Thus, students who do not wish to pursue an academic career in philosophy may still find many opportunities to apply later these skills in public administration, legal studies, journalism, or in any other field that requires clear analytical thinking.

Dr. Eugene Mallove was murdered on May 14, 2004. His death has left a tremendous void in not only the daily lives of those who loved him, but also within the new energy field. Dr. Mallove, founder of Infinite Energy and New Energy Foundation, was a long-time advocate for new energy science and technology and perhaps the most well-known spokesperson for the field of Low Energy Nuclear Reactions. http://lenr-canr.org
Eugene Mallove, born in Norwich, New Hampshire on June 9 of 1947, is one of the prominent scientists who sacrificed his career in the cause of cold fusion.
Mallove attended MIT, where he earned his BS degree in 1969 and his MS degree in 1970. His studies were in aeronautical and astronautical engineering. He received his ScD in environmental health sciences in 1975 from Harvard.
He was a teacher, professor and writer, doing much of his work at MIT, where he was a consultant in the Lincoln Laboratory. His work there focused on new energy technologies, and he aided with research and development.
Other work included technology engineering at Hughes Research Laboratories and the Analytic Science Corporation.
Besides his interest in new energy technologies, Mallove taught science journalism at his alma mater of MIT, and at Boston University as well. In addition, he works at the news office at MIT as the chief science writer. He also was the science writer at Voice of America, and a broadcaster, as well.
The study of alternative energy was one of Mallove’s passions. In fact, his work with cold fusion cost him his position as chief science writer with the MIT news department. His commitment to the subject led him to found the New Energy Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the publicity for alternative energies. He also was the editor, publisher, consulting scientist, and science writer for the magazine, Infinite Energy.
He observed the first experiment of Fleischman and Pons in 1989, and was committed to cold fusion and Low Energy Nuclear Reaction from that time forth. His belief in the development of this technology cost his some credibility in a formal scientific community that he scorned for its closed-mindedness.
Forms of alternative fuel were also a focus of Mallove’s studies and experiments. He worked with biogas. Biodiesel, bioethanol, and carbonization, among others, to discover an affordable and effect fuel source to replace petroleum products and coal.
By far, his greatest efforts were in the realm of cold fusion and Low Energy Nuclear Reactions. At a time when many physicists and scientists were ridiculing the work of Fleischman and Pons and their cold fusion reactor, Mallove saw the experiment as the opening of a door to true alternative energy.

New York Times media columnist David Carr has died at 58, his employer announced late Thursday.
One of the New York Times' most engaging and colorful personalities, Carr was a stalwart of the media beat, helping readers -- and other journalists -- make sense of the rapidly changing industry.
Carr wrote the "Media Equation" column for The Times, which was published on Mondays. His writing style was conversational, analytic and peppered with humor. A reporter's reporter, Carr didn't just write about journalism -- he practiced it, taking on media heavyweights with in-depth pieces that exposed wrongdoing.
Before joining The Times, Carr reported for The Atlantic Monthly and New York magazine. But he made his name in the punchy world of alt weeklies -- first as editor of the The Twin Cities Reader, and later the Washington City Paper. He specialized in culture coverage, writing about music, television and film with ease.
In 2008, Carr published a memoir called "The Night of the Gun," a chronicle of his struggle with addiction, and subsequent recovery. The account was brutally honest, tracing his journey from troubled drug user to loving family man and successful professional.
In one passage, Carr describes a night spent at the north Minneapolis home of his then-girlfriend and dope dealer. Trapped in a "drug-induced paranoia," he narrowly escapes arrest when police officers arrive in the neighborhood.
Years later, Carr returned to the house: "Sitting there in a suit with a nice job in a city far away and those twins on their way to college, I almost would have thought I'd made it up," he wrote. "But I don't think I did."
Carr won plaudits for the book, which he reported over the course of two years.
"My story is charming or horrifying, depending on which part of it you focus on," Carr said of the memoir.

