News is packaged information about current events happening somewhere else; or, alternatively, news is that which the news industry sells. News moves through many different media, based on word of mouth, printing, postal systems, broadcasting, and electronic communication. Common topics for news reports include war, politics, and business, as well as athletic contests, quirky or unusual events, and the doings of celebrities. Government proclamations, concerning royal ceremonies, laws, taxes, public health, and criminals, have been dubbed news since ancient times. Humans exhibit a nearly universal desire to learn and share news from elsewhere, which they satisfy by traveling and talking to each other. Technological and social developments, often driven by government communication and espionage networks, have increased the speed with which news can spread, as well as influenced its content. The genre of news as we know it today is closely associated with the newspaper, which originated in China as a court bulletin and spread, with paper and printing press, to Europe. The development of the electric telegraph in the mid-19th century revolutionized news by enabling nearly instantaneous transmissions, and by empowering a cartel of news agencies which consolidated the world news system. In the 20th century, the style of news and its impact on national populations expanded considerably with constant live broadcasting of radio and television, and finally, with the popularization of the internet.
Newsworthiness is defined as a subject having sufficient relevance to the public or a special audience to warrant press attention or coverage.[25]
In some countries and at some points in history, what news media and the public have considered "newsworthy" has met different definitions, such as the notion of news values.[26] However, many news values seem to be common across cultures. People seem to be interested in news to the extent which it has a big impact, describes conflicts, happens nearby, involves well-known people, and deviates from the norms of everyday happenings.[27] War is a common news topic, partly because it involves unknown events that could pose personal danger.

Shot, then blown to smithereens with military grade explosives, the 2006 killing of Altantuya Shaariibuu was one of Malaysia’s most sensational murder cases. Even though years have passed since the young Mongolian woman’s death, it is one case that has refused to disappear. If anything, the mystery has deepened.

The amazing mummified remains of a man apparently meditating in the lotus position have been unearthed in Mongolia.
A forensic examination is underway on the human relic which is believed to be around 200 years old, after being preserved in animal skin.
'The mummified body sits in a lotus position, as if still meditating,' said a report in The Siberian Times - citing Mongolian accounts of the discovery.
'Experts that only had time to carry basic visual test say they believe the body can be about 200 years old.'
The body was found on 27 January in Songinokhairkhan province, said Mongolia's 'Morning Newspaper'. It was covered in 'cattle skin'.
The human remains are now undergoing forensic examination in capital Ulaanbataar.
Initial speculation is that the mummy could be a teacher of Lama Dashi-Dorzho Itigilov.
Dashi-Dorzho Itigilov, born in 1852, was a Buryat Buddhist Lama of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, best known for the lifelike state of his body.
His remains were reported not to be subject to macroscopic decay.

Modern Nomads (1996): Watch how capitalism has helped raise the incomes of Mongolian nomads
A look at how Mongolia's new capitalism has prompted a nomadic revival.
On the grasslands, it's time to brand the wild ponies. Nomadic farmer, Jamts, is marking out his property. In post-communist Mongolia, nomads are once again permitted to own their own livestock. Inside their traditional ger tent, Jamts' wife, Dorj, prepares the day's fresh milk and cream. With skilful management of their resources, Jamts and Dorj have brought up 13 children. But as Mongolia heads for full blown capitalism, nomads now battle with powerful market forces. Jamts has thrived where many have failed because his enterprising nephew, Mendsaikhan, helps him sell produce in the city. Mendsaikhan takes Jamts' adult daughter, Pagma, back home for a visit. Far away from city nightclubs and medical student life, Pagma falls back into the nomadic routine. Haggling at the market, Mendsaikhan gets a good price for his uncle's sheepskins. Traders like he and Jamts can provide Mongolia's stumbling economy with much needed income. But government advisers believe that the nomadic lifestyle will inevitably collide with economic reform.

Gearing up for the good times in Ulaanbaatar | Business
Mongolia's economy was booming just a few years ago, but is now in the dumps due to the sharp drop in mineral resource prices across the globe. Mining forms 30 percent of the Asia country's economy. GDP growth has dwindled from an eye-watering 17 and a half percent in 2012, to a pace of only 3 percent in the first half of this year. But the bad times may be coming to an end.

