Brisbane Melbourne Renegades beat Brisbane Heat by seven wickets in a Twenty20 clash at the Gabba on Saturday.

Renegades skipper Aaron Finch (65) top-scored for the team and shared a 111-run second-wicket stand with Victorian veteran Cameron White (55), ensuring that the team did not have to make a mad dash to overhaul the target at the end.

Finch was later named player of the match.

Earlier, Australian opener Joe Burns missed a chance to impress as Brisbane Heat reached 5-180 after winning the toss and batting.

The competitive total was thanks to late hitting by Ben Cutting (30 not out) and James Hopes (24 not out).

Burns did not help his cause on Saturday night when he was caught slogging spinner Xavier Doherty for a run-a-ball 16, with just one four.

The Heat have just one more BBL game — in Hobart on Tuesday night — scheduled before the Boxing Day Test.

Doherty (2-29) was on a hat-trick when he had Burns caught hitting out in the 10th over, reducing the Heat to 3-63.

An unbroken 51-run sixth wicket stand by Cutting and Hopes ensured the Heat faithful had something to cheer about at the Gabba.

Brisbane got into gear when they thrashed 20 off Nathan Rimmington (1-33) in the 19th over.

In that same over Cutting was dropped on 18 by Renegades skipper Aaron Finch at mid-off.

Captain Chris Lynn (35 off 20 balls), Nathan Reardon (28 off 22) and West Indies import Lendl Simmons (29 off 25) also got starts.
