Poland Rediscovered: Krakow, Auschwitz, and Warsaw

The Warsaw Ghetto was established by the German Governor-General Hans Frank on October 16, 1940. Frank ordered Jews in Warsaw and its suburbs rounded up and herded into the Ghetto. At this time, the population in the Ghetto was estimated to be 400,000 people, about 30% of the population of Warsaw; however, the size of the Ghetto was about 2.4% of the size of Warsaw.

You'll want to set aside a good chunk of time to visit some of the fascinating museums Warsaw has to offer in order to better understand its complicated history. 25 Things to do in Warsaw, Poland | Top Attractions Tourism Guide Video Transcript:
Well hello and welcome to Warszawa. This week we are exploring the Polish capital. We've already been here a few days and it has been amazing. It has been such a pleasant surprise and unlike any part of Europe we've traveled in so far. So yeah, this week we're going to be highlighting 25 things to do around the city and we're excited to show you what it is all about.
We came to Warsaw with little to no expectations and the city completely surprised us. Our week in the capital was spent sampling Polish cuisine, learning about the city's past through museums and historical tours, and also dabbling in a bit of the nightlife. Warsaw is quickly rising through the ranks and we think it won't be long before travellers are flocking en masse. So if you're planning a trip to Poland, don't skip over the capital because there is more to Warsaw than meets the eye.
This is part of our Travel in Poland series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Polish culture, Polish arts, Polish foods, Polish religion, Polish cuisine and Polish people.

- ENG: In early August I spent a week in the beautiful city Warsaw, the capital of Poland, to made these amazing videos. With up to 43 ° Celsius, it was very hard for me to carry the heavy camera equipment throughout the day. Nevertheless I had a lot of fun in Poland, the people there, are much more open and more hospitable than in my home, Munich. A lot of people ask me, what i filmed there and from which TV station I'm coming. Mostly I had to grin, because I'm really just someone who wants to show the people a great city. After I had told, that I will make a film about the city, most of the people responded with "what is here to film?".
Finally, I had lot of fun there and I've made a lot of great videos. Here I would like to say THANK YOU to the guys from SkyConcept who helped out with great aerial views of Warsaw! https://www.youtube.com/user/skyconceptTV

Wiecie że mówię o was. Gdyby nie wy umarłbym z nudów ;)
Enjoy!

WARSAW 24H is the final effect of the timelapse project I started in November 2012. I wanted to show Warsaw as it can be seen from its highest skyscrapers - as a majestic, beautiful city - not the one we get used to every day. I wanted to show Warsaw the way I love it.
During the production I was able to visit rooftops of buildings such as Cosmopolitan, Złota 44, Marriott, Millenium Plaza, Rondo 1, and the tower of the st. Augustine's Church. And also some other places. I would like to thank all the people who were willing to help me, even though in some cases I didn't manage to use what they kindly offered.
I would also like to thank Sebastian Nibisz who allowed me to use his program for post-processing HDR photos - SNS HDR PRO, http://www.sns-hdr.com/. I strongly recommend his work.
// edit: The movie is shown on the internet as the 'HDR timelapse' which is not true :) The fact I could use the program for my work doesn't mean i always did it...
And last but not least, my gratitude goes to all those on whom I could rely on during the shooting. You were my company and contributors. If it hadn't been for you, I would have died of boredom ;)

The construction of the ghetto wall started on April 1, 1940, but the Germans closed the Warsaw Ghetto to the outside world on November 16 that year. The wall was typically 3 m (9.8 ft) high and topped with barbed wire. Escapees could be shot on sight. The borders of the ghetto changed many times through the next years.
The ghetto was divided by Chłodna Street, which due to its importance (Warsaw's major street leading to the east) was excluded from it. The area south of Chłodna was known as "Small Ghetto", while the area north of this street -- "Large Ghetto". Those two parts were connected by Żelazna Street (special gate was built at its intersection with Chłodna Street). In January 1942 a wooden footbridge, which after the war became one of the symbols of the Holocaust, was built there to ease pedestrian traffic. The first commissioner of the Warsaw ghetto was his chief organizer SA-Standartenführer Waldemar Schön. He was succeeded in May 1941 by Heinz Auerswald.
On January 18, 1943, after almost four months without any deportations, the Germans suddenly entered the Warsaw ghetto intent upon a further deportation. Within hours, some 600 Jews were shot and 5,000 others rounded up.
The Germans expected no resistance, but preparations to resist had been going on since the previous autumn. The first instances of Jewish armed resistance began that day. The Jewish fighters had some success: the expulsion stopped after four days and the ŻOB and ŻZW resistance organizations took control of the Ghetto, building shelters and fighting posts and operating against Jewish collaborators.
The final battle started on the eve of Passover of April 19, 1943, when a Nazi force consisting of several thousand troops entered the ghetto. After initial setbacks, the Germans under the field command of Jürgen Stroop systematically burned and blew up the ghetto buildings, block by block, rounding up or murdering anybody they could capture. Significant resistance ended on April 28, and the Nazi operation officially ended in mid-May, symbolically culminating with the demolition of the Great Synagogue of Warsaw on May 16. According to the official report, at least 56,065 people were killed on the spot or deported to German Nazi concentration and death camps, most of them to Treblinka.

