http://www.euronews.com/ The crisis in Cyprus could influence timing of any new talks between the two sides.
The small island nation of Cyprus has been divided for almost forty years. A division which led to the Greek Cypriot south joining the EU as the Republic of Cyprus and prospering from this membership. Meanwhile, in the north, the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus remained isolated after a 2004 referendum on re-uniting the island was turned down by the south.
But today the banking crisis has left its impact in the south with businesses closing, banks calling in their loans and unemployment rising.
In an ironic twist of fate, the isolated north has been shielded from this crisis because of its very isolation but also because of Turkey which subsidises the northern Cypriot economy to the tune of three billion Turkish liras per year.
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus says it can help Cyprus out of its current crisis by working together on gas exploitation off the shores of Cyprus and transferring it through Turkey. Yet this would mean negotiating with Turkey which is still seen as the occupier by many in the south.
Euronews traveled to both northern and southern Cyprus to found out whether this crisis could become a catalyst in bringing the two sides back to the negotiating table to help solve one of Europe's oldest conflicts, the division of Cyprus.

Its inhabitants fled during the invasion, and it has remained abandoned ever since. In the 1970s, Famagusta was the number one tourist destination in Cyprus. To cater to the increasing number of tourists, many new high-rise buildings and hotels were constructed. During its heyday, the Varosha quarter of Famagusta was not only the number one tourist destination in Cyprus, but between 1970 and 1974, it was one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and was a favourite destination of celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Raquel Welch, and Brigitte Bardot. You can see the now ruined area from the beach at Palm Beach Hotel, but be careful not to take photographs or get too close to the fenced area.

Eng/Turkish/Nat
Twenty five years after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus the reunification of the island on the basis of U-N Security Council resolutions appears more distant than ever.
Turkish Cypriots insist on international recognition of their self-declared state in the north.
In the south, President Glafcos Clerides refuses to deal with or acknowledge the Turkish Cypriot state.
July 20th 1974, the Turkish fleet sets out from the southern Mediterranean port of Mersin headed for the island of Cyprus.
The mission - to thwart a Greece-backed coup to take over the island.
SOUNDBITE: (Turkish)
"We are going to the island to bring peace not war, we will
bring peace not only to the Turkish Cypriots but also to the Greeks
Cypriots too."
SUPERCAPTION: Bulent Ecevit, Turkish Premier
The Turkish invasion left the island divided between Turkish and Greek Cypriot sectors.
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, who ordered the Turkish troops to Cyprus became a hero for the people of northern Cyprus.
However, the euphoria did not last long.
Turkish Cypriots were denied recognition as an independent state despite their self-declaration in 1983 and were boycotted by the international community.
Efforts at reunification have failed.
Talks have been stalled since 1997 - with no signs of either side making concessions.
The leader of the Turkish Republic of northern Cyprus acknowledges Turkish support for the Turkish Cypriots, but strongly condemns the United Nations for having sided with the Greek Cypriots.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I would be very disappointed if Turkey did not recognise me and Turkey did not recognise me, why? because Turkey has died for me, has died for my liberty, has died for my rights, no nations would have done that. They merely would have watched and reported the incidents to the Security Council, as the United Nations did for
many years in Cyprus."
SUPERCAPTION: Rauf Denktas, Turkish Cypriot Leader
Turkish Cypriots charge that in the years leading up to the 1974 invasion Greek Cypriots attempted to drive them from their land.
Those war veterans who fought in Cyprus in 1974 still believe that Turkey did the right thing.
SOUNDBITE: (Turkish)
"Turkey was obliged to do this because there was massacring going on there, they were trying to wipe out the Turks, they wanted to take over the island, they were trying to do this by using the Greek Cypriots, unfortunately they were unable to succeed."
SUPERCAPTION: Ozgen Siktay, Cyprus war veteran
SOUNDBITE: (Turkish)
"At the beginning there were many incidents. They killed and massacred our people. Of course this upset us as the Turkish people. The peace operation to Cyprus in 1974 was the right thing to do for our people, now they can live in peace."
SUPERCAPTION: Huseyin Yuksek, Cyprus war veteran
Turkey and Turkish Cypriots have insisted on recognition for the breakaway republic, set up in 1983, ever since the European Union last year started membership negotiations with the Cypriot government, which are internationally recognised.
The two sides are divided by a buffer zone, manned by around 2-thousand United Nations troops.
The zone splits the island and the capital, Nicosia.
Turkey is the only country to recognize the Turkish Cypriot state and maintains 35-thousand troops there.
The U-N forces have had little to deal with except in 1996 when Turkish and Greek Cypriots clashed at the border, resulting in Greek Cypriot casualties.
A Greek Cypriot man who attempted to scale a Turkish flag pole was shot dead.
The U-N forces are hoping that the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Turkish invasion of the divided island will not spark off trouble between the two sides.

