Pluto ice volcanoes? NASA space probe finds evidence of cryovolcanoes on dwarf planet - TomoNews
WASHINGTON — A probe has found evidence of ice volcanoes on Pluto's surface, suggesting the dwarf planet may not be as inactive as scientists originally thought.
Reuters reports that when NASA's New Horizons spacecraft flew past Pluto on July 14, it scanned the dwarf planet's surface and has been transmitting the data back to Earth.
The latest images that were received show what appears to be tw

Mission Overview: Why Go to Pluto ? Planetary exploration is a historic endeavor and a major focus of NASA. New Horizons is designed to help us understand worlds at the edge of our solar system by making the first reconnaissance of Pluto and Charon - a "double planet" and the last planet in our solar system to be visited by spacecraft. Then, as part of an extended mission, New Horizons would visit one or more objects in the Kuiper Belt region beyond Neptune.
Science at the Frontier
Our solar system contains three zones: the inner, rocky planets; the gas giant planets; and the Kuiper Belt. Pluto is one of the largest bodies of the icy, "third zone" of our solar system. The National Academy of Sciences placed the exploration of the third zone in general - and Pluto-Charon in particular - among its highest priority planetary mission rankings for this decade. New Horizons is NASA's mission to fulfill this objective.
In those zones, our solar system has three classes of planets: the rocky worlds (Earth, Venus, Mercury and Mars); the gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune); and the ice dwarfs of the Kuiper Belt. There are far more ice dwarf planets than rocky and gas giant worlds combined - yet, no spacecraft has been sent to a planet in this class. The National Academy of Sciences noted that our knowledge of planetary types is therefore seriously incomplete. As the first mission to investigate this new class of planetary bodies, New Horizons will fill this important gap and round out our knowledge of the planets in our solar system.
Ancient Relics
The ice dwarfs are planetary embryos, whose growth stopped at sizes (200 to 2,000 kilometers across) much smaller than the full-grown planets in the inner solar system and the gas giants region. The ice dwarfs are ancient relics that formed over 4 billion years ago. Because they are literally the bodies out of which the larger planets accumulated, the ice dwarfs have a great deal to teach us about planetary formation. New Horizons seeks those answers.
Binary Planet
Pluto's largest moon, Charon, is half the size of Pluto. The pair form a binary planet, whose gravitational balance point is between the two bodies. Although binary planets are thought to be common in the galaxy, as are binary stars, no spacecraft has yet explored one. New Horizons will be the first mission to a binary object of any type.
A Mission with Impact
The Kuiper Belt is the major source of cometary impactors on Earth, like the impactor that wiped out the dinosaurs. New Horizons will shed new light on the number of such Kuiper Belt impactors as a function of their size by cataloging the various-sized craters on Pluto, its moons, and on Kuiper Belt Objects.
Pluto and the Kuiper Belt are known to be heavily endowed with organic (carbon-bearing) molecules and water ice — the raw materials out of which life evolves. New Horizons will explore the composition of this material on the surfaces of Pluto, its moons and Kuiper Belt Objects.
The Great Escape
Pluto's atmosphere is escaping to space like a comet, but on a planetary scale. Nothing like this exists anywhere else in the solar system. It is thought that the Earth's original hydrogen/helium atmosphere was lost to space this way. By studying Pluto's atmospheric escape, we can learn a great deal about the evolution of Earth's atmosphere. New Horizons will determine Pluto's atmospheric structure and composition and directly measure its escape rate for the first time.
The Need to Explore
As the first voyage to a whole new class of planets in the farthest zone of the solar system, New Horizons is a historic mission of exploration. The United States has made history by being the first nation to reach every planet from Mercury to Neptune with a space probe. The New Horizons mission to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt - the first NASA launch to a "new" planet since Voyager more than 30 years ago - allows the U.S. to complete the reconnaissance of the solar system.

