Read the entire issue devoted to South Sudan: http://www.vice.com/read/saving-south-sudan
Late last year, South Sudan's president, Salva Kiir, accused his former vice president, Riek Machar, of attempting a coup d'état amid accusations of rampant corruption within the government. Infighting immediately broke out within the presidential guard, sparking what has now become a brutal tribal and civil war that has pitted Machar's ethnic Nuer loyalists against the majority Dinka, who have sided with Kiir. Machar narrowly escaped assassination, fleeing to the deep bush as Kiir's troops razed his home and killed his bodyguards. And now the world's newest sovereign nation is in imminent danger of becoming a failed state.
In February, journalists and filmmakers Robert Young Pelton and Tim Freccia set out on a grueling mission to locate Machar in his secret hideout in Akobo and get his side of the story. Accompanying was Machot Lat Thiep, a former child soldier and Lost Boy who had advised on South Sudan's constitution and now works as a manager of a Costco in Seattle. Machot acted as a guide of sorts, arranging Pelton and Freccia's rendezvous with Machar through a series of endless satellite-phone calls to old contacts and rebel platoons, who would eventually guide the group to the deposed vice president.
After spending a couple days with Machar, he granted Pelton and Freccia unprecedented access to the front lines of a battle in Malakal, where for the first time in history the pair documented the heretofore mythical White Army as they looted, murdered, and pillaged their way to some twisted interpretation of "victory."
Saving South Sudan is a multi-platform exploration of the horrors of the country's newest civil war. We devoted an entire issue of the magazine to Robert Young Pelton and Tim Freccia's sprawling 35,000-plus word epic exploration of the crisis in South Sudan. It's a companion piece of sorts; watch the documentary and read the issue or vice versa. But you won't get a full scope of the situation without doing both.

While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings.

DemocracyNow.org - Peace talks between South Sudan’s warring sides have failed to reach a deal to end a civil war which has claimed tens of thousands of lives in the world’s youngest nation. Last week, the United States proposed implementing a United Nations arms embargo on South Sudan and new sanctions unless the government signs a peace deal to end the conflict. Now the situation in South Sudan is the subject of a new documentary, "We Come as Friends," by Austrian director Hubert Sauper that provides an aerial view of the conflict in Sudan from a shaky, handmade two-seater plane. The film depicts American investors, Chinese oilmen, United Nations officials and Christian missionaries struggling to shape Sudan according to their own visions, while simultaneously applauding the alleged "independence" of the world’s newest state. What emerges is a devastating critique of the consequences of cultural and economic imperialism. We speak with Hauper and feature excerpts from the film, which debuts this week in theaters.

After twenty months of a deadly civil war, a tentative peace agreement is in place signed between South Sudan and the rebel forces.
President Salva Kiir Mayardit admitted signing the deal despite ‘serious reservations’ with his rival – Riek Machar - the man who will act as his deputy in the new power sharing unity government under the Compromise Peace Agreement.
Kiir is under pressure from the international community with the threat of more crippling sanctions if the South Sudanese president reneges on the deal. Is peace achievable or is it all too soon for a country still struggling with its tumultuous past?

wn.com/Africa Today Western Interference Before South Sudan Peace Deal
After twenty months of a deadly civil war, a tentative peace agreement is in place signed between South Sudan and the rebel forces.
President Salva Kiir Mayardit admitted signing the deal despite ‘serious reservations’ with his rival – Riek Machar - the man who will act as his deputy in the new power sharing unity government under the Compromise Peace Agreement.
Kiir is under pressure from the international community with the threat of more crippling sanctions if the South Sudanese president reneges on the deal. Is peace achievable or is it all too soon for a country still struggling with its tumultuous past?

VICE travels to West Africa to rummage through the messy remains of a country ravaged by 14 years of civil war. Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust.