Cyprus Travel Guide http://bit.ly/1fhFShE
Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Larnaca, which has been the capital of the islands tourism and the gate to
Cyprus.
The island of the goddess Aphrodite lies in the eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea. Its climate is extremely pleasant, its scenery diverse. Beautiful beaches, high mountains, idyllic villages, monasteries decorated with Byzantine murals, busy cities, colorful harbors. There's a good reason why Cyprus has become a favorite vacation spot for tourists. Larnaca has been the capital of the islands tourism and the gate to Cyprus for three main reasons. One of these is its favorable location. Tourists can easily reach the beaches of Napa, the capital Nicosia, the Troodos Mountain or Paphos from here. The second is its international airport, the significance of which has greatly increased since the division of the island.
This is where all the charter planes land while the harbor welcomes the ships arriving from Israel and Arabic countries. This is where the one to two day boat trips to Syria and Lebanon set off. There are no trains on the island as the only line was demolished in the 50s. However, the road system is of good quality and public transportation is highly developed. Tourists can also use share taxis or rent cars and motorcycles. Let's not forget that as a heritage of the British governance, cars drive on the left hand side of the road which makes life a little difficult at first but by the time it's time to go home, you'll have become accustomed to it. The city is made up of three distinct parts. The seashore with its modern buildings and beach promenades, the old town and the one time Turkish quarter. The promenade is the site of folklore and art performances.
The most beautiful and most important site of Larnaca is the St. Lazarus church. According to John's gospel, Christ resurrected Lazarus who later fled to Cyprus and was the bishop of Kition for 30 years. The church stands on his grave. Lazarus didn't find eternal peace in death as his earthly remains were first taken to Constantinople, now Istanbul and then to Marseilles. All that remains of the ancient city of Kition is a not too large excavation in the northern part of Larnaca. The grave of Lazarus can be seen in the crypt below the church. The sign on his empty sarcophagus reads, friend of Jesus. The church has a central knave, two isles and three domes. There's Byzantine and Latin marks and is still in use today. Grandiose weddings and christenings are held here. The churchyard was a favorite burial site for foreigners especially high ranking Englishmen. Some researchers say that the name Larnaca stems from the ancient Greek word sarcophagus and refers to the tomb of Lazarus.

Kyrenia Castle, at the east end of the old harbour in Kyrenia is a 16th-century castle built by the Venetians over a previous Crusader fortification. Within its walls lies a twelfth-century chapel showing reused late Roman capitals, and the Shipwreck Museum. Research carried out at the site suggests that the Byzantines built the original castle in the 7th Century to guard the city against the new Arab maritime threat. The first historical reference to the castle occurs in 1191, when King Richard the Lionheart of England captured it on his way to the Third Crusade. After a short period, Richard sold the island to the Knights Templar, and then to his cousin Guy de Lusignan, the former king of Jerusalem. Initially the castle was quite small. John d'Ibelin enlarged it between 1208 and 1211. The Castle's main function was military and the improvements consisted of a new entrance, square and horseshoe-shaped towers, embrasures for archers, and dungeons.

