Take a look in the shallow coastal waters of the Arctic, and you might just spot a beluga whale.
They don't look like your typical whale, though. Adapting to life among sea ice, belugas are all white in color. They also have a ridge on their back instead of a dorsal fin, and a thick layer of blubber. Scientists believe they evolved this way to stay warm in their icy Arctic surroundings.
That lump on the beluga's head is called a melon, and it can actually change shape. Scientists think this affects how they use sound as sonar to locate food and to find breathing holes in the Arctic ice sheet.
During the colder months, as the Arctic water freezes over and the ice thickens, belugas will migrate south to avoid getting trapped in the ice. They don't want to fall prey to the polar bears or killer whales that hunt them.
And that's life with the ice for beluga whales.

The showman P.T. Barnum first placed live beluga whales on display at the Boston Aquarial Gardens and in the American Museum in New York in 1861.
In the late 1950s, the beluga capture industry took off. Alaska quickly became the favored place to capture belugas until the 1970s. Canada became the predominant source for belugas destined for exhibition. This continued until 1992, when beluga capture was banned in Canada. When Canada ceased to be the source of these animals, Russia became the largest provider. Captive breeding of cetaceans is difficult, and most whales and dolphins currently in captivity around the world were deliberately captured—not rescued—from the wild.
When the defenseless animals are surrounded by high speed boats and encircled with nets, they are scared and panicked, thrashing around. Many of them die - becoming entangled or drowning. Captors mostly prefer young, because it is believed that they will be easier to adapt, but most importantly that they are not too large to be transported. Newly captured belugas are transported to a sea pen such as in the Center for marine mammal adaptation near city of Nakhodka in the Russian Far East. In such places, white whales are held in quarantine for at least a month. Here they are taught to obey humans, live in a confined space, and eat dead fish. If the animal survives, it is transported to a final destination, and exposed to the new stress: a strong physiological load, prolonged lack of food, and dehydration. Beluga whales are delivered to Russian and Ukrainian dolphinariums, or sold abroad – to China, Thailand, Vietnam and Middle East.
In 2012 Russians captured the largest number of live belugas in history (44 individuals), and the numbers are growing.
In 2013, a permit for a catch quota of 260 beluga whales was issued by the Russian Commission for Fisheries. In 2013, in the Sea of Okhotsk, 81 beluga whales were caught. Approximately 34 were accidentally killed during the capture, seven died in the temporary detention, and 3 had to be released because of the risk of death.
There are believed to be at least 230 beluga whales held captive across the world. Approximately 30 belugas are in the United States, 50 are in Canada, 20 are in Japan, and 40 are in China. Approximately 60 belugas are performing at stationary dolphinariums in Russia and ten or more are captive in Russian mobile dolphinariums.
Captive cetaceans live a life of constant stress in a cement box; to which chlorine and other irritating chemicals are added. During performances or petting sessions, they are assaulted by blaring music and crowd noise. Captive cetaceans often work 12-hour days without a break. The animals are not being starved, but trainers can make the animal hungry enough to want to perform in shows for the rewards of dead fish. This is the price that white whales and other captive cetaceans pay to entertain people.

