Brief geography, history and people of Gambia. The Gambia is a small West African country with a population of 1.970.000. (2015) bounded by Senegal, with a narrow Atlantic coastline. It's known for its diverse ecosystems around the central Gambia River. It is a strip of land 15 to 30 miles (25 to 50 kilometres) wide and 295 miles long, on either bank of the Gambia River; except for a short coastline. Abundant wildlife in its Kiang West National Park and Bao Bolong Wetland Reserve, includes monkeys, hippos and rare birds. The capital, Banjul, and nearby Serekunda offer access to beautiful beaches running south from Bakau to Kololi.that attract tourism. Its unusual shape and size are attributable to territorial compromises arising from 19th-century Anglo-French rivalry in western Africa. After 200 years of British colonial rule The Gambia gained its independence on February 18, 1965; it formed a short-lived federation of Senegambia with Senegal between 1982 and 1989. In 1991 the two nations signed a friendship and cooperation treaty. FLAG; RED,BLUE AND GREEN. The red stripe represents the sun shining on the Gambia River and the blue represents that river, which runs through the centre of the country and the centre of the flag. The Green symbolizes the land, forests, and agriculture and the white stripes stand for unity, peace and purity. ECONOMY. The felling of the forest left Gambia with impoverished landscape. Only suitable for growing peanuts, this is the main product for exports to sustain the country’s economy. The industry focuses on processing peanuts and other agricultural products. as well as in the construction of fishing boats, footwear, beverages and handicrafts. It seeks to recover areas for cultivation of cotton, sisal, citrus snuff, rice, millet, cassava and maize. Animal husbandry: Cattle, sheep, goats and poultry are raised in lower scale. To say most and not all the populations of Gambia have lively markets in which they buy and sell all kinds of goods. In the capital, Banjul , is the Albert Market, a hub of the town where you can find food , crafts , and all kinds of souvenirs. Natural Resources; There are known deposits of: 1- Quartz Sand Large reserves of quartz (silica) sand, suitable for glass manufacture, have been identified in the Greater Banjul Area, notably in Abuko, Brufut, Darsilami (Western Division); Mbankam and Bakendik (North Bank Division); and Kaiaf, (Lower River Division). 2- Heavy Mineral Beach Sand Deposits The raised beach sand, which is characteristic of The Gambia's coastal beaches, contain ilmenite, rutile, and zircon. 3- Hydro-carbon Potential The Gambia depends on imported petroleum products. The government recognizes the critical need for secure and stable supply of petroleum products and the need to stabilize prices to avoid induced inflation. 4- Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) All liquefied petroleum gas in The Gambia is imported overland from Senegal. LPG is mostly used for domestic purposes and on a limited scale for industrial purposes. Transaction costs in importing and bottling gas have resulted in large price differentials between Senegal and The Gambia. This makes gas unaffordable to most Gambians, and hence constituting a severe limitation on the promotion of the use of LPG. RELIGION About 95% of the population are declared Muslims, but, despite, the number of Mosques that you may find in the different regions and areas in the country, the Islamic religion is not practiced here with the same intensity as in the Middle East..In fact , most of those who profess the Islamic religion also believe in some form of animism, which in most cases wane the fanatical religious practices. ETHNIC GROUPS. The population consists of Mandingos, Fulani,Wolof, Jola, Serahuli and a range of others. But the official language is English.
