seen it all.......and we see a lot of crazy Elk behavior here in Evergreen, CO....but this Takes The Cake for sure! We were just sitting down for our morning coffee when I watched this young elk poking his head into the entrance of the trampoline..when all of a sudden he decides to jump in for some fun! Getting out proves to be a bit harder than getting in!!! The Elk's friend on the outside actually looks like he wants to get in and join the fun while the Mom looks on. For any viewers offended by my wife's comment on the notion of shooting it....the only reason my wife suggested doing so was to keep it from suffering if it got too badly hurt due to the hole in the tramp. We recently watched in horror as a fox was strangled to death in our neighbor's s...

This is video of the elk rut in Estes Park, CO in the fall of 2009. The elk are in a frenzy, and don't care about people around!
