Les routes qui mènent à Tobrouk et Benghazi, toujours aux mains des rebelles, sont prises d'assaut. It has been a week since coalition countries began their bombing campaign to impose restrictions on Libya's government.
That air raid has helped opposition fighters retake the strategic town of Ajdabiya, and they are also claiming the oil town of Brega.
It is yet another major milestone in the battle for Libya.

STORYLINE
Rebels were defending the western gates of Ajdabiya on Tuesday as forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi continued to attack their positions.
Explosions could be seen less than 1.5 kilometres (1 mile) from the western gates as Gadhafi's forces shelled rebel lines.
Rebels believe Gadhafi's forces could attack the western entrance to Ajdabiya from Brega, currently in government hands.
A rebel scout sent down the road to the west said he encountered government forces and was drawn into a brief gun battle before falling back.
Rebel forces are employing an array of make-shift weaponry, including pickup trucks fitted with multiple rocket launchers taken from planes and attack helicopters.
The nearby desert is littered with bullet casings, scraps of metal and more than a dozen blackened or overturned vehicles, including tanks and pickup trucks fitted with anti-aircraft guns.
The eastern city of Ajdabiya is a critical gateway to Benghazi, the opposition's de facto capital and Libya's second largest city.
At a hospital in Ajdabiya, doctors treated a rebel with a gunshot wound to the head after he was hit accidentally by a fellow rebel fighter.
On Sunday NATO airstrikes hit Gadhafi's tanks, largely stopping heavy shelling of Ajdabiya by government forces.
The airstrikes helped the rebels push back government troops who had been advancing toward Benghazi on an east-west highway along the country's northern Mediterranean coast.
With some breathing room around Ajdabiya, the rebels could mount another attempt to retake and hold the key oil ports of Ras Lanouf and Brega further west, which have changed hands repeatedly throughout the fighting.

Rebel forces continued to push to seize the the strategic eastern oil town of Brega on Tuesday, working to clear the area of landmines that have slowed their advance.
They suffered losses as government forces in trucks disguised with rebel flags shelled their positions near the frontline town.
Rebels took positions 10 kilometres (6 miles) east of the oil port, working to clear the area of landmines they claim the mines were planted by Gadhafi's forces.
"Maybe within three or four days we will solve this problems of mines and we will be in Brega," said rebel spokesman Ahmed Bani.
The rebels are fighting in a residential area on Brega's eastern side and control about one-third of the town, another rebel spokesman said.
A doctor at the hospital in the nearby city of Ajdabiya said a lot of severely injured fighters were taken there on Tuesday, most of them with head and chest injuries caused by gunshots and explosions.
"The numbers of casualties exceeded the number of beds available," said Hiba Shasha.
Another doctor at the same hospital said eight rebels were killed and dozens wounded Tuesday, raising the total to at least 34 rebels killed in five days of fighting.
He said the rebels had taken four prisoners, and one dead government soldier had been taken to the rebel hospital. It is unclear how many other government soldier have been killed.
The Libyan government rarely provides information on its casualties.

STORYLINE
There were scenes of grief in a Benghazi hospital morgue on Tuesday as relatives identified loved ones killed in fighting between forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and rebel fighters.
A hospital doctor said many of the dead and injured had been brought in from Ajdabiya, a city of 140-thousand that is the gateway to the east, and which has been under siege for a week.
Doctor Gebril Hewadi said civilians in Ajdabiya were being killed by Gadhafi's forces, and that one wounded man had been shot in his home.
"I think he (Gadhafi) has come just to kill all the people in Benghazi, to destroy Benghazi," he added.
The United States, Britain and France have called on Gadhafi to end his troops' advance toward the rebel-held city of Benghazi and pull them out of the cities of Misrata, Ajdabiya and Zawiya.
Neither the rebels nor Gadhafi's forces are strong enough to hold Ajdabiya or Misrata, the last major city in western Libya held by the rebel force trying to end Gadhafi's four-decade rule.
Residents of the city 125 miles (200 kilometres) southeast of Tripoli, say shelling and sniper attacks are unrelenting.

