One in ten death row inmates are innocent. In Arizona and Texas, the execution capital of America, we hear from two inmates who have spent years awaiting the lethal injection for crimes they deny committing.
"There are plenty of people here who think if you're guilty of murder you should be taken out back and hung from the nearest tree", says Sara Kinney from the Houston Prosecutor's Office. Yet those sentenced to death cost the taxpayer 2 million dollars each, a far higher sum than life imprisonment. "You can hear people crying in the night here. It's difficult to watch people die over and over", says inmate Hank Skinner. For 19 years he has been held in isolation. Three years ago he was just 10 minutes away from execution when the Supreme Court said there was insufficient DNA evidence and delayed his sentence. "We have a system where you're supposed to be presumed innocent. When somebody gets charged here, they're presumed guilty", says lawyer Mike Kimerer.

Capital punishment, the death penalty, death sentence, or execution is a legal process whereby a person is put to death by the state as a punishment for a crime. Crimes that can result in a death penalty are known as capital crimes or capital offences. The term capital originates from the Latin capitalis, literally "regarding the head" (referring to execution by beheading).
Capital punishment has in the past been practised by most societies (one notable exception being Kievan Rus); currently only 58 nations actively practice it, and 97 countries have abolished it (the remainder have not used it for 10 years or allow it only in exceptional circumstances such as wartime). It is a matter of active controversy in various countries and states, and positions can vary within a single political ideology or cultural region. In the European Union member states, Article 2 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union prohibits the use of capital punishment.
Currently Amnesty International considers most countries abolitionist. The UN General Assembly has adopted, in 2007, 2008 and 2010, non-binding resolutions calling for a global moratorium on executions, with a view to eventual abolition. Although many nations have abolished capital punishment, over 60% of the world's population live in countries where executions take place, as the People's Republic of China, India, the United States of America and Indonesia, the four most-populous countries in the world, continue to apply the death penalty (although in India, Indonesia and many US states it is only used rarely). Each of these four nations voted against the General Assembly resolutions.

Christopher Eric Hitchens (13 April 1949 – 15 December 2011) was an English American author and journalist whose career spanned more than four decades. Hitchens, often referred to colloquially as "Hitch", was a columnist and literary critic for New Statesman, The Atlantic, The Nation, The Daily Mirror, The Times Literary Supplement and Vanity Fair. He was an author of twelve books and five collections of essays. As a staple of talk shows and lecture circuits, he was a prominent public intellectual, and his confrontational style of debate made him both a lauded and controversial figure.
Hitchens was known for his admiration of George Orwell, Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson, as well as for his excoriating critiques of various public figures including Mother Teresa, Bill Clinton, Henry Kissinger and Diana, Princess of Wales. Although he supported the Falklands War, his key split from the established political left began in 1989 after what he called the "tepid reaction" of the Western left to the Rushdie Affair. The September 11 attacks strengthened his internationalist embrace of an interventionist foreign policy, and his vociferous criticism of what he called "fascism with an Islamic face." His numerous editorials in support of the Iraq War caused some to label him a neoconservative, although Hitchens insisted he was not "a conservative of any kind", and his friend Ian McEwan describes him as representing the anti-totalitarian left.

George Denis Patrick Carlin (May 12, 1937 – June 22, 2008) was an American stand-up comedian, social critic, satirist, actor and writer/author, who won five Grammy Awards for his comedy albums.
Carlin was noted for his black humor as well as his thoughts on politics, the English language, psychology, religion, and various taboo subjects. Carlin and his "Seven Dirty Words" comedy routine were central to the 1978 U.S. Supreme Court case F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation, in which a narrow 5–4 decision by the justices affirmed the government's power to regulate indecent material on the public airwaves.
The first of his fourteen stand-up comedy specials for HBO was filmed in 1977. In 1988, the 1990s and 2000s, Carlin's routines focused on socio-cultural criticism of modern American society. He often commented on contemporary political issues in the United States and satirized the excesses of American culture. His final HBO special, It's Bad for Ya, was filmed less than four months before his death.

One in ten death row inmates are innocent. In Arizona and Texas, the execution capital of America, we hear from two inmates who have spent years awaiting the lethal injection for crimes they deny committing.
"There are plenty of people here who think if you're guilty of murder you should be taken out back and hung from the nearest tree", says Sara Kinney from the Houston Prosecutor's Office. Yet those sentenced to death cost the taxpayer 2 million dollars each, a far higher sum than life imprisonment. "You can hear people crying in the night here. It's difficult to watch people die over and over", says inmate Hank Skinner. For 19 years he has been held in isolation. Three years ago he was just 10 minutes away from execution when the Supreme Court said there was insufficient DNA evidence and delayed his sentence. "We have a system where you're supposed to be presumed innocent. When somebody gets charged here, they're presumed guilty", says lawyer Mike Kimerer.

Except his death sentence has been given a two year reprieve. Which almost always means 10-15 years in prison. Of course since as I have said, China executes a lot of people, most aren't so lucky. That's where prisoners of conscience and the illegal organ trade come into the picture.

5 Arguments Against The Death Penalty. The death penalty has always been controversial. Today we are "defending" both sides by bringing out 2 video's; one with arguments against the death penalty, one with arguments for it.
5. Deterrence
Scientific studies have consistently failed to demonstrate that executions deter people from committing crime anymore than long prison sentences. So there is no "fear-factor" which is often an important argument FOR the death penalty.
4. High Costs
Believe it or not but it costs far more to execute a person than to keep him or her in prison for life.
When one takes into account the cost of a jury trial and the mandatory appeals process to try, convict and execute someone in a capital case, these costs can reach millions of dollars, which is more than what it costs to keep someone in prison.
3. Inadequate Legal Representation
Perhaps the most important factor in determining whether a defendant will receive the death penalty is the quality of the representation he or she is provided. Sometimes the level of the representation is unacceptable and can literally get someone killed.
2. F*ck Ups
We are f*cking up. A bunch of botched execution cases made the news in the United States recently. We are somehow not able to properly end someones life. Torture is not allowed and although you may wish it on some of the criminals that end up in the chair, there is no legal justification for it.
