The late '50s in England saw a legion of young teen idols, groomed for music stardom by managers eager to see their clients land a chart hit or two on their way to careers as all-around entertainers, or even television or movie actors. A few of them, like Cliff Richard and Billy Fury, were genuinely exciting rock & rollers when they started out, although most were just playing at rock & roll, and lacked the talent to make much lasting impact in any area of entertainment.
Adam Faith was one of the better ones, a late-'50s/early-'60s singing star who went on to a respectable acting career in television, movies and theater. Born Terence Nelhams in Acton, West London, he made his first appearances in public at the legendary 21's coffee bar in London's Soho. He came to the attention of producer Jack Goode, which, in turn, introduced Faith to band leader John Barry (the music director of Goode's music showcase series Oh Boy! and the music director of the Drumbeat series), which resulted in the invitation to audition for a role in Drumbeat. Faith first emerged on the music scene on the Top Rank and HMV labels, but he saw little chart success until Drumbeat came along in 1959.
Faith became an immediate star, with his matinee-idol looks and charismatic screen presence. He was signed to EMI's Parlophone label soon after he began work on Drumbeat. In November of 1959, he cut the single "What Do You Want," which soared to number one on the British charts in the course of a 19-week run. With a pleasing, upbeat arrangement built around pizzicato strings and a sort of peppy variation of Elvis' scowling, mumbling demeanor, Faith's career at this point was closer to teen pop than rock & roll, although his stuff is eminently listenable. His next single, "Poor Me," was a better song and also reached number one, while his third, "Somebody Else's Baby," got to number two. Although hardly cutting-edge rock & roll (and one has to ignore singles like "When Johnny Comes Marching Home"), it was all pleasant, rather reminiscent of Buddy Holly songs like "True Love Ways." The best of his singles was the John Barry co-authored "Made You," which owes a bit to songs like "Nervous Breakdown" -- it also showed what Faith could do with a real, straight-ahead rock & roll number.
He placed six songs in the Top Ten during 1960, and three more in 1961. His string of major hits was pretty much exhausted by the summer of 1962, just before the Beatles and the other Liverpool bands came along and changed the entire musical landscape, but he made one more run into the Top Ten in late 1963 with "The First Time." Listening to this stuff, it's easy to understand why acts like the Beatles, not to mention ballsier, older rock & rollers from Liverpool like Tony Sheridan and the Big Three held performers like Adam Faith in such contempt -- he could be lethally "cute" on novelty songs like "Lonely Pup (In a Christmas Shop)," a number four single over Christmas of 1960, and had no compunction about it.
Despite his shortcomings as a rock & roller, Faith left the post-Beatles era with one major gift in the form of his superb backing band, the Roulettes -- featuring future Argent members Russ Ballard and Bob Henrit -- who recorded some of the best music of the early British Invasion era. Beginning in 1963, they had a separate recording and performing career as well, including a series of superb recordings for EMI (available on BGO Records). Their records with Faith were also exceptionally good, and were among the last of his major hits. In 1965, Faith released his last new album, the concert recording Faith Alive, featuring him and the Roulettes, a surprisingly exciting and unretouched account of their work on stage together. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide

Adam Faith became one of Britain's significant early pop stars. At the time, he was distinctive for his hiccupping glottal stops and exaggerated pronunciation. He did not write his own material, and much of his early success was through partnership with songwriters Les Vandyke and John Barry, whose arrangements were inspired by the pizzicato arrangements for Buddy Holly's "It Doesn't Matter Anymore".
Faith began his musical career in 1957, while working as a film cutter in London in the hope of becoming an actor, singing with and managing a skiffle group, the Worried Men. The group played in Soho coffee bars after work, and became the resident band at The 2i's Coffee Bar, where they appeared on the BBC Television live music programme Six-Five Special. The producer, Jack Good, was impressed by the singer and arranged a solo recording contract with HMV under the name Adam Faith.
His debut record "(Got a) Heartsick Feeling" and "Brother Heartache and Sister Tears", in January 1958, failed to make the charts. Good gave him a part in the stage show of Six-Five Special, along with the John Barry Seven but the show folded after four performances. His second release later that year was a cover of Jerry Lee Lewis's "High School Confidential", backed with the Burt Bacharach and Hal David penned "Country Music Holiday", but this also failed.
Faith returned to work as a film cutter at National Studios at Elstree until March 1959, when Barry invited him to audition for a BBC TV rock and roll show, Drumbeat. The producer, Stewart Morris, gave him a contract for three shows, extended to the full 22-week run. His contract with HMV had ended, and he sang one track, "I Vibrate", on a six-track EP released by the Fontana record label. Barry's manager, Eve Taylor, got him a contract with Top Rank, but his only record there, "Ah, Poor Little Baby"/"Runk Bunk" produced by Tony Hatch, failed to chart due to a lack of publicity caused by a national printing strike.
Despite the failure, Faith was becoming popular through television appearances. He became an actor by taking drama and elocution lessons, and appeared in the film Beat Girl. The script called for Faith to sing songs and as Barry was arranging Faith's recordings and live Drumbeat material, the film company asked him to write the score. This was the beginning of Barry's career in film music.
Faith's success on Drumbeat enabled another recording contract, with Parlophone. His next record in 1959, "What Do You Want?", written by Les Vandyke and produced by Barry and John Burgess, received good reviews in the NME and other papers, as well as being voted a hit on Juke Box Jury. This became his first number one hit in the UK Singles Chart, and his pronunciation of the word 'baby' as 'bay-beh' became a catchphrase.
"What Do You Want?" was the first number one hit for Parlophone.
"What Do You Want?" was a 1959 song, which became a number one hit in the United Kingdom for Adam Faith. It was written by Les Vandyke and produced by John Burgess and arranged by John Barry. It first appeared on the UK Singles Chart on 20 November 1959 and spent 19 weeks there. It was at number one for three weeks, sharing the position for the final week with "What Do You Want to Make Those Eyes at Me For?" by Emile Ford & The Checkmates. It is the shortest song to reach number one in the UK Singles Chart.
"What Do You Want?" was covered by American singers Ersel Hickey in 1959 on Epic Records and Bobby Vee in 1960 on Liberty Records. It was recorded in French by Petula Clark as Moi, Je Préfère l'Amour a Tout Ça in 1959.

