What the Killing of 21 Coptic Christians by ISIS Teaches All Christians Worldwide
The sad news over the weekend that ISIS, the Islamic State, murdered 21 Coptic Christians over their faith in Libya has renewed the call to fight this evil group. COPTIC PEOPLE ARE SONS OF THE PHAROHS:
The Copts as the successors of the ancient Egyptians are defined as the modern sons of the Pharaohs. They played an essential role in the whole Christian world, especially during the first five centuries.
Their religious background helped them to accept Christianity with eagerness and to enjoy its depth through their ascetic life, meditation and studying of the Holy Scripture.
In this topic we wish to throw some light on the ancient Egyptian culture and how it reacted towards the new Christian faith.
1- Their religious background:
It is well known that nature and upbringing have religiously minded ancient Egyptians since the very early times. Herodotus states that "The Egyptians are religious to excess, far beyond any other race of men." Their religious curiosity was satisfied by the Christian faith that puts no limits to spiritual progress, for it raises the believers towards the bosom of the Father that they might enjoy the likeness of God, fast communion with Him and acknowledgment of the eternal divine mysteries.
2- Their high scientific background:
Modern science achieved unceasing progress, particularly in the last century. Many of the ancient Egyptians scientific work which took place thousands of years before Christ are still considered to be obscure secrets; for example the pyramids with their scientific wonder and mysteries, the art of embalming, the art of carving, colored painting on walls etc. All of these arts are still under research to the extent that some believe that the ancient Egyptians were working under the guidance of superhuman (coming from the outer space), or from other stars. Some consider that man would have conquered space much earlier if the library of Alexandria had not been burned, which led to losing scientific secrets of great importance.
In any case, the fact is that the ancient Egyptians put their scientific abilities at the disposal of the religious thinking (such as the building of the pyramids, embalming etc.). It had influenced the Copts. They looked to science not as an enemy of religion or contrary to it, but that science acts in favor of religion. Therefore, the school of Alexandria opened its doors to the scholars and philosophers, believing that science and philosophy could serve the true spiritual life.
3- Their religious dogmas:
A- Each major town in ancient Egypt used to recognize some kind of a triad. But these triads were too alien from the Christian Holy Trinity.
B- Their philosophers believed in One Supreme Being; the best example is King Ikhnaton (1383-1365 B. C.).
C- While the majority of the ancient civilizations were preoccupied with the earthly life, seeking temporary pleasures, the Egyptian mind was absorbed in the world to come, and in the resurrection. When they were converted to Christianity, they became involved in awaiting the advent of the Risen Christ, through their lengthy hymns, excessive fasting, enduring and suffering with joy. This eschatological attitude has its effect on our worship, liturgies and even in our daily life.
D- The Cross: Egyptians tended to identify the Cross with their own sign of eternal life, "the Ankh," which was held in the hands of the immortals such as gods and pharaohs. The "Ankh" sign took the shape of a cruciform with rounded tip, which was readily adopted and used by the Copts from the very early times.
E- In addition to this, the Egyptians seem to have had an idea of the unity of God, His eternity, His infinity, as well as His loving kindness.

The sad news over the weekend that ISIS, the Islamic State, murdered 21 Coptic Christians over their faith in Libya has renewed the call to fight this evil group. As Christians, we must learn from this. Even in western society, situations like this can meet us. These men stayed true to their faith. Though they were given the opportunity to renounce Yeshua, they chose not to until their end. Would you be willing to do the same if faced with being beheaded?