The 4-year-old boy took a breath, ducked underwater and planted a kiss on the huge whale beside him.
A trainer then lifted Huang Yan onto the back of the beluga whale, which is about 30 times his size, and the little boy sat astride the animal's back as it glided smoothly just under the surface of the water.
"Today was a good day," Huang Yan said after swimming with Xiao Qiang the whale.
The boy's feat is the latest example in China of a bizarre athletic accomplishment involving a child.
With the Beijing Olympics less than 10 months away, pint-sized athletes are grabbing the spotlight with stunts that some criticise as unsafe or unhealthy, raising questions as to whether they are being pushed by attention-seeking adults.
"They played together a few times. In the end he and Xiao Qiang played a little and he got over his fear and now they're good friends," 55-year-old Jing Xueying said while watching Huang Yan, who sports a buzz cut with one tuft of hair at the front sprouting straight out.
Huang Yan, who goes by the nickname Yang Yang, has been going to the Polar Ocean World Aquarium in his hometown of Qingdao, an eastern Chinese coastal city, for more than four months to swim with Xiao Qiang.
He began swimming before he was even a year old and fell in love with the whale after seeing him perform in a show at the aquarium.
Beluga whales look like dolphins but have flat noses and a big forehead.
Xiao Qiang, who is 6 years old, is 3 metres (nearly 10 feet) long and weighs 450 kilograms (1,000 pounds).
Jing said she approached aquarium officials about letting her grandson swim with the beluga whale after he came home from an aquarium visit asking if he could "go and play with Xiao Qiang."
At first, officials were sceptical because they were afraid for the boy's safety, said Mu Peng, director of the aquarium's publicity department.
His grandmother isn't worried about safety, even though the whale's trainer said belugas can attack when they get angry.
It's hard to say whether Huang Yan knows what all the fuss is about.

The beluga or white whale, Delphinapterus leucas, is an Arctic and sub-Arctic cetacean. It is one of two members of the family Monodontidae, along with the narwhal. This marine mammal is commonly referred to simply as the beluga or sea canary due to its high-pitched twitter. It is up to 5 m (16 ft) in length and an unmistakable all-white color with a distinctive protuberance on the head. From a conservation perspective, the beluga is considered "near threatened" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature; however the subpopulation from the Cook Inlet in Alaska is considered critically endangered and is under the protection of the United States' Endangered Species Act. Of seven Canadian beluga populations, two are listed as endangered, inhabiting eastern Hudson Bay, and Ungava Bay.
In 1776, Peter Simon Pallas first described the beluga. It is a member of the Monodontidae family, which is in turn part of the toothed whale suborder. The Irrawaddy dolphin was once placed in the same family; however, recent genetic evidence suggests otherwise. The narwhal is the only other species within the Monodontidae besides the beluga.

The showman P.T. Barnum first placed live beluga whales on display at the Boston Aquarial Gardens and in the American Museum in New York in 1861. In the late 1950s, the beluga capture industry took off. Alaska quickly became the favored place to capture belugas until the 1970s. Canada became the predominant source for belugas destined for exhibition. This continued until 1992, when beluga capture was banned in Canada. When Canada ceased to be the source of these animals, Russia became the largest provider. In the late 1950s, the beluga capture industry took off. Alaska quickly became the favored place to capture belugas until the 1970s. Canada became the predominant source for belugas destined for exhibition. This continued until 1992, when beluga capture was banned in Canada. When Canada ceased to be the source of these animals, Russia became the largest provider. Captive breeding of cetaceans is difficult, and most whales and dolphins currently in captivity around the world were deliberately captured—not rescued—from the wild.
When the defenseless animals are surrounded by high speed boats and encircled with nets, they are scared and panicked, thrashing around. Many of them die - becoming entangled or drowning. Captors mostly prefer young, because it is believed that they will be easier to adapt, but most importantly that they are not too large to be transported. Newly captured belugas are transported to a sea pen such as in the Center for marine mammal adaptation near city of Nakhodka in the Russian Far East. In such places, white whales are held in quarantine for at least a month. Here they are taught to obey humans, live in a confined space, and eat dead fish. If the animal survives, it is transported to a final destination, and exposed to the new stress: a strong physiological load, prolonged lack of food, and dehydration. Beluga whales are delivered to Russian and Ukrainian dolphinariums, or sold abroad – to China, Thailand, Vietnam and Middle East.
In 2012 Russians captured the largest number of live belugas in history (44 individuals), and the numbers are growing.
In 2013, a permit for a catch quota of 260 beluga whales was issued by the Russian Commission for Fisheries. In 2013, in the Sea of Okhotsk, 81 beluga whales were caught. Approximately 34 were accidentally killed during the capture, seven died in the temporary detention, and 3 had to be released because of the risk of death.
There are believed to be at least 230 beluga whales held captive across the world. Approximately 30 belugas are in the United States, 50 are in Canada, 20 are in Japan, and 40 are in China. Approximately 60 belugas are performing at stationary dolphinariums in Russia and ten or more are captive in Russian mobile dolphinariums.
Captive cetaceans live a life of constant stress in a cement box; to which chlorine and other irritating chemicals are added. During performances or petting sessions, they are assaulted by blaring music and crowd noise. Captive cetaceans often work 12-hour days without a break. The animals are not being starved, but trainers can make the animal hungry enough to want to perform in shows for the rewards of dead fish. This is the price that white whales and other captive cetaceans pay to entertain people.