A Libyan rebel in the strategic city of Ajdabiya was on Friday using songs to uplift the spirits of other anti-government fighters on the frontline.
Armed with a guitar and a powerful set of vocal chords the rebel sang inspirational songs in Arabic and English telling his fighting friends that the rebels know how to fight and make freedom.
The morale boost could come in handy at a time when the battle between Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi s forces and coalition forces showed little signs of abating.
On Friday coalition warplanes struck Gadhafi s forces outside Ajdabiya the gateway to the rebel-held east hitting an artillery battery and armoured vehicles.
The strikes were intended to give a measure of relief to the city whose residents have fled or cowered under more than a week of shelling and fighting between rebels and government troops.
Ajdabiya has been under siege for more than a week with the rebels holding the city centre and scattered checkpoints but facing relentless shelling from government troops on the outskirts.
Residents are without electricity or drinking water and many have fled.

STORYLINE:
It is a grim task, collecting the dead from the revolutionary upheaval and its resulting violence.
The unit responsible has carried out its task for the last 10 months of conflict, starting with the battles in the east, and working its west, as revolutionary fighters swept away the old regime in Libya.
They start the day at the Ibn Sina Hospital, where loyalists and civilians sought treatment, only to perish from their wounds because of a lack of medicine and doctors.
The bodies of pro-Moammar Gadhafi loyalists and civilians are mixed in the storage drawers of the morgue, decomposing because the electricity to keep them cold was cut when the battle for Sirte began more than four weeks ago.
They continue to sweep through abandoned buildings in the battle-scarred city.
In one, they find the body of a woman, killed by shell fire in a back bedroom of her home. They carry her out, to join the growing number of casualties picked up during the day's work.
Later they find the body of an NTC fighter from Ajdabiya in a field near the outskirts of the city. Two of his friends are there to identify him, and weep at the confirmation of his death.
Dr. Ahmed Salem explains they have picked up 30 bodies through the day, and he says many died under terrible circumstances, as desperate pro-Gadhafi loyalists retreat.
"Some of the patients had received medical treatment, then were taken out and executed. We found four people with their hands bound behind them dead next to a government reception centre," he says.
After collecting the dead everyday, the unit takes the bodies to a small cemetery 60 kilometres (37 miles) West in Ghazaya.
There they are buried according to Muslim custom, a final benediction to their tragic fate.

STORYLINE
An apparent NATO airstrike slammed into a rebel combat convoy Thursday, killing at least five fighters and sharply boosting anger among anti-government forces after the second bungled mission in a week blamed on the military alliance.
The attack - near the front lines outside the eastern oil port of Brega - sparked a retreat of troops and civilians in convoy.
Fighters described dozens killed or wounded, but a precise casualty toll was not immediately known after the incident.
A doctor at Ajdabiya Hospital reported 16 injured, some with serious burns, while rebel leaders said other casualties were left in the field in the chaos to flee the area.
The incident has also brought fresh questions about coordination between NATO and the patchwork of rebel militias in a conflict described by a senior U.S. commander as a stalemate that could eventually require the Pentagon to reassert more power, and possibly even send in ground forces.
Tensions between the rebels and NATO were flaring even before the latest accident, with the fighters criticising the alliance for doing too little to help them.
A rebel commander described the attack as a likely NATO accident, but said it would be a "bigger mistake" if it was waged by Moammar Gadhafi's pilots and exposed holes in NATO's efforts to ground Libyan warplanes.
In Brussels, NATO did not directly acknowledge responsibility for a blundered airstrike on the rebels, but noted that the area where the attack occurred was "unclear and fluid with mechanised weapons travelling in all directions."
Opposition commanders have complained in recent days that the airstrikes were coming too slowly and lacking the precision to give the rebels a clear edge.

