Kristal had one demand of the acts he booked; they could only play original music. No top 40's, no covers. It was the credo he lived by, support the artist at whatever the cost. Hilly Kristal ironically became known as the godfather of punk giving a chance to such bands as Blondie, Television, Ramones, Talking Heads, Dead Boys and The Police.

Genres:

Taglines: Pledge allegiance. Life's a drag. Based On The New York Times Best-Selling Book! Young and depressed in America
Quotes:
[opening narration]::Elizabeth: Back, back, back. How fucking far back do you go? My mom and dad were divorced before I was two, and from that on my father was almost uninvolved in my life, and my mother much too involved. She wanted to make up for all her mistakes through me.
Elizabeth: One night there was something in my pants, like blood. My mom said, oh, hell, your period. This is where all the trouble starts. She was right.
Elizabeth: Now mom and dad really had something to fight over: me. Then one day my dad disappeared. No numbers, no letters - just gone. I wrote to seventeen magazine, a long letter about us. They wanted to publish it as an article, but kept asking, your dad going away, does he come back? Does it have a happy ending? In reality it didn't, but I thought, what the hell, I'll give them what they want.
Mrs. Wurtzel: Come on, this is the most important day of your life!::Elizabeth: I thought that's when you get married.::Mrs. Wurtzel: Huh, no honey, that's the worst day of your life.
Mrs. Wurtzel: [on the phone] Mom, she looks beautiful.::Elizabeth: Pity, I was aiming for psychotic.
Elizabeth: Ever since I was a little kid, my mum and I hang out together. I didn't fit in with most kids at schools. They thought I was strange, so they made me feel like a stranger. And my mother took advantage of it from an early age, throwing me into plays, spelling bees, studying, writing, museums, concerts, and even more writing. She convinced me this would lead to the Holy Grail: Harvard. A place where I would finally be surrounded by people I had something in common with.
Elizabeth: [to Ruby] We'll be like this beautiful literary freaks. Being brilliant, and dark. Sexy. [both laugh]::Elizabeth: [to herself] Trouble is, I'm deadly serious.
Elizabeth: He told me afterwards in terms of absolute value, sex and drugs were equally meaningless to him. Just two different ways to have fun. Which is all well and good, until a girl tries out the same approach.
Elizabeth: You know, if you're going to suggest therapy, don't. I'm living proof it doesn't work.
Elizabeth: You don't understand. You don't understand, it was an accident.::Ruby: An accident? You call that a fucking accident?::Elizabeth: It was, uh, it was sort of, you know...::Ruby: Come on, what?::Elizabeth: An accidental blowjob?

Lewis Allan "Lou" Reed (born March 2, 1942) is an American rock musician, songwriter, and photographer.[1] He is best known as guitarist, vocalist, and principal songwriter of The Velvet Underground, and for his solo career, which has spanned several decades. Though the Velvet Underground were a commercial failure in the late 1960s, the group has gained a considerable cult following in the years since its demise and has gone on to become one of the most widely cited and influential bands of the era.[2] As the Velvet Underground's principal songwriter, Reed wrote about subjects of personal experience that rarely had been examined so openly in rock and roll, including sexuality and drug culture.
After his departure from the group, Reed began a solo career in 1971. He had a hit the following year with "Walk on the Wild Side", although he subsequently lacked the mainstream commercial success its chart status seemed to indicate.[3] Reed's work as a solo artist frustrated critics wishing for a return of the Velvet Underground. In 1975, Reed released a double album of feedback loops, Metal Machine Music, upon which he later commented, "No one is supposed to be able to do a thing like that and survive."[4]
In 2008, Reed married performance artist Laurie Anderson.[5] - Wikipedia

Lou Reed Remembered
Documental BBC. Primera emisión: 15 Diciembre 2013
Film tribute to Lou Reed, who died in October, which looks at the extraordinarily transgressive life and career of one of rock 'n' roll's true originals
With the help of friends, fellow musicians, critics and those who have been inspired not only by his music but also by his famously contrary approach to almost everything, the documentary looks at how Reed not only helped to shape a generation but also helped to create a truly alternative, independent rock scene, while also providing New York with its most provocative and potent soundtrack.
With contributions from Bob Ezrin, Mick Rock, Lenny Kaye, Paul Auster, Moe Tucker, Boy George, Thurston Moore, Andrew Wylie, Victor Bockris, Holly Woodlawn, Mary Woronov and Steve Hunter.

