Exhibition opening: January 21, 7-10pm

The exhibition Our Comics, Ourselves: Identity, Expression, and Representation in Comic Art presents the graphic stories that describe the complexity and diversity of our collective experience, and examines the social and historical contexts within which they emerged. This exhibition includes includes comic books, graphic novels, DIY comics, and various comics paraphernalia primarily from the United States, 1945 to present.

James Baldwin Reading and Discussion Group

Join us for a James Baldwin reading and discussion group, running weekly from January 23 through March 5. Participants will come together over the course of six Saturday afternoon sessions to discuss a variety of texts by James Baldwin as a lens for talking about current issues in our communities, including race, class, gentrification, and sexual orientation.

Film screening: Salt of the Earth (1954)

Join us for a screening of landmark U.S. labor film Salt of the Earth (1954) where a largely Mexican American union overcomes court injunction to gain more equitable working and living conditions. Based on collaboration between the zinc miners whose experiences inspired the film and blacklisted Hollywood talent, it serves as both a rallying call for racial justice, gender equality, and labor activism, and a model for collaborative artistic practice.

Join Budapest-based activist and photographer Gabriella Csoszó and Syrian American community organizer Sarab Al-Jijakli in dialogue about the current refugee crisis. Csoszó will share recent work documenting the political opposition in Hungary and Al-Jijakli will discuss the unfolding developments abroad. Adèle Eisenstein moderates the conversation, focusing on the power of the image to instigate social change and our responsibility as artists, activists, and citizens to come together and search for solutions. This event is a collaboration between the Interference Archive and Triangle Arts Association.