The war in South Sudan began in murky circumstances in mid-December, when tribal factions within the country's army, the SPLA, began fighting each other in the center of the capital, Juba. The SPLA quickly fractured into two camps: an insurgency drawn from members of former vice president Riek Machar's Nuer tribe and troops who remained loyal to President Salva Kiir, of the Dinka tribe. Both sides have been accused of committing gross human rights abuses during the conflict. South Sudan is only four years old, but the world's youngest nation tops the rank of failed states worldwide.
After decades of conflict with its neighbour Sudan, long-sought autonomy in 2011 was meant to be a dream come true, but the country has been wracked by violence ever since.
Thousands of people have been killed, and over a million displaced, as President Salva Kiir battles his rival, rebel leader and former vice president, Riek Machar.
Amid the chaos, rising inflation and poverty has left 3.8 million people without enough food - raising the spectre of famine.
Despite its vast oil reserves, the country is producing at only one-third of its oil capacity, compared with levels from 2011, and the government is earning only $10 per barrel compared to the international price of $60.
Also on Counting the Cost: Behind Saudi Arabia's stock market opening; the future of Afghanistan's lamb farmers; and the rise of Formula E.
Catherine Soi reports from Juba on the local businesses that are suffering due to the lost revenue.

South Sudan became the world's newest state when it seceded from Sudan in 2011 but by December 2013 President Salva Kiir had sacked his entire cabinet and accused his former vice-president Riek Machar of instigating a coup, which sparked off violent clashes in the capital Juba.
The initial conflict may have been based on a power struggle between two of the top members of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement but the divisions between two of the largest ethnic groups, the Dinka and the Nuer, soon became the driving force of tit-for-tat attacks across the country.
The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has warned that they need greater military force to protect civilians in the country and aid agencies are predicting food, water and medical supply shortages. With a humanitarian disaster seemingly on the way, we look at the background to what's going on in South Sudan.

July 9, 2013 marked a moment of hope for South Sudan when it split from Sudan to become the world's newest nation.
A chance to put behind decades of war and hostilities.
But after a little more than two years of freedom, the country was plunged back into civil war.
Fighting began in the capital Juba in December 2013, when president Salva Kiir accused his sacked deputy Riek Machar of planning a coup.
A report by the UN mission in the country said a 'recent upsurge in fighting has not only been marked by allegations of "killing, rape, abduction, looting, arson and displacement, but by a new brutality and intensity."
It went on: "The scope and level of cruelty that has characterised the reports suggests a depth of antipathy that exceeds political differences."
With South Sudan now in the grip of a humanitarian crisis, what can be done to bring peace to this fledgling state?
Presenter: Adrian Finighan
Guests:
Elias Nyamlell Wakoson - Researcher from the Ebony Center for Strategic Studies, a Think Tank promoting good governance in South Sudan.
Eric Reeves - Professor and Sudan Historian at Smith College, Massachusetts.

Inside Story: South Sudan's President Salva Kiir has signed a peace deal that it is hoped, will end 20 months of war.
The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people. And brought the country to the brink of famine and economic collapse.
Rebel leader Riek Machar signed the deal last week, but President Kiir had, until on Wednesday, expressed reservations.
The agreement calls for an immediate end to the fighting. And the creation of a demilitarised zone in the capital Juba.
It also calls for a transitional power-sharing government, with Machar returning as South Sudan's Vice President.
But could the two rivals work together again? And could the deal restore peace in South Sudan?
Presenter: Laura Kyle

South Sudan's peace agreement signed in August was meant to end a 21-month-old civil war that has left thousands dead and many more displaced in the wake of the country's historic declaration of independence in 2011.
Hundreds of thousands of people fled their homes after experiencing horrible crimes. Last month, a previously secret report by the African Union was finally made public. It contains shocking details of human rights abuses in South Sudan, committed not only by government troops but by opposition militia as well.
It paints a grim picture of what is happening in the country.
Talk to Al Jazeera In The Field goes deep inside the country to find out the truth about a failed state, a country letting its people slip into despair. We meet South Sudanese women and listen to their stories of broken dreams and a stolen future.

For Your grace on South Sudan,
The land of great abundance
Uphold us united in peace and harmony.
Oh motherland
We rise raising flag with the guiding star
And sing songs of freedom with joy;
For justice, liberty and prosperity
Shall forever more reign.
Oh great patriots
Let us stand up in silence and respect,
Saluting our martyrs whose blood
Cemented our national foundation,
We vow to protect our nation.