Unique on Youtube and UNSEEN for 40 years, we see American Musician and Native New Yorker Lou Reed has just arrived in Australia for the first time August 19, 1974 and at this Press Conference we see Lou Reed like a Maestro in total control which sometimes leaves the Australian Reporters rather miffed at this man, someone no doubt like they've never met before! This also includes LIVE performances at the Hordern Pavillion in Sydney of Walk on the Wild Side and Rock 'n Roll both later would become Classic's in the Music catalogue of the now late Mr. Lou Reed.
At 1:03 in this video you'll see a young woman wearing a Lou Reed "Transformer" sweater, this work was created by Mary Adams, an amazingly talented Artist who's works of Lou Reed amongst others like (Patti Smith,Blondie) were just recently near where I live so I went and saw her and her incredible works of Art and will at some point edit my interview with Mary who's talent and skill has without a doubt reached a *Masters Status since 1974, she tells the story behind this in my interview with her so I 'll leave it here for now.

Movie about Lou Reed's seminal glam-rock solo album, Transformer, featuring a relaxed Reed (though decidedly less glam than he was in '72) looking like he's having the time of his life as he reminisces and isolates separate tracks to illustrate how the album came together. Bassist Herbie Flowers demonstrates how he recorded the swingy, impossibly catchy bass riff in "Walk on the Wild Side," and coproducer David Bowie makes a brief appearance, as do many of Reed's contemporaries and fellow musicians. Many express delight that the tracks sound as fresh as they did when they were recorded, especially "Vicious" and "Perfect Day."
Find extras here: http://youtu.be/THH_sfyLBUk
Bonus interviews include a fascinating tale from Reed on how he first met Andy Warhol--while he and the Velvet Underground were playing in a seedy Village café, being attacked by drunken sailors offended by one of their songs.

Lou Reed's 1984 solo album New Sensations presented in a non-modified recording of RCA AFL 1-4998 vinyl LP. All efforts were made to realistically reproduce the natural vinyl stereo LP sound, so record levels were restrained and album noise is present.
Side A:
1.) 0:00 I Love You, Suzanne
2.) 3:15 Endlessly Jealous
3.) 7:14 My Red Joystick
4.) 10:49 Turn To Me
5.) 15:17 New Sensations
Side B:
1.) 20:51 Doin' The Things That We Want To
2.) 24:48 What Becomes A Legend Most
3.) 28:27 Fly Into The Sun
4.) 31:35 My Friend George
5.) 35:34 High In The City
6.) 38:59 Down At The Arcade
Realize, all of my vinyl LPs are 20 to 37 years old. Recorded from antique source equipment. Album noise is naturally highest at the beginning and end of each album side. Hope you enjoy my posts. Lou's fantastic 1992 full concert where he featured the complete "Magic & Loss" powerful concept album along with great versions of Velvet/solo tracks. A phenomenal live performance with Mike Rathke, Rob Wasserman, Tony Blair and Jimmy Scott! "What's Good", "Warrior King" and some other stellar cuts make up this story about how cancer affected his friends and the impact of their cancer on himself.
I do not own the rights to this and will gladly take down if asked, but this release is long out of print and never released on DVD.

