The US Senate is this evening deciding on South Africa's inclusion in the African Growth and Opportunity Act. AGOA as it's known has given South African and other African preferential access to U.S. markets. But some Senators have argued that South Africa should not be included in a renewal of the act, especially because we have set up our own trade barriers to U.S. chicken.
In recent months there's been a major diplomatic effort - with South African ministers and members of the poultry industry flying to the US. Our sources in the US say that South Africa is included in the new draft law - but with strict terms. To discuss we're now joined by reporter Kate Fischer.

A drawn-out dispute over US chicken and meat exports to South Africa has escalated. U.S. President Barack Obama has announced in a letter to Congress that he plans to suspend certain trade benefits for the country under the African Growth and Opportunity Act, AGOA, in 60 days time. It comes after South Africa failed to eliminate long-standing barriers to U.S. poultry, pork, and beef imports, and also failed to meet a key deadline to resume imports of U.S. poultry.

A drawn-out dispute over US chicken and meat exports to South Africa has escalated. U.S. President Barack Obama has announced in a letter to Congress that he plans to suspend certain trade benefits for the country under the African Growth and Opportunity Act, AGOA, in 60 days time. It comes after South Africa failed to eliminate long-standing barriers to U.S. poultry, pork, and beef imports, and also failed to meet a key deadline to resume imports of U.S. poultry.