"After a while of contact, the whale does get used to new people. But if a stranger just wanted to touch and kiss the whale, that wouldn't work. After spending time - we spent a year or so training him - they are fine together. But it started slowly, they needed to adjust."

STORYLINE:
The 4-year-old boy took a breath, ducked underwater and planted a kiss on the huge whale beside him.
A trainer then lifted Huang Yan onto the back of the beluga whale, which is about 30 times his size, and the little boy sat astride the animal's back as it glided smoothly just under the surface of the water.
"Today was a good day," Huang Yan said after swimming with Xiao Qiang the whale.
The boy's feat is the latest example in China of a bizarre athletic accomplishment involving a child.
With the Beijing Olympics less than 10 months away, pint-sized athletes are grabbing the spotlight with stunts that some criticise as unsafe or unhealthy, raising questions as to whether they are being pushed by attention-seeking adults.
"They played together a few times. In the end he and Xiao Qiang played a little and he got over his fear and now they're good friends," 55-year-old Jing Xueying said while watching Huang Yan, who sports a buzz cut with one tuft of hair at the front sprouting straight out.
Huang Yan, who goes by the nickname Yang Yang, has been going to the Polar Ocean World Aquarium in his hometown of Qingdao, an eastern Chinese coastal city, for more than four months to swim with Xiao Qiang.
He began swimming before he was even a year old and fell in love with the whale after seeing him perform in a show at the aquarium.
Beluga whales look like dolphins but have flat noses and a big forehead.
Xiao Qiang, who is 6 years old, is 3 metres (nearly 10 feet) long and weighs 450 kilograms (1,000 pounds).
Jing said she approached aquarium officials about letting her grandson swim with the beluga whale after he came home from an aquarium visit asking if he could "go and play with Xiao Qiang."
At first, officials were sceptical because they were afraid for the boy's safety, said Mu Peng, director of the aquarium's publicity department.
His grandmother isn't worried about safety, even though the whale's trainer said belugas can attack when they get angry.
It's hard to say whether Huang Yan knows what all the fuss is about.

The 4-year-old boy took a breath, ducked underwater and planted a kiss on the huge whale beside him.
A trainer then lifted Huang Yan onto the back of the beluga whale, which is about 30 times his size, and the little boy sat astride the animal's back as it glided smoothly just under the surface of the water.
"Today was a good day," Huang Yan said after swimming with Xiao Qiang the whale.
The boy's feat is the latest example in China of a bizarre athletic accomplishment involving a child.

The beluga whale or white whale (Delphinapterus leucas) is an Arctic and sub-Arctic cetacean. It is one of two members of the family Monodontidae, along with the narwhal, and the only member of the genus Delphinapterus. This marine mammal is commonly referred to simply as the melonhead, beluga or sea canary due to its high-pitched twitter.
It is adapted to life in the Arctic, so has anatomical and physiological characteristics that differentiate it from other cetaceans. Amongst these are its unmistakable all-white colour and the absence of a dorsal fin. It possesses a distinctive protuberance at the front of its head which houses an echolocation organ called the melon, which in this species is large and plastic (deformable). The beluga's body size is between that of a dolphin's and a true whale’s, with males growing up to 5.5 m (18 ft) long and weighing up to 1,600 kg (3,500 lb). This whale has a stocky body; it has the greatest percentage of blubber. Its sense of hearing is highly developed and it possesses echolocation, which allows it to move about and find blowholes under sheet ice.