A space probe is an unmanned spacecraft that leaves Earth orbit and explores space. It may approach the Moon; enter interplanetary space; fly by, orbit or land on other planetary bodies; or approach interstellar space. Space probes are a form of robotic spacecraft.
See list of probes by operational status for a list of active probes; the space agencies of the USSR (now Russia and Ukraine), the United States, the European Union, Japan, China and India have in the aggregate launched probes to several planets and moons of the solar system as well as to a number of asteroids and comets. More than twenty missions are currently extant.
Once a probe has left the vicinity of Earth, its trajectory will likely take it along an orbit around the Sun similar to the Earth's orbit. To reach another planet, the simplest practical method is a Hohmann transfer orbit. More complex techniques, such as gravitational slingshots, can be more fuel-efficient, though they may require the probe to spend more time in transit. Some high Delta-V missions (such as those with high inclination changes) can only be performed, within the limits of modern propulsion, using gravitational slingshots. A technique using very little propulsion, but requiring a considerable amount of time, is to follow a trajectory on the Interplanetary Transport Network.
Do you remember names like Pioneer, Explorer, Mariner, Venera, Luna, Ranger, Voyager, Zond, or Surveyor? Many of the early probes launched by the United States and the former Soviet Union have borne these names.
Soon after the Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1 on 4 October 1957, both the former Soviet Union and the United States began to launch a flurry of probes to the Moon, Mars, and Venus.
These pages attempt to chronicle the unmanned probes which have been launched into deep space, from the early Pioneers to the Mars Rovers.
So, just what is a space probe, anyway? A space probe is an unmanned spacecraft that is used to make observations and send information back to Earth regarding these observed objects. While many satellites are also space probes, these pages are dedicated to the deep space probes, those which have escaped Earth's gravity.
So, just what kind of equipment does a space probe carry? Exactly what equipment is on any deep space probe, of course, depends upon its mission. All probes need a power supply. Some probes use solar arrays to generate power and batteries to store that power, but solar arrays are useless in missions which carry the probe far away from the sun. For this reason, nuclear power sources are often used. These sources may be either a small reactor or use some kind of radioisotope batteries, which are not reactive.
There needs to be propulsion and attitude control systems. In many cases, these will be ion thrusters, which are essentially an electrical propulsion system. Ion propulsion is virtually an inexhaustible system as long as the probe has power. The drawback is that ion thrusters only provide small amounts of thrust, so rapid changes in velocity, attitude, or direction are not possible.
Environmental controls may be present to protect equipment in the probe from temperature or pressure extremes. They may also control and protect against cosmic radiation and magnetic exposure. Communication systems are required so that the probe may transmit and receive data. This will entail the presence of transmitters, receivers, amplifiers, and antennas. Guidance controls are required so the the probe will know where it is and where it wants to go. Engineering systems will be in place to monitor and maintain the health of all the other systems. And none of this would be possible without the computer systems to monitor and direct it all.
The sophisticated scientific equipment on board provides purpose to the probe. The scientific instrumentation can be quite varied, and as mentioned before, will be mission specific. Cameras are commonly provided to provide an variety of imagery, still, motion, close-up, panoramic, etc., and use a variety of different filters. There may be instruments such as infrared sensors (to measure the temperature of an object), radars (to see planetary surfaces through clouds), ultraviolet sensors (to analyze atmospheric conditions), magnetometers (to measure magnetic fields), soil analyzers, spectrometers (to measure properties of light), and sensors to study wind velocities, or chemical compositions. A gravitometer may be present to determine specific gravities. If the probe includes a lander, that lander may have scoops or drills to collect surface samples. This is just a sampling of the information gathering devices which may be present. Many probes have their own set of web pages provided by the group or agency which controls their mission.

The latest images that were received show what appears to be two ice mountains, or cryovolcanoes, each with a depression on top, near the bottom of Sputnik Planum—the planet's heart-shaped plain.
The volcanoes, dubbed Wright Mons and Piccard Mons, are each about a hundred miles across, and 2 and 3.5 miles high respectively, reports the Smithsonian.
Unlike Earth volcanoes that spew lava, the structures on Pluto would likely spew out an icy slush containing nitrogen, ammonia, and methane.
The presence of mountains and icy plains suggest a geologically active surface, according to Scientific American. This indicates the presence of an internal heat source, which is speculated to be originating from radioactive elements in the core.
With only 20% of New Horizons' data downlinked to Earth, scientists will have to wait for the remaining pictures and measurements from the July encounter to confirm cryovolcanism on the dwarf planet.

Reuters reports that when NASA's New Horizons spacecraft flew past Pluto on July 14, it scanned the dwarf planet's surface and has been transmitting the data back to Earth.

Exploring can be a time consuming process and now with exploration feature added, its even easier to get lost within your endless world. Having something as simple as a probe to explore these areas while you work on your station can save a lot of time.

Space Engineer is like a mixture between Minecraft and Kerbal Space Program. The game is in pre-alpha and will be released on steam at some point in the future.
The main purpose of the game seems to be building a space fleet and fight/ally with the other factions. You build your ships piece by piece and the only know limit for the size of your ship is what you computer can handle.

NASA's Dawn spacecraft will have plenty of mysteries to investigate when it begins orbiting the dwarf planet Ceres next month, as the probe's latest photos attest.
Dawn's most recent images of Ceres, taken Feb. 12 at a distance of 52,000 miles (83,000 kilometers) away, show an abundance of craters on the dwarf planet, as well as numerous bright spots that have scientists baffled.