"Poor Me" is a single released by the English singer, Adam Faith. On 10 March 1960, it reached number one in the UK Singles Chart, staying there for two weeks
Adam Faith began his musical career in 1957, while working as a film cutter in London in the hope of becoming an actor, singing with and managing a skiffle group, the Worried Men.

LESSON 1 * PART 4 * BOOK 2
Adam & Eve’s Faith and Salvation
Genesis 3:14-24
Genesis 3:14
"And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, (in other words, he had tempted and caused Eve to fall, which in turn led to Adam’s fall) thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field, upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life."
Now verse 15, and this is one of the primary verses in the book of Genesis. Where God speaking to Satan says:
Genesis 3:15
God is going to put an enmity between the forces of Satan and all the powers of darkness and the seed of the woman. Now who is the seed of the woman? Now Galatians chapter 3.
So according to the Bible the seed of the woman is Christ. So beware of that as you study your Bible, that the powers of Satan are constantly hindering the work of God, but also remember that God foretold that it would be that way.
Genesis 3:15b
"…it (the Seed of the woman) shall bruise thy head, and thou (Satan) shall bruise his heel."
Christ literally defeated Satan at the cross. In verse 16 on down we have the curse that was brought on the scene when Adam ate. The curse. The curse. As someone has put it, "When Adam was created, he was human, but the moment Adam sinned the human race became in-human." Can you think of a single specie in all of God’s creation that will torture members of it’s own specie like man will with man? Now let’s begin with verse 16.
Genesis 3:16a
Now let’s read on in verse 17.
Genesis 3:17-18
"And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it; cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life. Now looking at verse 19.
Genesis 3:19a
"In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread,…"
Genesis 3:19b
"…till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."
Now then verse 20 is an interesting verse. Genesis 3:20
"And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living."
Now what does Adam understand? That even though he has sinned, and lost fellowship with God, God must have told him something that he believed, and what was it? So here in verse 20 is the first instance of FAITH, which is taking God at his Word. By faith Adam believed what God said concerning him and the woman, so he named her "the mother of all living." Now then Adam’s faith promoted God to do something. Adam shows that particle of faith that he believed what God said, and God moves in and does what needs to be done in verse 21. So there had to be a sacrifice for Adam and Eve’s sin. So right here with Adam and Eve God institutes animal sacrifice in verse 21. Genesis 3:21
"Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make (Adam and Eve didn’t do this, but rather the LORD God make) coats of skins, and clothed them."
God somehow or other killed the animals, and the blood was shed. "…the LORD God made coats of skins, (that covered their physical nakedness. But then God did something else) and clothed them."
Isaiah 61:10
God’s righteousness!) We’ll start with verse 21, but verse 22 is the one we want to compare with Isaiah chapter 61. Romans 3:21-22
Oh the righteousness of God clothes us, like the young man decked at his wedding or like the Bride decked for her wedding there in Isaiah 61:10, So the righteousness of God is placed upon us, and as I said before so that God doesn’t see you and I, but rather God sees in us as believers the righteousness of Christ that covers us. By believing Paul’s beautiful Gospel! (Romans 2:16) Let’s look at verse 13 & 14.
Now let’s come back to Genesis chapter 3. Let’s look at chapter 3 and verse 22. God has now restored Adam and Eve to fellowship by virtue of his faith and the animal sacrifice.
Genesis 3:22
What if Adam would have been able to partake of the tree of life and live forever in this body of sin? Now verse 23.
Genesis 3:23

