Even though hypnotherapy historically has much older roots than that of modern medicine or psychology and mental health, predominantly it still has many of the characteristics of an emerging field. As such, there is very little consensus as to graduated competency requirements or how such competency is acquired. More established fields have prematurely cast judgment on these issues without fully understanding the depth of the field of hypnosis. Unfortunately, their competency model in regards to hypnotherapy is almost always severely lacking. Conversely, vested interests in other groups tend to be slow to evolve concepts lest their credibility get questioned. Thus they too often resist a wider approach to competency. Moreover, regulatory supervision of hypnotherapy by governments is likewise characterized by a lack of uniformity. This needs to change if society as a whole is to benefit. The International Hypnosis Research Institute has proposed a comprehensive solution by recommending a post-secondary curriculum for the hypnotherapy field. This is called the Clinical Hypnotherapy Academic Degree Program (CHADP). It is characterized by a three-degree program covering bachelors, masters, and doctorate. The first two levels include certified technicians with the masters level practitioner being holding a state-level mental health license.