MCA-Mongolia is the entity established by the Government of Mongolia to implement the $285 million grant program funded by Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).
In October 2007 an agreement was signed between the Mongolian and US governments for a five years, nearly USD 285 million 'Compact' for Mongolia to reduce poverty through economic growth, and targeting six sectors of society: property rights, per-urban rangeland, vocational education, health, Road, and energy efficiency. The Compact Program is a US Government grant.
The Program is expected to have a significant direct impact on individuals living in poverty, and significant indirect and ancillary benefits by creating new economic opportunities and increasing the capacity of individuals and groups to participate fully in and benefit from economic growth.

PM Modi Ji Welcome Mongolia, Naadam Festival,Mongolian Horse Riding,Mongolian Wrestling highlights
India will extend a $1-billion credit line to mineral-rich Mongolia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in Ulan Bator on Sunday, amid a host of agreements in trade and defence as New Delhi tried to strengthen its influence in China’s backyard.
Modi and Mongolian Prime Minister Chimed Saikhanbileg upgraded ties to a “strategic partnership” – a year after a similar agreement between Mongolia and China – with New Delhi asking the land-locked country to partner in its economic transformation while vowing to step up bilateral trade and investment.
"The two Prime Ministers agreed to encourage development of equal and mutually beneficial trade, investment and economic cooperation, which is balanced, sustainable, and leads to prosperity in both countries," a joint statement said.
The PM and Saikhanbileg, who attended the traditional Mongolian Mini Naadam festival together, also noted intensified cooperation in civil nuclear domain, such as societal and industrial applications of radioisotopes, exploration and mining of radioactive minerals in Mongolia, and human resource development.
Dressed in traditional Mongolian costume, topped with a sola hat, Modi said he hoped his visit – a first by an Indian PM -- would usher in closer economic ties with both leaders agreeing to encourage Indian companies to explore opportunities in Mongolia's mining sector through joint ventures and investment.
The PM, who also shot an arrow from a traditional bow and was gifted a Mongolian horse, is on the second-leg of a three-nation Asian tour.
"Mongolia is also an integral part of India's Act East Policy. The destinies of India and Mongolia are closely linked with the future of Asia Pacific region. We can work together to help advance peace, stability and prosperity in this region." Modi said, calling the central Asian nation the new bright light of democracy in the world.
The PM and Saikhanbileg also watched wrestling, archery and horse riding at the Chingisiin Khuree Camp, 25 km from capital Ulan Bator.
Mongolia's economy -- fuelled by a mining boom that led to high rates of growth, peaking at 17.5 percent in 2011-- depends largely on trade with China. Yet it remains wary of China's economic dominance, which has prompted a rise in protectionist government policies and resource nationalism in the country of three million people.
Mongolia has also sought to strengthen relations with Japan and has maintained trading ties with neighbouring Russia, hosting President Vladimir Putin last year.
Infrastructure development in the central Asian nation has been hit by a slowing Chinese coal market and the Indian loan may primarily be used to fund an unfinished rail link from its coal mines in the Gobi desert to overcome bottlenecks in deliveries.
"India will continue to support Mongolia's endeavour to create a business friendly foreign investment regime," it said.
Officials also signed 14 agreements in areas such as policing and surveillance, air services, cyber security, renewable energy and civil nuclear regimes, with New Delhi gifting Ulan Bator with an indigenous cancer treatment machine.
"It is a special privilege to come on the occasion of two important milestones that unite us – 25 years of democracy in Mongolia and 60 years of diplomatic relations between our two nations. We have strong convergence of views on bilateral relations and our regional and international partnership," Modi said.
He later addressed the State Great Hural, the Mongolian Parliament, which was specially convened today on a holiday for the first time for a foreign leader, before visiting a monastery and posting a trademark selfie with Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj on Twitter