Visit Libya
Libya. Warm sun, warm hearts. A great country with a great history, a country of breathtaking beauty. High mountain chains are just one of the beauties of its fabulous landscape with green fields and sun-drenched Mediterranean beaches. The desert, watered by magnificent oasis, extends far into Africa. Fabulous villages and cities scattered amongst meadows, with oasis everywhere. Historical monuments forests, towering mountains...
and a warm Libyan Arab welcome. Libya's strategic, geographical position and profound history make it a vital link between the eastern and western parts of the Arab world, and between Europe and Africa. The country has known its ups and downs, but the historical monuments are a testimony of the great Libyan civilization of old. Look at the engravings of the AKAKUS mountains, the drawings in the MATCHANDOUSH caves.
The cities of JARMA, ZAKAKRA, and SABHA' in the south, and the historical city of GHIRZA in the centre. Libya has played host to many civilizations, and has enriched civilization in its turn, with writings, drawings and engravings in the caves of TADRART mountains, and archaeological treasures from ATAFT. The Phoenician, Roman, and Byzantine ports of TRIPOLI, SABRATAH, LIBDAH, SHAH'HAT, SUSAH, TUKRAH, and TALMITHA. The old Islamic cities such as SIRT, DARNAH, and AJDABIYA, and other cities in the heart of the desert, including GHADAMES, ZUWAYLAH, JALU, OJLA, GHAT, and FEZZAN. Not forgetting the places and fortresses of GHARYAN, MIZDAH, AL-QARYAT, YIFRAN, JADU, NALUT, MISALLATAH, and AWINAT. The first site most tourists visit is TRIPOLI, Libya's biggest city, the queen of the seas.
It is an historical site. the city of Islamic civilization, Arab art and handicraft, where every monument tells a story. TRIPOLI has changed little since its foundation in the first millennium BC: it is still a lush garden filled with olive trees, palms, grapevines, and orange groves. The city has a wealth of old and new monuments. Travel east or west, to nearby LIBDAH or SABRATAH, and soak up all the history.
Shopping is a great pleasure, especially in the popular markets where you can buy a great variety of Libyan handicrafts such as traditional clothes, carpets, handmade gold and silver jewellery, copper and silver dishes, leather goods, and pottery. Every kind of aquatic sport is practised in the resorts along the coast, where you will also find the port of BENGHAZI, which combines magnificent buildings with large, open spaces.
In nearby SULUQ stands the mausoleum of OMAR MOKHTAR, hero of the Libyan Resistance during the Italian occupation. Take the highway east to the magnificent cities of the Green Mountain: DARNAH with its falls and splendid coast; AL BAYDA', a quiet city high up in the mountains; ancient SHAH'HAT (Cyrene) and beautiful SUSAH (Apollonia), TULMAYTHAH, TUKRAH, RA'S AL HILAL.... Libya offers you two thousand kilometers of splendid beaches, and some beautiful small cities each with its typical architecture and special characteristics, like AUWARAH, TUBRUQ, MISRATAH, AZ ZAWIYAH, AL-KHUMS, and ZLITAN. Explore Libya's desert in WADI ASH SHATI, the plain of AWAYNAT, BRAK, MURZUQ, and the oasis of AL KUFRAH, ZALLAH and BAZIMAH. Then cool off in AL BAYDA' or near AL MARJ, or on the plain of DARNAH.
As you go further and further into the desert, all you meet are waves and waves, "the great sand sea", but then there are the refreshing oasis. The history, the monuments and tales told by the locals make this place unique. It is a feast for the senses.. The jewel of the desert is GHADAMES, a mélange of natural beauty, important monuments and a distinctive architectural style for which it is famous. Libya may be the land of ancient civilizations, but it also looks to the future. It is a country of peace. Libya, a land touched by history.

LIBYA History Repeats: Oil Rich Eastern Province Declares Autonomy, Forms State Of Barqa

Eastern Libya Declares Autonomous Government, Tripoli Rejects Separate Barqa State
By ESAM MOHAMED 10/24/13 0
TRIPOLI, Libya -- TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — The leaders of a movement for self-rule in oil-rich eastern Libyan unilaterally announced Thursday the formation of a shadow government, the latest challenge to the weakened central authority.
The announcement came several months after the movement, backed by some militias and local tribes, declared the eastern half of Libya to be an autonomous state, named Barqa, claiming broad self-rule powers and control over resources.
The central government in Tripoli had rejected the declaration. It had no immediate comments on Thursday.
Advocates of the self-rule in the east, who long has complained about discrimination by the government in the capital Tripoli, have been pushing for the reviving the system maintained under King Idris in 1951. Libya then was divided into three states, with Cyrenaica — or Barqa, as it was called in Arabic — encompassing the eastern half of the country.
Opponents fear a declaration of autonomy could be the first step toward the outright division of the country, particularly with the turmoil that struck in the aftermath of the fall of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
The tension between the central government and eastern militias and tribal leaders has already disrupted the exports of oil. Eastern militias earlier seized control of oil exporting terminals, sending production plunging from 1.4 million barrels a day to around 600,000, robbing the country of its main revenue source.
Abd-Rabbo al-Barassi, the head of the newly declared Barqa government, said the aim is to improve distribution of resources and undermine the hold of the centralized system that has discriminated against their region.
"The aim of the regional government is to share resources in a better fashion, and to end the centralized system adopted by the authorities in Tripoli," al-Barassi said at a news conference in the northeastern town of Ajdabiya.
He dismissed accusations that the movement's leaders are only seeking to take control of the region's oil resources. "We only want Barqa's share according to the 1951 constitution," he said.
The new government is made up of 24 posts, which don't include the defense or foreign affairs portfolios, he said. Al-Barassi said the region will encompass four provinces, including Benghazi, Tobruk, Ajdabiya and Jebel Akhdar.
Since Gadhafi's ouster following months of civil war, Libya has been beset by lawlessness as the numerous armed men who fought against the longtime leader's forces formed into independent militias now vying for power and allying with competing politicians.
"The security file will be priority," Al-Barassi said. "It is a thorny issue leading to the chaos of illegitimate militias."
It is not clear how much support the new autonomous government will have in the country's east, though the movement's leaders have seized control of important resources. Officials in the central government have threatened to use military action against any illegal or unauthorized shipment of oils.
Meanwhile, a Libyan court on Thursday referred Gadhafi's son and more than 30 others to trial before a higher tribunal on charges ranging from murder to treason during the 2011 uprising, a senior prosecutor said.
Prosecutor Al-Seddik al-Sur said the Tripoli court also decided to appoint defense lawyers for Gadhafi's son, Seif al-Islam, and the late dictator's intelligence chief, Abdullah al-Senoussi. He did not announce a date for the trial before the Criminal Court.

