Regenerative Ranching with High Density Rotational Grazing
Regenerative ranching changes the paradigm of cattle and range management via biomimicry and a holistic approach. By working with herd animals' instincts to graze in high density clusters for short durations in rotational patterns, many benefits are derived that work synergistically for the greater good of the herd and the soil.
Manure is consistently deposited in the pastures as the animals are

Why 3 hours? Tranquil nature soundscapes are excellent for relaxing, meditation, insomnia, studying, tinnitus sufferers, or just play the background scenery on your big screen TV when you are not watching shows. The genre is called "slow television" or "slow TV".
Bison (also called buffalo) are the largest mammals in Yellowstone National Park shown here in the Lamar Valley at a watering hole. Buffalo can move with surprising speed to defend their young or when approached too closely by people. Bison breed from mid-July to mid-August, and bear one calf in April and May.
I recorded this on 6/11/13 from 1:30 at a watering hole.

"Grazing In The Grass" - Hugh Masekela (1968) Popcorn classic! The nicest cowbells ever!
Album: "The Promise of a Future"
Masekela was born in Kwa-Guqa Township, Witbank, South Africa. Following the 21 March 1960 Sharpeville Massacre—where 69 peacefully protesting Africans were shot dead in Sharpeville, and the South African government banned gatherings of ten or more people—and the increased brutality of the Apartheid state, Masekela left the country. He was helped by international friends such as Yehudi Menuhin, who got him admitted into London's Guildhall School of Music. During that period, Masekela visited the United States, where he was befriended by Harry Belafonte. He attended Manhattan School of Music in New York, where he studied classical trumpet from '60 to '64. In 1964, Myriam Makeba and Masekela were married, divorcing two years later. He played at the Monterey Pop Festival in '67 and became friends with Harry Belafonte. In '68 he made this number-one monster hit (4 million copies). He also played on Paul Simon's album Graceland and did the Graceland-tour.

Presented by Doug Peterson, State Soil Health Conservationist, USDA NRCS Missouri, Gallatin, MO.
View the webinar at http://conservationwebinars.net to earn CEUs.
This webinar focuses on how both soil health and productivity can be improved by managing grazing to mimic the impact bison had on prairies, a system characterized by high plant diversity, intensive grazing, trampling of vegetation, and long rest periods.
Because of their vegetative cover, pastures and rangeland are often overlooked as having degraded soils. In fact, grazing lands suffer from soil disturbing activities caused by overgrazing that results in reduced root mass, increased weed pressure, compacted soils, greater surface runoff, and diminished soil habitat. Our presenter will explain how managing stock density can be the most powerful tool available to manage grassland resources. He will cover how stock density affects utilization, reduces spot grazing, controls weed competition, improves manure distribution, and provides seed to soil contact. Simply put, managing stock density has the potential to improve and build more soil than we ever thought possible.

Regenerative ranching changes the paradigm of cattle and range management via biomimicry and a holistic approach. By working with herd animals' instincts to graze in high density clusters for short durations in rotational patterns, many benefits are derived that work synergistically for the greater good of the herd and the soil.
Manure is consistently deposited in the pastures as the animals are moved encouraging the symbiotic relationships between the cattle, birds, insects and plants to thrive in a balanced system that supports life.
A diverse use of cover crops provide high quality forage that keep the cattle thriving while improving the pastures with more organic matter and biodiversity. This innovative sustainable ranching approach offers a multitude of benefits that changes the entire conversation on how to manage cattle and other herds in a way that supports healthy ecosystems.

The 'occupation' of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge by disgruntled Nevada and Oregon ranchers has brought to the fore the use of public lands for raising cattle and other livestock. On this show we discussed the arguments for and against this use of public land.
Domestic livestock grazing is one of the traditional uses of public lands and occurs on about 235 million acres, mostly in the Western U.S. The Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service manages 98% of it.
There clearly are the differences between the grazing practices on High Desert BLM land and in the Point Reyes National Seashore. Livestock grazing can be ecologically destructive and some say it should be stopped on our public lands while others believe that properly managed grazing builds healthy soil, sequesters carbon and rebuilds degraded grasslands. Much has been said about deep discount ranchers getting to graze their livestock on public lands and how the US taxpayer is essentially subsidizing those who do.

Water security is guaranteed with over one kilometre of frontage to the permanent, crystal clear creek and numerous dams scattered over the property. Bike shift irrigation services approximately 65 acres and a 65 megalitre water licence is being sold with the property. An ongoing program of pasture improvement and weed management has been implemented by the current owner including regular applications of turkey litter. The property is divided into several paddocks suitable for cell grazing. Fencing is generally in good condition and lane ways channel the movement of cattle to the yards near the house.
The easy-living farmhouse has a large front verandah (12m x 4m), ideal for entertaining and comprises 3 bedrooms plus a study and two bathrooms. There is a large open plan kitchen, meals and family area as well as a second, very spacious living area overlooking the creek.
Other improvements include an old dairy used for storage, a huge shed for farm equipment and hay bales, cattle yards with Larford crush and scales, 3 phase power and irrigation servicing two grids.
The owner advises the property will carry 63 breeding units year in and out.

Stallions, like most any horse, are good. Some mares, geldings, and stallions are mean "by nature," but most horses are made bad by the people who "handle" them.
They all act up, have to defend themselves, do things we humans don't understand, but they are good beings.
I loved my stallion and will miss him.

Presented by Greg Brann, State Grazing Lands Specialist, USDA NRCS - Tennessee, and Owner-Operator of Big Spring Farm.
For CEU credits, watch this video at http://ConservationWebinars.net.
View the webinar to learn about the interaction between livestock, vegetation, and soil, and management needs to extend the grazing season and improve animal performance when managing multi-species grazing systems. The following topics will be discussed: 1) Livestock species and stocking rate as dynamic factors that depend on vegetation species and management; 2) How to get started with fencing and cost-effective methods to retrofit it for multi-species grazing; 3) Livestock management for reduced reliance on dewormers, fertilizer, equipment, and herbicides; 4) Livestock guardians and introducing new species; 5) Forage management for improved soil health and functioning of the soil; and 6) Forage and animal diversity. Additionally, this presentation will cover management and facilities needed for all seasons.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of the presenter as a producer and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of USDA.

Greg Judy and his wife Jan run a successful 1400 acre livestock grazing operation in Missouri founded on the principles of holistic, high density, planned grazing that results in sustainable lush forage. Greg willingly shares the “how-to” of his operation through public speaking and writing to enable others to create a successful business based on his grazing techniques. This is Greg’s FIRST TIME IN CANADA!

Founded in 2012, the “Practical Farmers of Ontario” (PFO) includes a diverse group of over 200 farmers and friends of farmers. Field crops, beef cattle, dairy (raw milk), hog, lamb and poultry are the top enterprises for PFO farmers, although many have other operations, including fruits and organic vegetables. Our non-farmer members believe that practical farmers can provide multiple benefits to society, including local food security and sound, sustainable farming practices.

"Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert," begins Allan Savory in this quietly powerful talk. And terrifyingly, it's happening to about two-thirds of the world's grasslands, accelerating climate change and causing traditional grazing societies to descend into social chaos. Savory has devoted his life to stopping it. He now believes -- and his work so far shows -- that a surprising factor can protect grasslands and even reclaim degraded land that was once desert.