On the live album Rock N Roll Animal, Lou Reed showed he'd learned how to give his audience what they wanted, and do it well. Sally Can't Dance, on the other hand, was the polar opposite, a remarkably cynical album that pandered to the lowest common denominator of the market that had bought Transformer and Rock N Roll Animal, and didn't even do it with much flair. Reed's performances here are limited to vocals, except for some sloppy acoustic guitar on one track (this from the man who helped reinvent electric guitar with the Velvet Underground), and the sodden, overblown arrangements sink most of these tunes before they get past the first chorus; much of the time, Reed sounds like an afterthought on his own album. And while Reed's best songwriting ranks with the best rock of his generation, Sally Can't Dance is cluttered with throwaways that reach for the boho decadence of Transformer and come up empty (with special recognition going to the bizarre and truly puzzling "Animal Language"). Side two does offer two worthwhile songs: "Kill Your Sons," a powerful and deeply personal remembrance of Reed's bouts with shock treatment and brutal psychotherapy, which he would revisit in a much stronger performance on 1984's Live in Italy, and "Billy," a witty and surprisingly poignant remembrance of an old friend and how their paths in life diverged. But otherwise, Sally Can't Dance has the distinction of being the worst studio album of Reed's career; Metal Machine Music may have been a lot more annoying, but at least he was trying on that one.

"Lou" Reed (March 2, 1942 – October 27, 2013) was an American musician, singer, and songwriter. After serving as guitarist, vocalist, and principal songwriter of the Velvet Underground, his solo career spanned several decades.
The Velvet Underground was a commercial failure in the late 1960s, but the group gained a considerable cult following in the years since its demise and has gone on to become one of the most widely cited and influential bands of the era.Brian Eno famously stated that, while the Velvet Underground's debut album only sold 30,000 copies, "everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band."
After his departure from the group, Reed began a solo career in 1972. He had a hit the following year with "Walk on the Wild Side", but this level of mainstream commercial success was not to be repeated.Reed was known for his distinctive deadpan voice, poetic lyrics and for pioneering and coining the term ostrich guitar tuning.
In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time included two albums by Reed as a solo artist, Transformer and Berlin.

Lou Reed. Lou Reed. Here we bring you a rarely heard interview Lou recored in 1987. It's vintage Lou. Salty and sweet. Earnest and cocky. Grouchy and kind of endearing. Reed (and his legendary band The Velvet Underground) were those musicians who never got the extensive accolades or awards--nor the riches many of their contemporaries found. Yet he never seemed to waver in his search for the perfect sound and his quest "to elevate the rock and roll song and take it where it hadn’t been taken before." Here we present some interview outtakes that give a taste for this iconic American musician. Lou Reed died of liver disease on October 27, 2013. He was 71.
In this animated film Lou Reed talks about chasing off nosy college kids on his porch with his shotgun, how he dreamed about writing the great American novel while at Syracuse University, "how savage the reaction against" the Velvet Underground was, the intention of taking books and putting them into songs, writing rock and roll you could grow old with, not thinking The Doors or the Beatles were up to the level of his band, and how he hoped to elevate the rock and roll song to where it hadn't been before.
RIP, Lou.
LOU REED QUOTES
"What we had was ambition and a goal ... to elevate the rock and roll song and take it where it hadn’t been taken before."
"I have faith in my own vision, and didn’t want them to tamper with it."
"Don’t thin my voice out and make it like that high shit. This is the way I sound."
" I’ve gone out with my shotgun. This is hunting country out there. You better run."
"I wanted to write the great American novel but I also loved rock and roll."
"I got a little puzzled at how savage the reaction against us was."

[Mono] This is an interview that was done on a late night USTV program, on which numerous live performances were captured, way back in the 70s and 80s. There is no music during this interview; just penetrating conversation, so to speak.
The recording date is sometime between the release of "Street Hassle" and "Take No Prisoners" - both, incredible listening choices, if you'd ask me.
I had shared this once before, and Mr. Reed was kind enough to link that previous posting to his website, before his unfortunate passing away.
It is time to put it up here again, because it is such a great little interview.
Apologies for the tracking error, which affects the picture slightly, at times, but the videotape was on its last legs. The audio portion of the interview is not affected, however.
