'It was assumed that those who wrote books also read them, and writers were drawn, for a fee of a hundred pounds [£1,500 in today's money]....Cyril Connolly said the title of the programme ought to be "Money for Jam"....Anthony Blond, identifying a passage as from "Scouting for Boys" by Baden-Powell, added gratuitously that there was a statue erected to the hero of Mafeking in Germany with the inscription "Der Grosse Britische Homosexuell". This had to be cut....Unable to identify a passage from "Diary of a Nobody", I said, "Oh, it's probably from 'Augustus Carp, Esq. By Himself, Being the Autobiography of a Really Good Man'. The session was held up while [Kingsley] Amis and Robinson exclaimed that now three people knew the book. This got the comic masterpiece back into print after forty years of neglect. Mary McCarthy...failed with Gross to recognise a passage from Bellow's "Herzog", though they had been together on a jury that gave the novel an international award....Once there were two stutterers on the same panel. LETTERS LIVE: http://letterslive.com/
As World War II raged in May of 1942, three years before the publication of what has since become his best-known novel, Brideshead Revisited, English author Evelyn Waugh was in fact a newly-assigned member of the British Army’s Royal Horse Guards, a cavalry regiment then stationed in south-west Scotland to which he had recently been transferred. Back home, in dire need of some light relief, his wife of 5 years, Laura, was steadfastly holding fort whilst just weeks away from giving birth to their fourth child, Margaret. Entertainment soon arrived, in the form of a letter from her husband in which he expertly and with pitch-perfect comic timing told the story of a tree stump on the Earl of Glasgow’s estate.
Geoffrey Palmer OBE is an English actor known for his roles in British television sitcoms playing Jimmy Anderson in The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, Ben Parkinson in Butterflies and Lionel Hardcastle in As Time Goes By opposite Judi Dench for over a decade. His distinctive voice also gave him a career in advertising and television voiceovers, and as the narrator for the BBC series Grumpy Old Men and Grumpy Old Holidays. Geoffrey Palmer narrated audiobooks and he regularly voices books for the blind.
LETTERS LIVE is a series of live events celebrating the power of literary correspondence. Inspired by Shaun Usher's Letters of Note, Letters Live is an initiative by publishing company Canongate and Benedict Cumberbatch’s production company SunnyMarch. It has become a phenomenon wherever is has played in the UK.
The idea of LETTERS LIVE is simple: we ask talented, inspiring and high-profile artists from various disciplines to read letters out loud to our audiences. LETTERS LIVE celebrates letter writing and the art of correspondence first and foremost.

Alan Hollinghurst is one of the British novel’s most admired stylists. In the course of his writing career, Hollinghurst has fashioned a unique literary voice at once considered, ruminative and hauntingly affective. Appearing at Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre, he is joined in conversation by Michael Williams.
Amongst the topics discussed by Hollinghurst and Williams:
• What makes a good poem?
• The influence of Victorian poetry and boarding school
• The “huge prestige in writing poetry which nobody could understand”
• Being a “massive fan” of Lord of the Rings
• Beginning to feel like a writer
• Championing Ronald Firbank
• The Swimming Pool Library and its growth from earlier studies in writing
• Changing as a novelist and aspiring to formal shape
• Sympathising with, and liking, his characters and their predicaments
• Winning the Man Booker prize
•The centrality of poetry in The Stranger’s Child
• A short reading from the same
• Why skepticism is due to “almost all literary activities”
• Writing sex scenes
• Evelyn Waugh and sentimental nonsense
• The “ghettoisation” of literature
•Hollinghurst’s “complete fascination” with Henry James, and The Line of Beauty
