There has been a historic ruling in Northern Ireland regarding the country’s ban on abortion. A judge decided that denying women access to abortion is a violation of their human rights. Ana Kasparian (The Point) and John Iadarola (Think Tank) hosts of The Young Turks discuss.

“A high court judge has ruled that Northern Ireland’s almost outright ban on abortion breaches the human rights of women and girls, including rape victims.
The historic judgment, delivered in Belfast on Monday, could lead to women and girls who are the victims of rape and incest as well those suffering from fatal foetal abnormalities having terminations in Northern Irish hospitals.
The Royal College of Midwives has welcomed the landmark judgement in Belfast High Court. Breedagh Hughes, the RCM’s Northern Ireland Director, said it would give some legal protection for all health professionals faced with the possibility of carrying out terminations in local hospitals
Hughes said: “Today’s ruling is extremely welcome. It now gives midwives and other health professionals legal protection and a release from the fear of prosecution. This will enable midwives to offer women who have a diagnosis of fatal foetal anomaly the appropriate care, support and advice that they also have often been denied because of the Assembly’s inertia.”

"We thought we were going to attend a UN meeting and we witnessed a racist hate fest instead". Anti-Semitic slogans, flyers praising Hitler to come back from the dead, fundamentalist propaganda... These are images that have haunted many NGOs since the 2001 Durban Conference in South Africa. It all happened a week before 9/11... As the United States waged war against terrorism and deserted UN regulations, Asian and African states took hold of the majority in the new Human Rights Council created in 2006. For the first time, a documentary says what is going on in Geneva’s UN premises. It is explaining what became of the 1948 Universal Declaration on Human Rights. What we discover there seems very far from the miraculous consensus orchestrated by Eleanor Roosevelt 60 years ago. Nowadays, the Council hosts a direct confrontation between two visions of the world. Dictatorships and authoritarian states give lessons to the few democracies present in the Assembly. As Robert Badinter - the father of death penalty’s abolition in France - puts it: "the question of human rights once more became an ideological battlefield". Words become crushing weapons in this new Assembly. Should we forbid the defamation of religions in order to combat racism at an international level? Or does it constitute a regression when it hides discriminations made in the name of religion in certain countries? This is a very sensitive issue on the eve of the Second Durban Conference: America and European countries threaten to boycott the process...

The Human Rights Act enshrines rights British people fought for centuries, and now the Tories have pledged to scrap it. The politicians are trying to take your rights away, and much of the media have been cheering them on and spreading myths and lies. So here I take on some of the most common myths surrounding the Human Rights Act and explain why it's so important - and why we all need us to stand up and protect it.

Climate change is unfair. While rich countries can fight against rising oceans and dying farm fields, poor people around the world are already having their lives upended — and their human rights threatened — by killer storms, starvation and the loss of their own lands. Transcript:
The world was deeply saddened by recent attacks in Paris where terrorists killed 129 innocent people and wounded 352 more. ISIS has claimed responsibility. The French government has responded by declaring a state of emergency at home.
A state of emergency will be declared throughout the country. And has increased its bombing of ISIS held territory abroad.
ISIS provided two main reasons for the attack. One was a response to the ongoing French bombings and military involvement in West Asia. Evidenced by ISIS's warning or more attacks if the French government continues it's "Crusader Campaign". Another was a hatred of Western values. Evidence by ISIS declaring Paris the capital of prostitution and vice.
The question now is what affect the attack will have on French policy. Civil liberties are already being curbed, the state of emergency allows Warrantless Searches, Curfews and Control of the Press. Free movement in and out of France by EU residents under the EUs open borders policy will also likely end.
In their response to the attacks, French officials should consider the advice of economist Frederick Hayek who argued that principles should trump the temptation to hastily do something when responding to national emergencies. Otherwise, we've risked undermining the very principles of a free society that we fight so hard to protect.