Coptic art is most well known for its wall-paintings, textiles, illuminated manuscripts, and metalwork, much of which survives in monasteries and churches. My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Coptic art is most well known for its wall-paintings, textiles, illuminated manuscripts, and metalwork, much of which survives in monasteries and churches. Origins[edit]
Coptic art displays a mix of native Egyptian and Hellenistic influences.[3] Subjects and symbols were taken from both Greek and Egyptian mythology, sometimes altered to fit Christian beliefs. Persia and Syria also influenced Coptic art, though to a lesser extent, leaving images such as the peacock and the griffin.
Icon painting[edit]
Coptic icons have their origin in the Hellenistic art of Egyptian Late Antiquity, as exemplified by the Fayum mummy portraits.[4] The faces of El Fayum are examples of the Coptic art in the 2nd century AD showing the Greek and Roman influence on the Coptic art but with some distinctive features related to Egyptian art
The Arabic conquest of Egypt allowed the Coptic art to influence the Islamic art and architecture with many features that are now integral in the Islamic art.
Beginning in the 4th century, churches painted their walls and made icons to reflect an authentic expression of their faith.
The figures of saints display eyes and ears larger in proportion to the rest of the face and a smaller mouth, as well as enlarged heads, signifying a spiritual relationship with God and devotion to prayer. Martyrs' faces were peaceful.
Many Coptic icon painters did not sign their names, but the prominent among them include St. Luke (traditionally believed to be the first icon painter) and two Coptic Popes, Pope Macarius I and Pope Gabriel III[5]
Starting mid-18th century icon painting enjoyed a revival in Egypt and once again was popular. One of the most famous artists was Yuhanna al-Armani whose works were noted for using more developed techniques and novel construction (e.g. using a set of icons to tell a single story).[6]
Influence[edit]
The influence of Coptic art and architecture on Islamic architecture and incorporation of some Coptic features in Islamic building started as early as the 7th century AD [7]
As the Church of Alexandria was the first Church of Africa the influence of Coptic art spread to Sudan and Ethiopia. Some forms of the Coptic cross are known as the Ethiopian cross and many Churches in Ethiopia show the influence of the Coptic art.
Menas flasks are very cheap terracotta bottles bought by pilgrims to Abu Mina, the shrine of Saint Menas, in the 4th and 5th centuries. The clay was impressed before firing with blocks with images of the saint. They have been found nearly all over the Christian world, and many scholars trace influence from their fairly crude images in the emerging iconography of Western medieval art, among other Coptic influences.
Coptic textiles[edit]
A remarkable number of Coptic textiles survive today, due to the Coptic custom of burying them with the dead, and to the aridity of Egyptian graves. The textiles are commonly linen or wool and use the colors red, blue, yellow, green, purple, black and brown. The dyes were derived from madder, indigo, woad, saffron, the murex shell, and the kermes insect. The first looms used were horizontal low-warp; vertical high-warp looms were introduced later. The basic garment was the tunic, which would become the dalmatic. Some tunics were woven in one piece. They were decorated by clavi, a stylistic import from Rome.
Some fine examples of the Coptic textile are shown in museums all over the world and a large collection is in the Coptic Museum in Coptic Cairo [8] Tens of thousands of coloured fragments found their way into the museums of the world, especially after 1889 when the French archaeologist Albert Gayet published a catalogue of Coptic art and, in the Bulaq Museum, staged the first exhibition of Coptic monuments.[9] The early Coptic textiles still produced pictures and decoration incorporating Egyptian and Greek motifs. Shrouds, for example, might incorporate classical elements were painted in the form of an Egyptian sarcophagus and include representations of Egyptian gods to protect the dead. Later coptic textiles showed the influence of Byzantium and later, Islamic art.

STORYLINE:
A church in Benghazi stood in ruins on Friday, after being raided the day before by unknown assailants and set on fire.
Witnesses say that the assailants torched the church, used by Egyptian Christians, a week after scores of Christians were detained and reportedly abused by militias there for alleged proselytising.
"A group of seven people wearing military uniforms stormed in to the church and started to fire their guns," said Abdul Salam Mohamed, an eyewitness.
They then "climbed to the top and took down a flag of the Virgin Mary that was on top of the church."
Churches, shrines used by traditionalist Muslims, and a Commonwealth war cemetery have also been vandalised in Benghazi and other cities in attacks blamed on hard-line Islamist puritans.
Thursday's arson attack comes amid a wave of assaults targeting Christians in the city and in the latest instances of abuse by the state-financed forces.
One man, Ezzat Atallah, died in detention in Tripoli after being transferred from his prison in Benghazi.
Atallah was one of around 100 Christians, mostly Egyptians, who were detained by militias on suspicion of trying to covert Muslims to Christianity.
Christians, women, journalists, refugees and those considered former Gadhafi loyalists have been repeatedly targeted by militias, whom the state rely on them to serve as security forces since the police and military remain a shambles.
Militias first rose up as "brigades" during the eight-month civil war against dictator Moammar Gadhafi, and at the time their fighters likely numbered in the thousands.
Now an estimated 200,000 people are registered by the government on the rolls of militias.
Libya has seen multiple outbreaks of disorder since the 2011 civil war that led to the killing and ousting of Gadhafi.
The security and political vacuum has allowed hardline Islamist militias to act with impunity, especially since the government has relied on ex-rebel groups to keep order in absence of a functioning police force or a unified military.
On 11 September 2012, four Americans including the US Ambassador in Libya Chris Stevens were killed in an assault on the US mission in Benghazi.