Wonderful traditional Mongolian performance by a young dancer at Tibet House (NYC) opening reception for this contemporary Mongolian art exhibit: "Mongol Visions: Winged Horses and Shamanic Skies."
More from the website about the event and show:
"For more than two thousand years the Mongols have dominated the center of the Silk Road. Here, under the guidance of the great Khaans like Genghis and Kublai, the ancient traditions of shamanism and Indo-Tibetan Buddhism merged into a profound stream. The vast influence of Mongolia on Euro-Asian civilization is only now being fully appreciated.
"Tibet House is delighted to join in the celebration of this inspiring and magical legacy by hosting an exhibition with some of Mongolia's greatest young artists whose works bring together the integrity of tradition and the creative impulse of the contemporary aesthetic.
"These celebrated artists include Gankhuyag Natsag, whose paintings, statues and traditional lama dance masks have shown in more than a dozen cities around the world; D. Soyolmaa, renowned for bringing the clarity and precision of traditional Buddhist art into a contemporary ambiance; T. Nurmaa, famed for her ability to capture on canvas the radiance and raw intensity of the Mongolian spirit; D. Bulgantuya, an acclaimed artist who has received rave reviews in Sofia, Budapest, Warsaw, Kiev, and Vienna; and Ts. Bolor, especially known for her "aesthetics of the feminine."

My sister told me that I HAD TO check out Mongolian Throat Singing when I was in Mongolia. I had no idea what to expect. What I found was a strong form of music, an unbelievable use of the vocal chords to create sound vibrations. You could literally feel them in your chest!
Mongolia is a vast, empty space - the least densely populated place in the world. And yet this music is so full, deep and rich. It is haunting hearing it boom out into the nothingness.

This is throat singing. I know there are going to be people arguing in the comments about this being Mongolian culture "this is Khöömei", or this is Tuvan, this is Inuit Throat singing. To a certain degree they are all correct, because the Mongolians, Alaskan Natives and Tuva are all related, ethnically and culturally. They just got really spread out a long time ago.
here is some information below about "Eskimos" although being an Alaskan Native myself I find the term somewhat offensive, albeit the most commonly known word for my people.
The Eskimos are the most widely dispersed group in the world still leading a partly aboriginal way of life. They live in a region that spans more than 3,500 miles, including Greenland, the northern fringe of North America, and a sector of eastern Siberia.
Eskimos are racially distinct from American Indians, and are not, as previously believed, merely “Indians transformed.” In fact, the Eskimos are most closely related to the Mongolian peoples of eastern Asia. Eskimos consider themselves to be “Inuit” (The People). The Eskimo-Aleut languages are unrelated to any American Indian language groups.
The Eskimo population was approximately 50,000 at the time of the first widespread contact with Europeans. An estimated 2,000 Siberian Eskimos lived near the Bering Strait, the Alaskan Eskimos numbered about 25,000, and the Central Eskimos (who inhabited what is now northern Canada) numbered about 10,000. The Labrador Eskimos totaled about 3,000, while the Greenland Eskimos totaled about 10,000.
The popular conception of the Eskimos—whale hunters dressed in heavy fur clothing and living in dome-shaped ice lodges—is derived from the Eskimos who live farthest north, on the Arctic islands of Canada and along northwestern Greenland. In reality, these northern Arctic dwellers formed a minority among Eskimos as a whole. No single environmental adaptation existed throughout the area of Eskimo occupancy. Eskimos along the Pacific coast probably obtained much of their food by fishing for salmon, while the Central Eskimos of Canada subsisted mainly on caribou. Eskimo groups lived in various types of shelters, including semi-subterranean sod houses and tents made of caribou skins.
At no time did the Eskimos possess a national or even well-defined tribal sense. The emphasis was on the local and familial group rather than on associations of land and territory.
The overall Eskimo population has remained fairly constant over the past several centuries, although not all groups have remained stable in number. According to the 1990 census, there are 57,152 Eskimos and 23,797 Aleuts living in the United States.

Another from the VHS archive.
UNESCO organized the Nomads’ Route Expedition in Mongolia in summer 1992, which composed of an international team of 44 foreign experts, 11 Mongol specialists and 28 representatives of the press, from some 25 countries in all, travelled the 3,500 kilometres of dust or grass tracks that separate Khovd, in the West,from Ulanbaatar, in the East. In order to highlight the difficulties involved in nomadic life, an international seminar was held at the end of the Expedition in Ulan Bator (3-5 August 1992,) on the theme "The Nomads of Central Asia and the Silk Roads".
Mongolia is the only steppe nation where such a large number of people still lead a nomadic existence and practice a culture particularly suited to a mobile way of life. Although sheep provide a lot of their needs: skins for clothing, mutton, milk and cheese for food; dung for fuel; and wool for the manufacture of the characteristic felt gers, or yurts (the nomads’mobile homes), most Mongolian nomads also possess large herds of horses, camels, goats and in the high regions, yaks.
During the Expedition, participants were able to experience some of the difficulties of nomadic life, due, amongst other things, to the harsh and very rapidly changing climate.
They were also able to see some of the more pleasant aspects, such as the traditional arts, crafts and games, knowledge of which has been passed down from generation to generation , like Mongolian wrestling, archery, horse riding as well as a great deal of music, and particularly the famous Altay "khoomii" singing.
One of the important outcomes of this Expedition was the creation, in Ulan Bator in September 1998, of the International Institute for the Study of Nomadic Civilizations (website: http://www.nomadic.mn ).

