Hi. so I'm a British Asian, does my accent not match my appearance? haha. My accents are pretty crappy, I need to improve on them, also i'm fully aware there...

I interviewed students at The Glasgow Chinese School, based in Stow College in Glasgow's Chinatown. I was interested in exploring how the children perceived themselves and dealt with issues of identity and belonging.
Many of the children are from racially mixed marriages, while others are second or third generation Chinese raised in Glasgow, dealing with a duality of a distinct Chinese and Scottish cultural backgrounds.
I developed this exploration through a short film called 'The British Chinese' that addresses these issues.

The rise of an underground movement in ‘British Asian Sound Systems’ Documentary.
During the ’90s and the early 2000s, the Asian Underground scene ignited in the UK. Second and third generation Asian British youth, yearning for a sense of community and identity, created their own nightlife movement. Combining classic Bhangra with modern dance beats and later, drum & bass, these pioneers created an underground culture that both paid homage to their Southeast Asian heritage and, at the same time, was influenced by the British rave scene happening all around them. This unique blend of traditional Indian and Pakistani music with modern electronic synths was captured in Talvin Singh’s seminal 1997 compilation Anokha — Soundz of the Asian Underground. Two years later, he won the highly-coveted Mercury Prize for his breakthrough debut album OK in 1999.

British Asian is a term used to describe British citizens who descended from mainly South Asia, also known as South Asians in the United Kingdom. In British English, the term 'Asian' usually excludes East Asians (see East Asians in the United Kingdom).
Prior to the formation of the United Kingdom, immigration of South Asian people to England began with the arrival of the East India Company to the Indian subcontinent. This continued during the British Raj and increased in volume after the independence of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka from British rule, chiefly for education and economic pursuits. A major influx of South Asian immigrants, mostly of Indian and Pakistani origin, also took place following the expulsion of Indian communities (then holders of British passports) from Uganda and other East African nations (see African migration to the United Kingdom).
In British English, the word "Asian" is often used to refer to those of South Asian origin, particularly Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis. Clarifying the Definition of Asian. 2005. 1 October 2006. The term generally excludes people of East Asian (such as Chinese, Korean or Japanese) or Southeast Asian origin; they are more likely to be defined by their country of origin, or may instead be grouped under the umbrella term "oriental". This is reflected in the "ethnic group" section of UK census forms and other government paperwork, which treat "Asian" and "Chinese" as separate. This usage contrasts with olga American English, Canadian English, New Zealand English and Australian English, in which "Asian" refers mainly to people with East Asian ancestry.

Idi Amin Dada (c. 1924 – 16 August 2003) was the military dictator and third President of Uganda from 1971 to 1979. Amin joined the British colonial regiment, the King's African Rifles in 1946. Eventually he held the rank of Major General in the post-colonial Ugandan Army and became its Commander before seizing power in the military coup of January 1971, deposing Milton Obote. He later promoted himself to Field Marshal while he was the head of state. While serving in the British Regiment he toured Kenya.
Amin's rule was characterised by gross human rights abuse, political repression, ethnic persecution, extrajudicial killings, nepotism, corruption, and gross economic mismanagement. The number of people killed as a result of his regime is estimated by international observers and human rights groups to range from 100,000 to 500,000. During his years in power, Amin shifted in allegiance from being a pro-Western ruler enjoying considerable Israeli support to being backed by Libya's Muammar al-Gaddafi, the Soviet Union and East Germany.

I interviewed students at The Glasgow Chinese School, based in Stow College in Glasgow's Chinatown. I was interested in exploring how the children perceived themselves and dealt with issues of identity and belonging.
Many of the children are from racially mixed marriages, while others are second or third generation Chinese raised in Glasgow, dealing with a duality of a distinct Chinese and Scottish cultural backgrounds.
I developed this exploration through a short film called 'The British Chinese' that addresses these issues.