Tributes from colleagues and friends were immediate.
"On a personal level, David was one of the most generous men I've ever known," CNN's Brian Stelter said. Carr and Stelter worked together at The Times for six years and appeared together in the 2011 documentary "Page One: Inside The New York Times."
"David mentored and nurtured countless journalists, and I was so lucky to be one of them," Stelter said. "I loved him like a father and he treated me like a son."
"On a professional level, David was a giant," Stelter said. "He was the most important, most influential reporter of this tumultuous era in media. Readers, journalists and media moguls all looked to him to make sense of the present chaos and contemplate the future. And David never disappointed. The future without him is terrible to contemplate."
Bill Carter, another longtime colleague of Carr's, wrote on Twitter, "Can't possibly find words. David Carr was brilliant, funny, generous. My heart breaks for his family+his legion of friends. Proud to be one."
Carr passed away after collapsing at the The Times office in Manhattan. Earlier in the evening, he had moderated a discussion about the film "Citizenfour."
Related: Who we've lost in 2015
Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., publisher of The Times, said in a statement that Carr was "one of the most gifted journalists" to ever work at the newspaper.
Dean Baquet, the executive editor of paper, was equally effusive in his praise, describing Carr as "the finest media reporter of his generation," and a "remarkable and funny man."
"He was our biggest champion, and his unending passion for journalism and for truth will be missed by his family at The Times, by his readers around the world, and by people who love journalism," Baquet said.
Carr was also a Times exceptionalist. In one particularly notable defense of his employer, captured in the documentary film Page One, Carr stopped an interview with the founders of Vice after they criticized the newspaper's coverage of Liberia.
"Just a sec -- time out," Carr said. "Before [Vice] ever went there, we've had reporters there reporting on genocide after genocide. Just because you put on a [expletive] safari helmet and went and looked at some poop, that doesn't give you the right to insult what we do."

New houses under construction in Norfolk. Planning permission was required for such a development and would be granted by the local planning authority, subject to conditions.
Planning permission or planning consent is the permission required in the United Kingdom in order to be allowed to build on land, or change the use of land or buildings. Within the UK the occupier of any land or building will need title to that land or building (i.e. "ownership"), but will also need "planning title" or planning permission. Planning title was granted for all pre-existing uses and buildings by the Town and Country Planning Act 1947, which came into effect on 1 July 1948. Since that date any new "development" has required planning permission. "Development" as defined by law consists of any building, engineering or mining operation, or the making of a material change of use in any land or building. Certain types of operation such as routine maintenance of an existing building are specifically excluded from the definition of development. Specified categories of minor or insignificant development are granted an automatic planning permission by law, and therefore do not require any application for planning permission. These categories are referred to as permitted development.[1]
In the case of any proposal there is therefore a two-stage test: "is the proposal development at all?" and, if the proposal is development, "is it permitted development?" being granted.

Sensationalism is a type of editorial bias in mass media in which events and topics in news stories and pieces are over-hyped to increase viewership or readership numbers.[1] Sensationalism may include reporting about generally insignificant matters and events that don't influence overall society and biased presentations of newsworthy topics in a trivial or tabloid manner contrary to the standards of professional journalism.[2][3]
Some tactics include being deliberately obtuse,[4] appealing to emotions,[5] being controversial, intentionally omitting facts and information,[6] being loud and self-centered and acting to obtain attention.[5] Trivial information and events are sometimes misrepresented and exaggerated as important or significant, and often includes stories about the actions of individuals and small groups of people,[1] the content of which is often insignificant and irrelevant relative to the macro-level day-to-day events that occur globally. Furthermore, the content and subject matter typically doesn't affect the lives of the masses[1] and doesn't affect society, and instead is broadcast and printed to attract viewers and readers.[1] Examples include press coverage about the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal,[1][7][8] Casey Anthony Trial,[1][9] Tonya Harding's role in the attack of Nancy Kerrigan,[