I noticed Adam standing off to the side as I was wrapping up a conversation with a friendly Christian couple. While it was not clear if his initial objective was merely curiosity or if he was specifically tasked with keeping an eye on me on behalf of Gateway Fellowship Church, we ended up having a really good talk.
In our shorter, edited version, Adam and I try to work out a definition for faith, and then hash out examples of how faith differs from trust (the link to which is listed above). In this complete, unedited, extended interview, we covered several more topics.
Adam says he has felt the presence of God, and believes because he has seen what the God has done in his life. Adam also believes God can hear his prayers, but praying for one's soul is more important than praying for one's life.
Ultimately, the conversation shifts, and Adam agrees that faith is a component in his life. We then spend the remainder of our talk discussing the difference between trust and faith, including an example about climber dangling from a rope on a foggy mountainside and an invisible purple dragon.
Note: I have to give credit to Tracie Harris for the example of being afraid of getting attacked while walking through the parking lot. She mentioned a variation of this example during an appearance on the 'The Thinking Atheist' podcast.

Mistakes:
Sorry about the multiple analogies, and then jumping back and forth between them. While this is not ideal and gets confusing, that's just the way it played out.
Forgive me for using the word "precipice" (a very steep rock face or cliff, typically a tall one.) instead of the word "ledge" or "outcropping" in our analogy.
Please let me know if you notice any mistakes so that I can address them here for self-improvement.

I Timothy 2:14
"And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression."
So we see Adam was not deceived. In other words Adam was in a totally different state of mind than Eve. Eve was caught in a moment of weakness, and before she even realized what she had done, she had eaten. But then along comes Adam, and he has to decide whether to eat or not. He knew what she has already done, so his decision was based with regard to her, and without regard to the Creator, and he ate willfully, and disobeyed that revealed will of God!
Also in our last lesson we closed with the fact that when Adam sinned, immediately he died spiritually. Now I've put the three circles back on the board as we had a few lessons back, only for illustration purposes. And for those of you who are super critical, I realize that the soul and the spirit are so closely intertwined that we usually think of both of them as the same, but the Scripture does separate the soul and spirit, as well as the body.
Hebrews 4:12a
"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit,..."
So we see man is a makeup of body, soul and spirit. Then we showed that when Adam ate, immediately his spirit died and lost fellowship with his Creator, and his body also began to die. Now Adam didn't die until he was 930 years old, but the moment he ate, the seeds of death entered and he began to die, but remember he immediately died spiritually.

Now in our last lesson we ran out of time to finish our teaching of "how we're chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world." So let's pursue that because we don't like to give people the idea that they don't have a thing to do with it. Oh yes, we do! If you'll turn with me to pick that theme up, to I Peter chapter 1, and let's just drop right in to verse 2. Remember what we were talking about last week, how that Jesus told the twelve, "You have not chosen me, I have chosen you." And He asked Peter the basis of his faith and Peter responded:
Matthew 16:16b
"...Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God."
And what did Jesus say?
Matthew 16:17b
"... flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven."
And then if you'll remember we looked at the seller of purple, Lydia, in the book of Acts, and again it was the Lord who opened her heart and then she attended to the things of salvation that Paul spoke of. Alright, now how does this work? I think I Peter chapter 1, verse 2 probably throws as much light on this whole idea of election and being chosen as any other portion of Scripture.
I Peter 1:2
"Elect (remember the elect of scripture whether it's back in Genesis, in Christ's ministry, in the Church Age, or the elect of the Tribulation, the elect are always the believers) according to the (what's the word?) foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit (the work of the Holy Spirit) unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ; Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied."

Tonight on Adam vs. the Man with Adam Kokesh: Adam has some good news for you tonight: you are not a pirate. In fact, because it is morally wrong to use the force of government to impede the free flow of ideas, you have the RIGHT to copy music, movies, text, software, inventions, and IDEAS! Speaking of ideas worth copying, Adam has best-selling author and President of Sojourners Jim Wallis in studio and Stephan Kinsella, intellectual property rights attorney, joins Adam from Houston Texas to tell you how to beat back the twisted logic of intellectual property. But that won't stop the government from imposing a twisted morality of stifling innovation on you to make you feel bad for copying things that big corporations don't want you to copy. Well tough! Because the internet is here to the rescue!

Scotty Moore & D. J. Fontana on Adam Faith's Radio Show in Glasgow Part Three
This was just after the "Adam Faith" interview when the producer asked to do a separate interview for their local station in Glascow. At least he didn't go over the same questions and had a sense of humor. I suppose this was the official start of our Spring 1999 UK Tour.