Citizens Speak Out. As people across the world gather to call for improved living conditions for themselves and their families, along with political reforms that would bring greater respect for human rights and other social freedoms, their voices can be heard in countries such as Bahrain, Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Egypt, Honduras, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Syria and Yemen.
Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh made a fresh offer to protesters that he would remain in office until new elections but would meanwhile transition presidential powers to a caretaker government. However, protesters returned to the streets on Wednesday, March 30 calling for him to step down immediately. In the United Kingdom, where 500,000 people marched last Saturday in protest of austerity measures, the chief inspector of constabulary Sir Denis O'Connor added his concern, saying that the police forces face a big challenge through the proposed cuts, which will likely reduce the ability of front line personnel to protect citizens and uphold the law.
In the face of extensive questioning from the Kuwaiti Parliament over recent incidents of international diplomacy, the nation's entire Cabinet resigned on Thursday, saying that the Emir, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah may select a new government that he feels is suitable to the public interest.
PressTV reports that Bahraini security forces have expanded their repression of the protesters by going into villages surrounding the capital and using live ammunition, resulting in the death of 15-year-old Sayed Ahmed Wednesday. In response to the government's deployment of foreign troops to stop the protestors, the Iranian Parliament on Thursday called for Saudi Arabia to remove her forces from Bahrain to avoid further complications and encourage restored tranquility to the region.
In Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), forces loyal to Alassane Ouattara, recognized internationally as the legitimate winner of the November 2010 elections, overtook the administrative capital of Yamoussoukro Wednesday. The UN Security Council also unanimously voted in more sanctions against incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo, while calling for him to step down.
On Thursday, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad ordered the Supreme Judicial Council to form a committee to probe the deaths of both civilians and military personnel in the Daraa and Latakia protesters' turmoil. He also announced the creation of a legal committee that has been given until April 25 to study and draft legislation that preserves national security while it considers lifting the country's 48-year-old emergency law.
Following reports on Wednesday that Libyan Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa had defected to the United Kingdom, it was reported Thursday that Ali Abdessalam Treki, recently appointed as the new Libyan UN envoy, has also fled to Egypt, stating it is the right of the nation to live in freedom and democracy. Meanwhile, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Foreign Secretary William Hague encouraged others with close ties to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi to defect, as Libya's Deputy UN Ambassador Ibrahim Dabbashi stated that he expected more senior officials in the Libyan government to leave soon, explaining that many were finding it challenging due to tight government security in Libya.
Joining the coalition to help in addressing Libya's troubles is the United Arab Emirates, as Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke about the type of help being offered, saying that his country is opposed to arming the revolutionaries with weapons. North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen also affirmed that the NATO-led coalition's role is to protect the Libyan people, not arm them. Meanwhile, a new satellite television channel, Ahrar TV, is being set up by pro-democracy Libyan journalists with the help of the Qatari government. Human Rights Watch reported meanwhile that Libyan forces have planted land mines on the outskirts of Ajdabiya, which were discovered when a utility truck drove over and detonated two, although fortunately there were no injuries.
