Reviving the marshlands in southern Iraq | Journal
More than half a million people once lived in southern Iraq's famous wetlands. When the Shiites rose up against Saddam Hussein in 1991, they took refuge there. The dictator ordered the draining of the marshes, robbing the Marsh Arabs of their livelihood and destroying a spectacularly rich ecosystem.

LEAD IN:
A severe drought is threatening Iraq's southern marshes.
The land is part of 8,000 square miles of wetlands fed by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and is thought to be the traditional site of the biblical Garden of Eden.
The region had just started to recover from Saddam Hussein's punitive draining of its lakes and swamps following the 1991 Gulf War.
STORYLINE:
Iraq's southern marshes are considered by many as the cradle of Western civilisation.
This land in the Hor al-Hammar marsh near Nasiriyah, 200 miles south of Baghdad was drained by Saddam Hussein after the Gulf War to punish the people who depended on it for survival.
The marshes were coming back to life a few years ago thanks to help from the United Nations.
Now they are once again little more than vast expanses of cracked earth.
The area's thousands of inhabitants, known as Marsh Arabs, are victims of the debilitating drought that has ravaged much of Iraq and neighbouring countries over the last two years.
''Our conditions have deteriorated more. I have bought this canoe which you see it now on dried marsh," says fisherman Yasir Razaq. " We asked our schoolchildren to leave schools, because we couldn't afford their expenses and buy them clothes. We don't have money or livestock. Now we don't have fish to sell or farms to cultivate. Our standard of living is deteriorated,'' he says.
The Marsh Arab culture has existed for more than 5,000 years in the 8,000 square miles of wetlands fed by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
The flooded, flat plain is said to have played an important role in the development of the agriculture-based culture that helped raise civilisation to new heights.
They boasted hundreds of species of birds and fish.
Periodic flooding created fertile farm lands.
The effect was devastating.

STORY LINE
The Marsh Arabs of southern Iraq have lived here for thousands of years - their way of life virtually unchanged.
But after a failed uprising against Saddam Hussein in 1991, a vast area of the wetlands - some 20,000 square kilometres (12,500 square miles) between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers - was drained on his orders.
Saddam spent millions of dollars to build dams and canals to halt the flow of the rivers into the marshes.
It was a form of ecological war designed to root out the fiercely independent Marsh Arabs that Saddam saw as a threat to his rule.
Only 10 percent of the original marshlands were left.
Hundreds of thousands of people who once lived in the marshes were displaced and many now live in deplorable conditions.
In Al Amara, 400 kilometres (250 miles) south east of Baghdad, more than nine thousand Marsh Arabs live in old abandoned, partially constructed factory buildings.
There's never been working a sewage system, and raw sewage runs throughout the area and collects in large ponds.
The children play barefoot, wading through the mud and sewage and there are no schools or health facilities.
But the humanitarian aid agency Mercy Corps is working to improve the living conditions of the slum by opening up access roads and doing the more urgent repairs in the old apartment buildings.
Today, after the fall of Saddam Hussein, Iraqi and coalition engineers have begun selective re-flooding of parts of Iraq's former marshlands.
But for some Marsh Arabs living in the Al Amara slums, it may already be too late.
The younger generation is growing up without learning essential skills such as fishing and farming, making a return to their centuries-old way of life, very difficult.

SUGGESTED INTRO:
Iraq's Marsh Arab community - historic opponents of the former regime - have lived through a nightmare.
Abandoned by the coalition after the first gulf war, Saddam almost completely drained their wetland home in an attempt to flush-out remnants of opposition.
Now the water is being allowed to return to the marshes - though very slowly.
As the waters rise again, nobody knows what will remain of their ancient culture.
SCRIPT:
0000 Water is slowly returning to the massive wetlands which were once a dominant feature in southern Iraq.
0008 Almost 13-thousand square miles of marshland was drained by Saddam - turned to desert - in an attempt to deny opposition fighters their hiding places.
0019 With only 10 percent of the marshes left to live in, the majority of Marsh Arabs were forced to find shelter in places like this - an abandoned factory complex which was only ever partially built.
0033 More than 9-thousand people now live here... their children have no choice but to play in mud and raw sewage.
0041 There are no health facilities here and no schools. Now it's difficult for aid agencies to help because of threats from the Iraqi resistance.
0053 So the people here largely help themselves. This is all they can hope for until their traditional homeland slowly floods.
0102 Only when they're surrounded by fresh water again - will children be able to learn fishing and farming skills.
Nobody knows how long that will take, or if the traditional way of life will now survive.
0113 Ends