Travel video about destination Mongolia.
Mongolia is a land between sky, steppes and desert. Extreme, exotic, and mostly undiscovered, home to nomads, ringers, eagle hunters and horsemen. A land of adventure!Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia and is a metropolis set amid the steppes, truly the pulsating heart of the country that combines the cultures of old with a lively feeling of moving towards new horizons. Ganden Hyid is a pilgrimage destination for the faithful from all over Mongolia. They pray and wind prayer mills and crowd into the main sanctuary. In the monastery’s main temple is a twenty six metre high statue of the Buddha Of Mercy, patron saint of Mongolia that is decorated with gold and gems. Almost fifty kilometres east of Ulaanbaatar is a leisure area for the inhabitants of the city, the Terej National Park. Here horse riding is available across country and without limit, a fact that pleases the basic instincts of the Mongolian heart. In Kharkhorin, former residence of those who once ruled Mongolia, today there is little left to see. However, a few mysterious sites remain which, along with the Erdene Zuu Monastery, are highly evocative of this ancient city in Central Mongolia as for thirty two years it was the centre of one of the most powerful empires on Earth. The Magic of Mongolia can be felt by all who come here and this journey across a harsh and contrasting land has been an unforgettable adventure beyond compare.

China is a huge country in Eastern Asia (about the same size as the United States of America) with the world's largest population.
With coasts on the East China Sea, Korea Bay, Yellow Sea, and South China Sea, in total it borders 14 nations. It borders Afghanistan, Pakistan (through the disputed territory of Kashmir), India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam to the south; Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan to the west; Russia and Mongolia to the north and North Korea to the east. This number of neighbouring states is equalled only by China's vast neighbour to the north, Russia.
This article only covers mainland China. For Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, please see separate articles.
See in China
===========
China's attractions are endless and you will never run out of things to see. Especially near the coastal areas, if you run out of things to see in one city, the next one is usually just a short train ride away.
Whether you are a history buff, a nature lover or someone who just wants to relax on a nice beach, China has it all from the majestic Forbidden City in Beijing, to the breathtaking scenery of Jiuzhaigou. Even if you live in China for many years, you'll find that there's always something new to discover in another part of the country. Perhaps unsurprising due to its sheer size and long history, China has the third largest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, after Italy and Spain.
Karst Scenery
=============
The gumdrop mountains and steeply sloping forested hills with bizarre rock formations favored by traditional Chinese artists are not creative fantasy. In fact, much of southern and southwestern China is covered in strangely eroded rock formations known as Karst. Karst is type of limestone formation named after an area in Slovenia. As limestone layers erode, the denser rock or pockets of different stone resist erosion forming peaks. Caves hollow out beneath the mountains which can collapse forming sinkholes and channels leading to underground rivers. At its most unusual Karst erodes to form mazes of pinnacles, arches and passageways. The most famous example can be found in the Stone Forest (石林 Shílín) near Kunming in Yunnan. Some of the most famous tourist areas in China feature spectacular karst landscapes — Guilin and Yangshuo in Guangxi, and much of central and western Guizhou province.
Sacred sites
==========
Several sites in China have famous Buddhist art:
Yungang Grottoes in Shanxi Province - more than 51,000 Buddhist carvings, dating back 1,500 years, in the recesses and caves of the Yangang Valley mountainsides
Mogao Caves in Gansu province - art and manuscripts dating back to the 4th century
Dazu Rock Carvings near Chongqing - dating from the 7-13th century
Longmen Grottoes near Luoyang - 5-10th century
Mountains
========
The Five Great Mountains (五岳 wǔyuè), associated with Taoism:
Mount Tai (泰山), Shandong Province (1,545 meters)
Mount Hua (华山), Shaanxi Province (2,054 meters)
Mount Heng (Hunan) (衡山), Hunan Province (1,290 meters)
Mount Heng (Shanxi) (恒山), Shanxi Province (2,017 meters)
Mount Song (嵩山), Henan Province, where the famous Shaolin Temple (少林寺) is located (1,494 meters)
The Four Sacred Mountains (四大佛教名山 sìdà fójiào míngshān), associated with Buddhism:
Mount Emei (峨嵋山), Sichuan Province (3,099 meters)
Mount Jiuhua (九华山), Anhui Province (1,342 meters)
Mount Putuo (普陀山), Zhejiang Province (297 meters, an island)
Mount Wutai (五台山), Shanxi Province (3,058 meters)
The three main sacred mountains of Tibetan Buddhism:
========
Mount Kailash, Tibet (5,656 meters), also known as Gang Rinpoche in Tibetan, also one of Hinduism's holiest mountains visited by many Hindu pilgrims
Kawa Karpo
Amnye Machen
Itineraries
=========
Some itineraries cover trips that are entirely within China:
Two weeks to a month in China
A week near Hong Kong
Along the Yangtze river
Along the Yellow river
Along the Grand Canal
Yunnan tourist trail
Overland to Tibet
Long March
Others are partly in China:
====================
Europe to South Asia over land
Silk Road - ancient caravan route from China to Europe
Karakoram Highway - Western China to Pakistan through the Himalayas
On the trail of Marco Polo
Overland Kunming to Hong Kong