Egyptian Christians ventured out to church on Sunday as Egypt continued to brace itself for more violence later in the day.
Further confrontation between the Muslim Brotherhood and security forces are expected later on Sunday.
In the four days since security forces cleared two sit-in camps by supporters of Egypt's ousted president, his supporters have attacked dozens of Coptic churches along with homes and businesses owned by the Christian minority.
Nearly 40 churches have been looted and torched, while 23 others have been attacked and heavily damaged since Wednesday.
Chaos erupted after Egypt's military-backed interim administration moved in to clear two camps packed with protesters calling for ousted president Mohammed Morsi's reinstatement, killing scores of protesters and sparking deadly clashes nationwide.
"We really suffered in the period that they were protesting in Rabaa," said Amal, a Coptic Christian too afraid to give her family name for fear of retribution.
"I was constantly verbally abused for being a Christian, even on the public buses they would insult me for being Christian and accused us of being infidels and that we as Christian people deserve to be wiped off the face of this country because they believe that we do not deserve to live in this country."
The campaign of intimidation appears to be a warning to Christians outside Cairo to stand down from political activism.
Coptic Christian, Magdy Emad said attempts at reconciliation have come to nothing.
"The Muslim Brotherhood, I really don't understand what they are doing. We would have sincerely wished to communicate with them to build this nation and reconcile to find a peaceful solution but it's all been in vain," he said.
Christians have long suffered from discrimination and violence in Muslim majority Egypt, where they make up 10 percent of the population of 90 (m) million.
Attacks increased after the Islamists rose to power in the wake of the 2011 Arab Spring uprising that drove Hosni Mubarak from power, emboldening extremists.
But Christians have come further under fire since Morsi was ousted on July 3, sparking a wave of Islamist anger led by Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood.
Egypt's Coptic Christian church renewed its commitment to the new political order on Friday, saying in a statement that it stood by the army and the police in their fight against "the armed violent groups and black terrorism."

STORYLINE:
A Coptic priest in the Paris suburb of Chatenay-Malabry spoke on Tuesday about his fears over the threats to his church in the form of online messages.
The Internet threats were discovered soon after a bombing against Coptic Christians in Egypt killed 21 people on Saturday.
"What was written in this threat says that what happened in Alexandria is only the beginning, that there will be more attacks after, either in churches in Egypt, or in churches outside Egypt. In Europe they mentioned France, and a specific threat against this church," said Father Guirguis Lucas.
Father Lucas lodged a legal complaint about the threats after a member of his congregation noticed the messages online, police reported.
French anti-terror police have opened a preliminary investigation.
The Paris police prefecture said officers in the capital and its surroundings had put Coptic churches under more careful surveillance since the messages were discovered.
Tens of thousands of members of Coptic community live in France.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack on Egyptian Christians on Saturday.
Investigators believe a suicide attacker carried out the bombing on the Saints Church in Alexandria as worshippers were emerging from midnight Mass.

