People clapping as they wait with coalition troops for food aid to be distributed STORYLINE: There were chaotic scenes in the town of Safwan in southern Iraq on Friday as desperate Iraqis struggled and fought for food from a supply convoy from neighbouring Kuwait. News reports said a convoy of five Kuwaiti Red Crescent trucks loaded with 45-thousand boxes of food had arrived in the Safwan area on Friday. While British troops looked on, two trucks of food were mobbed by hundreds of Iraqis, many of them young men who fought over the boxes of supplies as soon as the truck doors opened. Meantime, British and Australian divers, assisted by US Navy mine-detecting dolphins, are continuing to sweep a channel leading to the recently captured port of Umm Qasr. Two Iraqi mines were discovered in the channel earlier this week, leading to the postponement of a sea-borne relief operation. Ships carrying thousands of tons (tonnes) of food for distribution for civilians in southern Iraq are waiting to dock at the port. The Sir Galahad, a British Royal Navy ship loaded with humanitarian supplies, was able to reach port on Friday, after mine clearing operations paved the way for its arrival. Flanked by patrol boats and assault helicopters, Sir Galahad docked in the port of Umm Qasr Friday loaded with the first military shipment of relief aid for Iraqi citizens. Sir Galahad's precious cargo - about 300 tons (272 metric tons) of water and emergency rations of sugar, beans, and flour stacked - is the first massive shipment of aid to reach the country. Unlike the chaotic scenes in Safwan, aid distribution in Az Zubaya was a much calmer affair. The boxes of aid, enough for four thousand people, were unloaded without incident from the back of a truck. Residents clapped and cheered with troops from Blackwatch Regiment as they waited for food, water and medical supplies to be handed out. Meantime, a team from the 4CS medical regiment was busy tending to a baby girl who had been badly burned in a domestic incident. The young child was given immediate medical aid before being transported to a field hospital for further treatment.
