Italy’s Verona, Padova, and Ravenna
In the shadow of Venice, we visit three great cities. Padova is famed for its venerable university, precious Giotto frescoes, and pilgrim-packed Basilica. Verona is a hit with aficionados of Roman ruins and Romeo and Juliet fans. And Ravenna, with its shimmering mosaics, was once the western bastion of the Byzantine Empire. We enliven each stop with a tasty dose of Italian "dolce vita."

Ravenna, notte tra il 17 e 18 luglio 2015. Dopo la splendida serata benefica per l’associazione di Federica Bovolenta a Marina di Ravenna, decido di non fermarmi a dormire e rientrare. Alright guys, Ive read your comments from other videos, and tried to implement as many as I could. I changed the Romans to look more Roman, I zoomed out more to make the battle easier to follow, I did a custom historical battle, I tried to make the battle more tactical (as best as I could given the swarm of people set fourth upon me). But remember my videos are trying to mimic the coolest battles in our favorite movies. I know this is a tactical game, but my videos arent really about tactics, I have seen some epic tactical videos and a bunch of players would stomp me into the dirt, I acknowledge this. My best tactic? Raise an army so big your computer cant handle it haha :) Anyway critiques positive and negative always welcome. Keep in mind that I am a gamer not a historian.

Intimated by this force of nature, Queen Ravenna takes steps to insure her rule remains steadfast and is hellbent on smiting this powerful fairy from the neighboring forrest before she is overthrown. Little does Ravenna know that the more she invites conflict, the more it will take from her.

Rick Steves' Europe Preview: Italy's Verona, Padova, and Ravenna
In the shadow of Venice, we visit three great cities. Padova is famed for its venerable university, precious Giotto frescoes, and pilgrim-packed Basilica. Verona is a hit with aficionados of Roman ruins and Romeo and Juliet fans. And Ravenna, with its shimmering mosaics, was once the western bastion of the Byzantine Empire. We enliven each stop with a tasty dose of Italian dolce vita.

Basilica dei Frari (Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari)
The glorious gothic Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, constructed around 1330, is primarily associated with the name of Titian, Venice's painter son who is buried here, alongside the city's celebrated sculptor, Antonio Canova. Titian made his reputation and crowned his early years by painting the huge altar piece, The Assumption of the Virgin, for the Franciscan brothers of the Frari in 1518. Titian also executed the painting over the Pesaro family altar in the north aisle. The inclusion of the flag and Turk in the painting alludes to Bishop Pesaro's victory over the Turks at Santa Maura. Titian's tomb, located in the south aisle, faces the large marble pyramid created for Canova, depicting St Mark's lion paying homage to the dead sculptor. Ironically, the design, executed by Canova's pupils, was based on Canova's own plans for a new monument to Titian.
Opening Times: Mon-Sat 0900-1800, Sun 1300-1800.
Admission Fees: Yes
Disabled Access: Yes
Unesco: Yes
Address: San Polo 3072, Venice, Italy
Basilica di San Marco (St Mark's Basilica)
The golden Byzantine St Mark's Basilica was founded in the ninth century as a shrine for the relics of St Mark. Built on a plan of a Greek cross, its Eastern appearance is enhanced by golden mosaics, originally created by craftsmen from the Byzantine court at Ravenna. The interior houses many of Venice's greatest treasures, including the venerated icon of the Madonna Nicopeia. The golden screen behind the high altar - the crypt in which St Mark is supposed to be buried - is the Pala d'Oro, beautifully crafted with sapphires, emeralds and rubies and inset with enamels from Constantinople. Before leaving St Mark's, visitors should pause to admire the 12th-century pavement, a resplendent mosaic of glass and marble. It is possible to book online to avoid the long queues at www.venetoinside.com
Opening Times: Mon-Sat 0945-1700, Sun 1400-1700 (Apr-Oct); Mon-Sat 0945-1700, Sun 1400-1600 (Nov-Mar).
Admission Fees: Yes
Disabled Access: Yes
Unesco: Yes
Address: Piazza San Marco, Venice, Italy
Campanile di San Marco (Bell Tower)
The bell tower, which is located to one side of St Mark's Square, is the tallest structure in Venice and offers a unique view of this fabulous city. At 318 ft (97m) high, visitors prepared to make the lengthy climb can look out over the rooftops of the city. In a strange twist, the view from the top can be good enough on a clear day to catch a glimpse of the distant dolomites, but doesn't allow for a view of any of the canals. The tower collapsed in 1902 and was rebuilt exactly as before.
Opening Times: 0700-1545 (Nov-Apr) 0900-2100 (Jul-Sept).
Admission Fees: Yes
Disabled Access: No

Take a tour of Ravenna Tower in Italy -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Serving as the bell tower for the Basilica of St. Apollinare in Classe in Ravenna, Italy is the stunning Ravenna Tower.
This round, multi-level brick bell tower was a later addition made to the 6th century basilica.
Constructed around the 9th or 10th centuries, this structure features a pointed top dome and mullioned windows.
The town was particularly important to the Roman Empire because of the nearby port
of Classis, and as such a statue of Emperor Augustus stands in the church's foreground.
The interior of the basilica features Christian sarcophagi, specially crafted marble columns, and exquisite mosaics.
The Byzantine architecture carried throughout the basilica and bell tower reflect the beauty and simplicity of this holy site.

For my holiday season gift to you, I’m sharing three exciting glimpses of why I love Europe on three successive days. Yesterday was remote. Tomorrow is wild. And today, it's sacred.
In this clip, let’s savor perhaps the most exquisite medieval art in Europe: they Byzantine mosaics in Ravenna, Italy, and the soaring Gothic architecture and stained glass at Chartres, France.
These images share the joy I get from my work. Along with my 100 workmates here at Rick Steves’ Europe, I’m working harder than ever. And knowing that because of our hard work, 20,000 happy travelers who join our tours this year will learn that they have been art lovers all their lives — and never realized it until now — brings me great satisfaction. In a sense, our writers and guides here at Rick Steves’ Europe evangelize an appreciation of art, history, and culture.
Happy dreams of travels filled with sumptuous art treasures...

Take a tour of Spanish Town of Ronda in Ronda, Spain -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
On the southern tip of Spain, in the state of Andalusia, is a remote gem of untouched Spanish culture and charm.
This is Ronda, a community which sits above an infamous ravine more than 100 meters deep.
The town has existed since at least the 6th century BC, and has come under the rule of many cultures including the Celts, Phoenicians, and Visigoths.
Ronda is known as one of the White Hill Towns because of the white homes lining its cobbled streets.
It has served as an inspirational haven for writers like Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles.
Sweeping views, gorge-spanning bridges and a long tradition of bullfighting, are some of the many pleasures found in this ancient yet pristine locale.