Pope Shenouda III, the patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church who led Egypt's Christian minority for 40 years during a time of increasing tensions with Muslims, died on Saturday.
He was 88.
His death comes as the country's estimated 10 (m) million Christians are feeling more vulnerable than ever amid the rise of Islamic movements to political power after the toppling a year ago of President Hosni Mubarak.
The months since have seen a string of attacks on the community, heightened anti-Christian rhetoric by ultraconservatives known as Salafis and fears that coming governments will try to impose strict versions of Islamic law.
Tens of thousands of Christians packed into the main Coptic cathedral in Cairo on Saturday evening hoping to see his body.
Women in black wept and screamed.
Some, unable to get into the overcrowded building, massed outside, raising their hands in prayer.
"This is a great loss for all the Egyptian people. Only God could help us through this loss," one man told The Associated Press.
Another said Shenouda had died "at a critical time".
An archbishop later announced to the crowd that the funeral would be held in three days.
In the meantime, Shenouda's body will be put on display in the cathedral, sitting in the Mar Morqos - or St. Mark - throne from which the pope in his elaborate regalia traditionally oversaw services.
Shenouda died in his residence at the cathedral, and the state news agency MENA said he had been battling liver and lung problems for several years.
For Egypt's Christians, he was a charismatic leader, known for his sense of humour - his smiling portrait was hung in many Coptic homes and shops.
He was also a deeply conservative religious thinker who resisted calls by liberals for reform.
Above all, many Copts saw him as the guardian of their community living amid a Muslim majority in this country of more than 80 (m) million people.

Pope Shenouda III, the patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church, who led Egypt's Christian minority for 40 years during a time of increasing tensions with Muslims, has died.
Egypt's state news agency MENA said Shenouda died on Saturday after battling liver and lung problems for several years. He was 88.
The patriarch, known in Arabic as Baba Shenouda, headed one of the most ancient churches in the world.
The church traces its founding to Saint Mark, who is said to have brought Christianity to Egypt in the 1st century, during the reign of the Roman emperor Nero.
For Egypt's estimated 10 (m) million Coptic Christians, he was a charismatic leader, known for his sense of humour - his smiling portrait was hung in many Coptic homes and shops.
Above all, many Copts saw him as the guardian of their minority group, living amid a majority Muslim population in this country of more than 80 (m) million people.
Shenouda sought to do so by striking a conservative balance.
During the rule of President Hosni Mubarak, he gave strong support to his government, while avoiding pressing Coptic demands too vocally in public to prevent a backlash from Muslim conservatives.
After Mubarak's fall a year ago, Christians grew increasingly worried over the rising power of Muslim conservatives.
Islamic hardliners carried out a string of attacks on churches, and their clerics gave increasingly dire warnings that Christians were hoarding weapons and seeking to take over the country.
Christian anger over the violence was further stoked when troops harshly put down a Christian protest in Cairo, killing 27 people.
In an unprecedented move aimed at showing unity, leaders from the Muslim Brotherhood, along with top generals from the ruling military, joined Shenouda for services for Orthodox Christmas in January at Cairo's main cathedral.
Shenouda also met Sheik Ahmed al-Tayeb, Imam of Cairo's al-Azhar Mosque, in 2011, amid attacks by Muslim fundamentalists on Christians, in an attempt to diffuse the religious tensions in Egypt.
Still, a sector of Christians - particularly among youth who supported the revolution against Mubarak - grew critical of Shenouda, saying his conservative approach was not doing enough to stem what they saw as growing anti-Christian violence and discrimination against their community.
In recent years, the ageing patriarch travelled repeatedly to the United States for treatment.
A physician who worked at a Cairo hospital when the pope was treated there in 2007 said Shenouda suffered from prostate cancer that had spread to his colon and lungs.
Shenouda was born Nazeer Gayed on 3 August 1923, in the southern city of Assiut.
After entering the priesthood, he became an activist in the Sunday School movement, which was launched to revive Christian religious education.
At the age of 31, Gayed became a monk, taking the name Antonious El-Syriani and spending six years in the monastery of St Anthony.

