British woman jailed for a year in Iran for watching a volleyball Match.Ghoncheh Ghavami, 25, was arrested on June 20 outside Azadi Stadium in Tehran where the Iran versus Italy game was being played. A British woman arrested in Iran after trying to watch a men's volleyball match has been sentenced to a year in prison, according to reports. Ghoncheh Ghavami, 25, who is also Iranian, was arrested on June 20 outside Tehran's Azadi Stadium. She and others were demanding that women be allowed in to watch a volleyball match between Iran and Italy, local media claims. She was charged by a court in Tehran with activities and propaganda against the Islamic Republic. The semi-official ILNA news agency quoted her lawyer, Alireza Tabatabaie, on Saturday as saying her sentence may be cut due to previous good behaviour. Ghavami was released soon after her arrest in June but was re-arrested days later when she was called back to reclaim personal belongings that authorities had confiscated. In October, she went on a two-week hunger strike. Britain, which has no permanent diplomatic presence in Iran but has said it plans to reopen its embassy soon, had previously protested Ghavami's detention. There was no immediate comment on Sunday from the foreign ministry in London. Iranian women in the Islamic Republic are banned from watching certain male sports events such as football and volleyball. Tabatabaie said "various reasons" had prevented him from meeting his client in the lead-up to Saturday's hearing. Ghavami's detention came shortly before the arrest in July of another dual-nationality citizen, Jason Rezaian, an Iranian-American reporter for the Washington Post, who is being held without charge. His mother and brother called last week for the 38-year-old's release. "After 100 days it's time for Iran to concede Jason's innocence and release him," Mary Breme Rezaian and Ali Rezaian wrote in a statement posted online on Thursday. The United States has no direct diplomatic relations with Iran.