0113 Ends

Legacy - The Origins of Civilization - Episode 1: Iraq, the Cradle Of Civilization (Documentary)
At best, this search for the continuing legacies of past civilizations can help explain how different cultures have developed over time, show how the past greatly influences all our lives, and cultivate a respect for other cultures. At worst, it can send a message that these civilizations have remained virtually unchanged through time, unlike the West, and cultivate a false view of other peoples as less "modern." The negative impact of the assumption that other cultures are not as modern as the West surfaces when Westerners make judgements, business deals, and policy decisions based on this assumption. Although Legacy aspires to the former objective, it often ends up fulfilling the latter. For example, the following statements by writer and presenter Michael Wood exemplify how the language Westerners often use to talk about non-Western peoples relegates them to a space and time outside of a Western view of the universe: "Two conceptions of civilization have fought for the soul of the peoples of the Americas, one foreign and recent, that of the West, the other ancient and native;" "For over 2000 years, China has been sustained by ideas virtually unchanged since the Bronze Age." Throughout the series, comments like the ones above and the relative absence of images of people creating and using modern technology make it difficult for viewers to see the integral roles non-Western peoples occupy in the present.
EPISODE 1: Iraq, the Cradle of Civilization
This episode explores the history of the world's first cities including Baghdad, Ur, Uruk, Erbil, and Sumer, and the development of law and science in this civilization born on the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates. Wood claims that the great tradition that produced the "pessimistic," "hard-bitten," and "resilient" people of Iraq can best be seen in the marsh Arabs and Mandeans, two groups whose "way of life has been preserved since long before civilization." He further asserts that "after all its achievements, Iraq reached the modern world as a society stopped in time." Oil and, later, the Gulf War (read: interaction with the West) caused profound changes in Iraq and brought them into the modern world. This static picture of Iraqi society is enhanced by the predominance of images of desolate landscapes and ancient settlements. There are few images which show Iraqis engaged in activity and creative processes, and the majority of these images show them dealing with the destruction caused by the Gulf War.
As in other episodes, one of Wood's main concerns is spirituality. There are several shots of Muslims praying and studying and the episode ends in a temple devoted to Satan. One may question whether his exploration of spirituality gives viewers a better appreciation of Iraqi society or reinforces notions of Iraqis as irrational, religious fundamentalists. While discussing the history of some of the world's oldest cities and how archaeology contributes to our knowledge of this history, Wood commits a serious archaeological faux pas; he picks up artifacts off the ground, explains their significance, and then walks away from the site with them in hand rather than putting them back where he found them. What message does this send to people who find artifacts while visiting sites?

Telecasted on 21-Feb-2013 on Khalijia Mubashira Channel in Sayyidaty programme.
Subject: The problem of Arabic's endangerment
Summary :
Time: Start to Break number 1
Question: Is Arabic language endagered?
"Yes it is, but not by foreign languages like English but by its native speakers. The reason is that there are multiple dialects of Arabic that are spoken across different geographies. Further, there are a group of local dialects that children hear at home 90% of the times. As a result, 'Arabic' in its true sense is accessible to them only at schools and for a short period of time."
"It maybe argued that English too has many dialects. But advantage English is it's official/formal standardization, unlike Arabic even in schools. For example, the Arabic taught at Al-Yasmina is distinctly different from Arabic taught at some other schools that you have been to.
Time: After Break number 1 to the end
Subject: Solution
Started off with a point about a Jordanian doctor.
"There is a fatwa that teaching of Arabic must be compulsory because it is compulsory to understand the Quran and Ahadith. And anything that is a pre-requisite to something that is compulsory must be compulsory.
Some references to Spain, France, Almania. Did not catch that entirely.
"There is a need of an International Committee/Organization to promote/standardize Arabic the way it has been done for European languages. Simultaneously, within the Arab world, in schools, conversation in Arabic must be promoted. e.g. At Ad-Dar, weekly one hour long sessions are held in which all conversation is to be carried out only in Arabic. Focusing on Arabic, however, does not mean neglecting other languages; rather it implies developing a holistic multi-lingual educational foundation from primary through secondary and higher secondary classes that would behoove students of Arab origin to be at par with students from the rest of the world where such a foundation is already being leveraged upon."

The Martian Official Trailer #1 (2015) - Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig Movie HD
During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.