STORYLINE:
There were scenes of mass grief in the Egyptian capital Cairo on Sunday, as Coptic Christians turned out to mourn the death on Saturday of Pope Shenouda III, the patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church.
Shenouda, who led Egypt's Coptic Christian minority for 40 years during a time of increasing tensions with Muslims, died after battling liver and lung problems for several years.
The patriarch, known in Arabic as Baba Shenouda, headed one of the most ancient churches in the world, which traces its founding to Saint Mark, who is said to have brought Christianity to Egypt in the 1st Century during the reign of the Roman emperor Nero.
Mourners waited outside Cairo's main Coptic Cathedral for their opportunity to file past the body of their Pope, dressed in his ceremonial robes.
For Egypt's estimated 10 (m) million Coptic Christians, he was a charismatic leader, known for his sense of humour.
His smiling portrait was hung in many Coptic homes and shops.
In recent years, the ageing patriarch travelled repeatedly to the United States for treatment.
Many Copts saw him as the guardian of their minority living amid a majority muslim population in this country of more than 80 (m) million people.

Shenouda has been challenged by secular Copts who call for reform in the church and the reduction of the role of clergymen in Christians' life.
Shenouda was born Nazeer Gayed on August 3, 1923, in the southern city of Assiut.

7147/A: EYGPT: NEW POPE FOR COPTIC CHURCH
In Cairo in November 1971, the Coptic Orthodox
Church of Egypt elected its 117th Pope and Patriarch
in line from St. Mark. He is Shenouda III and he now
assumes responsibility for four million Christians in
Egypt and about 15 million more in Ethiopia, Africa
and the rest of the Middle East. The Coptic Church is a
schismatic branch of the Eastern Orthodox Church (it
broke away in the fifth century), and claims to be the
oldest Christian denomination in the world. It traces
its history back to St.Mark the Evangelist, who is
believed to have founded the Church around 68 AD
(CE). In this report we highlight the colourful and
ancient ritual by which a new Pope is elected.

STORYLINE
Twenty-five people, including police officers, were wounded in clashes in Egypt's Mediterranean port city of Alexandria on Friday, according to a police official.
More than two-thousand Muslims had gathered in protest outside a Coptic Christian in the city, demanding an apology for a drama presented in the church deemed by them as offensive to Islam.
Police used batons and tear-gas to try to disperse the crowd and demonstrators responded by throwing stones, the official said.
The protesters also hurled stones at the church itself, breaking windows and damaging its facade, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to issue press statements.
Protests outside the at the St. George Church started a week ago following the distribution of DVD copies of a drama performed inside the church in 2003 entitled: "I Was Blind But Now I can See."
The drama features a Christian university student who converts to Islam when a group of Muslim men promise him money.
When he becomes disenchanted with his move, the men threaten him to stop him from returning to his original faith.
According to the head of the church, the play was performed only once to coincide with the Coptic New Year, two years ago.
He denied the drama was offensive to Islam and insisted that the church had no knowledge about who was behind distributing the DVDs.
Security officials have blamed Islamic fundamentalists for fuelling the tension by distributing the DVDs.
Tensions over the theatre performance first surfaced on Wednesday when a Muslim student stormed inside the church and stabbed a Coptic novitiate nun, seriously injuring her.
The play and the protest reflect the charged atmosphere between Muslims and Christians in Egypt, where accusations of forced conversions are routine.
Last December, angry Copts protested in Cairo for four days and clashed with police when the wife of a priest fled her home in the south to convert to Islam.
She later returned home and resumed practicing Christianity.
Egypt is holding a legislative election on November 9 and the Muslim Brotherhood is competing against the ruling National Democratic Party and other secular opposition parties.
The Ministry of Interior, which is responsible for security, has dispatched thousands of its troops to Alexandria anticipating trouble.
Coptic Christians make up about 10 percent of Egypt's overwhelmingly Muslim population of 70 (m) million.

The head of the Coptic church celebrated the forthcoming Easter Sunday in a midnight mass in accordance with the Orthodox calendar, to an audience of worshippers of one of the world's oldest Christian denominations.
AP Television footage showed worshippers packed into the cathedral to attend the service led by Pope Shenouda III, the spiritual leader of Egypt's Coptic Christians.
Orthodox Christians use a different calendar from Roman Catholics and Protestants, so their celebration of Easter usually falls on a different date from the rest of the Christian community and always after the Jewish festival of Passover.
Coptic Christians comprise roughly 10 percent of Egypt's 70 (m) million population.