Cyprus Travel Guide http://bit.ly/1fhFShE
Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Paphos, the most important religious, cultural and commercial center in Cyprus,
which used to be the capital at one point.
Cytherea, the Cyprus-born,, I shall sing who gives gentle gifts to mortals and on her lovely face always there are smiles and delightful bloom shines over it, wrote Homer in his hymn to Aphrodite. The goddess of beauty and love emerged from the sea by the shores of Petra Tou Romiou. This romantic tale and the beautifully shaped rocks of the shore entices a lot of people to swim out into the sea and touch the rock of Aphrodite in the hope of eternal youth. I've never seen such an island of such female character, never breathed an air that is so dangerous and so full of sweet temptations confessed the greatest neoGreek writer Nikos Kazantzakis. Troodos Mountain lies in the middle of island. Its highest peak, the Olympus is almost 2000m high. Its gentle slopes face southwest. Many people who did not like the heat built their houses or vacation homes here instead of the seashore. The air is always pleasantly cool and balsamic and the trees offer plenty of shade. English bureaucrats also moved here with their families and lived in great colonial style houses with large terraces and took care of their official business from here. As they love to hike in the woods, we have thank them for many tourist trails and paths that lead to wonderful sights.
The purpose of the exhibition rooms, the screening room and the pamphlets in the visitors' center at the gates of the Troodos Mountains is to show visitors the things that are worthwhile seeing on the mountain. This is all the more important as people who visit the mountain in summer have no idea what it is like in winter and vice versa. The documentary film shows the changing of the seasons, the native wildlife, colorful vegetation and offers a glimpse into the traditional life of the people living in the villages on the mountain. This is also good for business because summer vacationers may become winter skiers as a result of watching this film. An interesting fact is that Rimbaud worked here as a headman on the building of the governor's palace. The then 26 year old French engineer came to Cyprus looking for adventure and found the island to be poetic. We can see mouflans, foxes, and forest animals portrayed on film and also stuffed.
There are no snakes on the island today which is allegedly due to a whole shipment of cats being brought in at one point to kill these reptiles. Whether this story is true or not, cats are preferred to dogs on the island as the latter allegedly once spread some sort of infection throughout the island. Maybe this is the reason that there are wild cats in the Troodos Mountains yet not many dogs are kept in the houses. Dogs are only becoming popular pets nowadays. In ancient times and the middle ages, the mountainsides of Cyprus used to be covered with seemingly endless rows of cedar trees. The resistant good quality hardwood was used to build boats so forests became scarce. Luckily, they weren't destroyed altogether and thanks to methodical replanting, cedar forests can be found in great numbers around the mountains. South of the 1400m Tripoli Mountain in cedar valley, there are some 4000 cedar trees all under strict protection.

The Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque originally known as Saint Nicholas's Cathedral and later as the Saint Sophia Mosque of Magusa, is the largest medieval building in Famagusta Built between 1300 and 1400, it was consecrated as a Catholic cathedral in 1328. The cathedral was converted into a mosque after the Ottoman Empire captured Famagusta in 1571 and it remains a mosque to this day. The building is built in Rayonnant Gothic style, quite rare outside France, though "mediated through buildings in the Rhineland". The historic tie between France and Cyprus is evidenced by its parallels to French archetypes such as Reims Cathedral. Indeed, so strong is the resemblance, that the building has been dubbed "The Reims of Cyprus"; it was built with three doors, twin towers over the aisles and a flat roof, typical of Crusader architecture. The upper parts of the cathedral's two towers suffered from earthquakes, were badly damaged during the Ottoman bombardments of 1571, and were never repaired. With the Venetians defeated and Famagusta fallen by August 1571, Cyprus fell under Ottoman control and the cathedral was converted into a mosque, renamed the "St.Sophia Mosque of Magusa".