Travel video about destination Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia.
Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia, a metropolis that is the pulsating heart of the country and combines the cultures of old with a lively feeling of stepping forward to new horizons. The spiritual centre of Mongolia once lay directly on the Peking -Irkutsk trading route, thus it became an important centre of trade. At that time the city was called ‘Urgöö’ and life was determined by the region’s monasteries and lamas. Subsequently, Chinese traders and workers, Russians - and even Europeans - settled in this area. Ganden Hyid is a pilgrimage destination for the faithful from all over Mongolia. They pray, and wind prayer mills and crowd into the main sanctuary. In the monastery’s main temple is a twenty six metre high statue, the Buddha Of Mercy, patron saint of Mongolia, that weighs twenty tons and is decorated with gold and gems. Almost fifty kilometres east of Ulaanbaatar is a leisure area for the inhabitants of the city, the Terej National Park, in which amid fine and protected nature, visitors can do what each Mongolian can do best - ride – across country and without limit! In Ulaanbaatar, the Nadaam Festival begins where virtuoso throat singers and horse headed fiddlers set the contestants in the right mood and a typical snake woman from Mongolia’s state circus school performs amazing acrobatic contortions. This has been an amazing visit to an exotic and little known world. And this capital city, with all of its incredible contrasts, seems almost unreal. But Ulaanbaatar is very much ‘here, now and heading for the future’!

Travel video about destination Trans Siberian Railroad in Siberia.
The most beautiful section of the Trans Siberian Railroad travels from Irkutsk in Siberia to the massive Lake Baikal. It takes in Ulan Ude as well as the border town of Nauschki and terminates at the Mongolian capital of Ulaan Baatar. Varied landscapes and exotic towns turn this journey into a fascinating adventure.Travelling from Moscow, and after a total of three days and more than five thousand kilometres on the train, we disembark at Irkutsk, the most beautiful city in Siberia. The city became home of the Dekrabisten who fought for liberty in the former Tsarist empire and were eventually banished to Siberia where they introduced their own culture. In Port Baikal is the remarkable and modern Circum-Baikal train that takes a full day to travel around Lake Baikal. Ulan Ude is an exotic city with a population of a million and for the first time we get a feeling of being in Asia. However, the largest head of Lenin in the world emphasises the region’s association with Mother Russia. In 1666 a winter fortress was built on the Uda River by Russian Cossacks who were travelling east, the Verchneundinsk Fortress. Ulaan Baatar: the station is very quiet. Under the severe stare of the female train guards, passengers leave the train and the luggage is unloaded. The Trans Siberian Railroad is still the longest railway line in the world and connects the continents of Europe and Asia. It is truly a technical miracle and a legend that has survived the passage of time.