30 Iranian women qualify for Rio 2016

Despite 1,345 medals being handed out at the Incheon 2014 Asian Para Games in South Korea, the most historical arguably went to the Iranian women’s sitting volleyball team as they reached the finals and qualified for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games for the very first time, making it one of the Top 50 Moments of 2014. Iran overcame Sri Lanka and Japan on their way to the finals, before losing to London 2012 Paralympic champions China in the final. Despite the result, their silver medal meant they still qualified for Rio 2016. In the preliminary rounds, Iran flew past Sri Lanka in a quick three sets in 38 minutes, building their confidence for the latter stages. They then beat Japan in the semi-finals, comfortably winning in three sets (18-26, 15-25, 23-25), to reach the final and claim revenge on the side that beat them at this stage at the 2010 Asian Para Games in Guangzhou, China. Zeinab Maleki Dizicheh, top scorer for Iran in the semi-final, said she was delighted that the team achieved what they set out to. “Our main goal was the final and qualifying for the Paralympic Games for the first time. My team was overjoyed,” she said. “I was waiting four years for these Games. All these successes are because of our efforts and more improvements since Guangzhou.” Since her first professional competition in Egypt in 2008, Maleki Dizicheh has learnt that defeat powers you on to victory, and says that her personal philosophy is that “After any loss, there is a victory. It’s just that I should fight for it.” The team certainly fought in Incheon, going into the final confident and prepared. Ahead of Incheon the team attended six different sport camps focusing on techniques, tactics and overall fitness. Going into the final against London 2012 champions China, revision was key. “When we reached the final, we watched our competitions with China again and again to find out our weaknesses and strengths, to know more about the Chinese team,” Zeinab said. In the finals, Iran fought hard but lost in three sets (15-25, 12-25, 15-25). Again Maleki Dizicheh was top scorer, driving the team forwards with her excellent ball handling skills and creative hitting. “China are the champions in Paralympic Games and World Championships,” she said. “We hoped to do better, but as this Iranian team had not participated in any international competitions before Incheon, we did not have enough experience. “I am sure we will compete much better next time against China.” Now, Iran are looking forward to the first ever Paralympic Games in the team’s history and Maleki Dizicheh is looking to go one step further and win gold in Rio. “After four hard-working years, we have qualified for the Paralympic Games for the first time. Britain, which has no permanent diplomatic presence in Iran but has said it plans to reopen its embassy soon, said it had several worries about the way Ghavami had been treated and now reportedly sentenced to a jail term. “We are concerned about reports that Ghoncheh Ghavami has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for 'propaganda against the state,'” a spokesman from the Foreign Office in London said in a statement. “We have concerns about the grounds for this prosecution, due process during the trial, and Miss Ghavami's treatment whilst in custody.” Iran does not recognize dual citizenship and treats dual nationals as Iranians. Ghavami was released soon after her arrest in June but was re-arrested days later when she was called back to reclaim personal belongings that authorities had confiscated. My name's Michael and I'm the Marketing Manager for Wild Frontiers. I'm here at the magnificent site of Persepolis in Iran. I've been in Iran for two weeks now and so far I've been enchanted by this fascinating country. CITIES The capital Tehran is most people's starting point, and in this busy city you can see ostentatious ornaments from the royal household in the crown jewels museum, and wander around the Shah's old residence, Golestan Palace. Just north of Tehran you can visit the Elburz Mountains for skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer. But the real highlights lie elsewhere. In the off-the-beaten-track city of Yazd you'll find a cityscape dotted with the ingenious wind tunnels -- which could be described as the world's first air-conditioning system - the ancient Zoroastrian site of the Towers of Silence, the magnificent Friday Mosque and a number of beautiful palaces and gardens. Shiraz meanwhile is a lovely university town, known as the city of poets, wine, literature and flowers, and is a real delight. I particularly loved visiting the atmospheric tomb of the Persian poet Hafez. In the evenings it has a magical atmosphere as people gather to read poetry and celebrate the life of this revered poet. Shiraz is also blessed with numerous picturesque mosques and beautiful gardens. The jewel in the Persian crown is undoubtedly the beautiful city of Esfahan, which has one of the largest squares in the world in the breathtaking Naqsh Jahan Square and probably the most stunning Islamic architecture found anywhere. Esfahan is unbelievably picturesque, with its famed bridges and lively bazaars. ANCIENT SITES Iran has a long and rich history, with the Persian Empire at one point ruling over 44% of the world's population. The country is home to some world-class archaeological sites, including the rock-carved tombs of Nagsh e Rostam, where Darius the great is buried, and the spectacular Achamaenid palace complex at Persepolis. This ancient palace was built by Darius the Great to celebrate events such as the Persian New Year, when representatives from the four corners of the empire would congregate. This vast site merits at least a couple of hours to explore the ruins and bas reliefs. SCENERY But it's not only about the cities and ancient sites, the scenery of Iran is an unexpected highlight. From beautiful picnic spots such as the Murgon Waterfalls, to fertile valleys in the Bavanat Mountains, where you can encounter Kashqai nomads and see a way of life that has changed little over centuries. In the Dena mountains around Yasuj you'll find an alpine scenery of snow-capped mountains, lakes and streams. It is well worth spending some time away from the better-known cultural sites to explore this lesser-known side of Iran. It really is a beautiful country. THE PEOPLE The people of Iran are another real highlight, being welcoming and keen to engage in conversation about everything from politics to football. You are likely to be surrounded by schoolkids asking you questions, offered tea and invited to share in picnics with the locals pretty much wherever you go. If ever a people were misrepresented by a regime it would be the Iranians. Thanks to a baby boom in the 80's, over 60% of its 70 million population are aged under 30. This generation is well-educated, worldly, and exposed to global media through the internet. Walking around the streets -- which are incidentally very safe - this certainly feels like a nation on the cusp of change. So forget about any preconceptions you may have about safety, security, or the welcome you'll receive in Iran. In this version, the last episode of Iran Travel Guide, Mohsen Nazaran , the host of the show traveled to Kish Island. It is part of the Hormozgan Province of Iran. Due to its free trade zone status, it is touted as a consumer's paradise, with numerous malls, shopping centres, tourist attractions, and resort hotels. Then he went to Tezerj waterfall in Hormozgan Province. Then, to The Borujerdi House, a historic house in Kashan. The house was built in 1857. It consists of a rectangular beautiful courtyard, delightful wall paintings by the royal painter Kamal-ol-molk, and three 40 meter tall wind towers which help cool the house to unusually cool temperatures. The house took eighteen years to build using 150 craftsmen. Then he went to Abyaneh, Shemshak ski resort in Tehran, Chehel Sotoun in Isfahan, the old bazzar of Isfahan and Shoormast lake in Mazandaran province.

The US House of Representatives has approved legislation that would end the collection of phone records from millions of Americans by the National Security Agency (NSA) despite opposition from some Senate Republicans. The bill, named USA Freedom Act, was passed n Wednesday 338 to 88, with broad bipartisan support.  ... A federal appeals court ruled last week that the NSA’s bulk collection of phone records is illegal ... ... ....

Hundreds of Myanmar migrants stranded on a boat for a week in the Andaman Sea with no food or water are so desperate they are drinking their own urine. The fishing boat, carrying about 350 people of the Muslim Rohingya minority, has been refused entry to Thailand ... They said 10 people had died - their bodies were thrown overboard....