Combining classic Bhangra with modern dance beats and later, drum & bass, these pioneers created an underground culture that both paid homage to their Southeast Asian heritage and, at the same time, was influenced by the British rave scene happening all around them. This unique blend of traditional Indian and Pakistani music with modern electronic synths was captured in Talvin Singh’s seminal 1997 compilation Anokha — Soundz of the Asian Underground. Two years later, he won the highly-coveted Mercury Prize for his breakthrough debut album OK in 1999.

It's not always easy for Asian speakers of English to show emotion in their voices. It may be difficult to have the same tonal range that native speakers of English have, due to the English language having a different use of tone to Asian languages such as Mandarin.
In English tone is used to convey feelings. A single word can have many different interpretations, depending on the tone. Not understanding nor applying tone can make the English speech of Asians appear to be without emotion and if monotone, hard to understand.
A monotone voice is not an interesting voice for a native speaker to listen to.
The video explains exercises you can do to bring emotion into your speech.

On April 29th 2015, BBC Asian Network held their second New Music Showcase hosted by Yasser, Kan D Man & DJ Limelight.
BBC Maida Vale is a legendary establishment where so many celebrated greats have performed and recorded since the second world war.
On 29th April 2015, handpicked artists performed to be recorded live by the BBC. This #WideoDiary is a behind the scenes look at what goes into such a performance and a fly-on-the-wall who goes by the name of Desi Circus founder and MD of Asian Music Publishing, Terry Mardi.
Terry Mardi follows and speaks to artists Cold Fever and Hype Hyphen, creators of Desi Reggae as well as Steel Banglez, The 107, Jay Kaydn, Zain, Raphaella, Elshay, TaZzZ, Zack Knight, Rita Morar, Priti Menon and many others backstage to talk about their experience as well as show support to the 'new skool' of predominantly 'urban'' music creators in the UK from the British Asian community.
In this PREFACE WIDEO, Terry Mardi offers a heartfelt public address about how the British Asian Music Scene may be dying a slow death and wonders if the BBC Asian Network 'New Music Showcase' can help save it? He hopes the question may inspire some entrepreneurial solutions from the community to aid support of the musicians and the music. Terry Mardi was born and raised in the UK yet his businesses are mostly global and his company AMP operates within Asia, fruitfully. Despite this, he hopes to assist his birthplace where possible.

Comedian Romesh Ranganathan considers himself British through and through. He grew up in Horsham, doesn't speak a word of Tamil, doesn't know any of his relatives, has no idea about his cultural heritage and has almost zero desire to go to Sri Lanka. Like thousands of other British children of immigrants, he knows very little about the land where his parents came from. As his mother Shanthi says - he's a coconut. Sri Lankan on the outside but British on the inside.
Now Shanthi wants her son to connect to his roots - so she's decided to change all that by sending Romesh on an odyssey around the motherland. Not that he's that happy about it.
Shanthi uses Romesh's trip to try to settle a long standing bugbear - trying to get him to lose weight. She has entrusted this task to his Uncle Rubaharan, who introduces him to the ancient Sri Lankan martial art known as angapora, which sees Romesh being put through his paces by a 14-year-old martial arts expert. Whilst in the area, Romesh also visits his mother's home which has been taken over by a religious sect, but this is mere respite between having a traditional Ayurvedic enema and joining the hunter-gatherer tribe of the Veddas, to go on one of the most bizarre hunts ever witnessed.

THE ASIAN COLLECTION is a new 50-track compilation of the best Bollywood, Bhangra and UK Asian classics released over the past few years. DJ Nihal - BBC Asian Network talkshow host and long-term champion of the UK Asian music scene - was the man responsible for putting the compilation together.
Bombay Funkadelic's DJ Shai Guy got the chance to meet up with him, and get his thoughts on what "British Asian" music is - whether it needs a label, why it doesn't encompass rock music, whether it will ever stand a chance against the might of Bollywood and how best to break into the scene as a British-Asian artist.
