What is biodiversity and why is it important?
Biodiversity is the term used to encompass the variety of all living organisms on Earth, including their genetic diversity, species diversity and the diversity of marine, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, together with their associated evolutionary and ecological processes. But as biodiversity is also a human concept, different people bring their own set of values to bear on it. Dr Steve Morton talks about the different values that humans obtain from biodiversity and the role we will need to play in shaping its future. (07:51)

Drift analysis undertaken by the CSIRO. This material supports that the debris from MH370 may be found as far west of the search area as La Réunion Island and is consistent with the currently defined Search area.
Blue, black and red dots simulate items with leeway factors (applied to the 10m wind velocity) of 1.2, 1.5 and 1.8%. The items originated along the black arc (7th arc) on 8 March 2014. White arrows are the winds for the day shown. Magenta symbols are positions of real drifting buoys (with sea-anchors at 12m) on the day. Their movement has been used to estimate the errors of the ocean current component of the total drift velocity.

Clearing explosives is a major operation and removing the deadly residue of over a century of warfare is a never ending task. The problem is that before you can remove explosives you have to find them. That isn’t always easy – especially underwater, so Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) has developed a new sensor that uses high-temperature planar gradiometers to seek out explosives in the sea.
The CSIRO sensor (Image: CSIRO) Two versions of a gradiometer chip (CSIRO) Planar gradiometer schematic (CSIRO)
The new sensor is being developed on behalf of the the United States Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) and the US-based research organization Sky Research. It’s purpose is to help clear 10 million acres (four million hectares) of US coastline that are contaminated with explosives. These are often corroded and leaking, so they’re an environmental as well as a safety issue.
The CSIRO sensor (Image: CSIRO)
The sensor is a form of magnetometer, which is a device for measuring local magnetic fields. It’s used in geophysical surveying, archaeology and by the military for mine-hunting and submarine detection. The principle is very simple. You have two sensors that measure the intensity of a magnetic field and with a pair of them you can measure the gradient of the field between them. Move the sensors over an area and you can build up a complete map of the magnetic landscape. Obviously, a magnetometer can detect metal, but it can also detect less obvious things like baked clay, old fire pits and explosives.

In this video, Brano Kusy tells us about the hardware and software platform being developd at CSIRO to monitor fruit bats in Australia. Lots of interesting insights on data collection, outlier detection, data cleanup, and visualization. Of particular note is how the large amount of data collected in this project and the application requirement has challenged their MySQL-based data storage and what new data storage products they are exploring.