This is a rare recording of Interzone, from the self-titled album Warsaw, released in 1994. The song was based on the backing track of the song "Keep On Keepin' On," to which the band added their own lyrics. The result was a song distinctively their own.
Recorded at Arrow Studios, Manchester, England, May 1978.
There are few clips of the early Joy Division when they were known as Warsaw. I have uploaded all of the songs from the album with no copyright infringment intended. I make no profit from uploading these clips, and they are available purely for enjoyment and educational use.

Warsaw is a large and sprawling city of more than 1.7 million people that is split into somewhat uneven halves by the Wisła (Vistula) River. Most everything of interest to visitors is on the western side of the river around the modern financial district. Its centrepiece is the landmark Palace of Culture and Science (Pałac Kultury i Nauki), a Socialist-Realist confection which can be seen from virtually anywhere in the city.
The epicentre of Warsaw for visitors is the so-called Royal Route (Trakt Królewski), which runs north-south from the New and Old Towns, past the fashionable shops of Nowy Świat, the palaces that survived the war and the royal gardens of Łazienki Park, before reaching Wilanów Palace to the south of the city centre.
Warsaw's striking Old Town may look like it dates back several centuries but the old gal has barely reached middle age. The painstakingly rebuilt area was awarded a listing on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1980. Unmissable attractions in and around the Old Town include the Royal Castle, St John's Cathedral and the Citadel. Farther afield, make sure you visit the Warsaw Rising Museum for the story of the courageous men and women who rose up against their occupiers in WWII as well as the Palace of Culture and Science for the views.
No surprising for a city that was essentially rebuilt from the ground up after WWII, Warsaw offers an inordinate amount of green space, with leafy parks where rowing boats cruise past outdoor cafés, during the summer, and free classical concerts attract crowds in a scene far removed from the dull Communist-era images of Warsaw. And don't miss the palaces and other historical and cultural buildings in the city's splendid Łazienki and Wilanów Parks.
Warsaw's nightlife is one of the best in Eastern Europe today, with a multitude of bars and clubs scattered across the city as well as a generous dose of more highbrow entertainment such as classical music concerts and opera. Whatever you do, don't leave town without sampling the tipple of choice here in these parts: wódka (vodka). It comes in a myriad of flavours and hues - from myśliwska (`hunter's vodka'), which tastes a bit like gin, and wiśniówka (flavoured with cherries) to pieprzówka (pepper) and the famous żubrówka ('bison vodka'), which is flavoured with grass and favoured by the beasties in Bialowieza National Park). Poles traditionally drank vodka neat -- never in cocktails.
The dining options have improved no end in Warsaw, with international cuisine regularly featured alongside Polish standards. And Polish cuisine has also undergone some major transformations, lightening up old favourites with less fat and employing fresher ingredients.

TRAVEL VLOG IN WARSAW, TRAVEL IN WARSAW, TRIP IN WARSAW.. WARSAW. POLAND TRAVEL.
ABOUT WARSAW:
Warsaw (Polish: Warszawa [varˈʂava] ( listen); see also other names), is the capital and largest city of Poland. It is located on the Vistula River, in east-central Poland, roughly 260 kilometres (160 mi) from the Baltic Sea and 300 kilometres (190 mi) from the Carpathian Mountains. Its population is estimated at 1.740 million residents within a greater metropolitan area of 2.666 million residents, which makes Warsaw the 9th most populous capital city in the European Union.[2][3][4] The city limits cover 516.9 square kilometres (199.6 sq mi), while the metropolitan area covers 6,100.43 square kilometres (2,355.39 sq mi).[5]
In 2012 Warsaw was ranked as the 32nd most liveable city in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit.[6] It was also ranked as one of the most liveable cities in Central and Eastern Europe. Today Warsaw is considered an Alpha– global city, a major international tourist destination and a significant cultural, political and economic hub.[7][8][9] Warsaw's economy, by a wide variety of industries, is characterised by FMCG manufacturing, metal processing, steel and electronic manufacturing and food processing. The city is a significant centre of research and development, BPO, ITO, as well as Polish media industry. The Warsaw Stock Exchange is one of the largest and most important in Central Europe. Frontex, the European Union agency for external border security, is headquartered in Warsaw. Unusually for a European city, Warsaw has a prominent skyline with many skyscrapers and high-rise buildings in the city center. Warsaw is one of only a few cities in the European Union that have such a skyline, together with Frankfurt, London and Paris.
The first historical reference to Warsaw dates back to the year 1313, when initially Kraków served as the Polish capital city. Due to its central location between the Commonwealth's capitals of Kraków and Vilnius, Warsaw became the capital of the Commonwealth and the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland when King Sigismund III Vasa moved his court from Kraków to Warsaw in 1596.[10] After the Third Partition of Poland in 1795, Warsaw was incorporated into the Kingdom of Prussia. In 1806 during the Napoleonic Wars, the city became the official capital of the Grand Duchy of Warsaw, a puppet state of the First French Empire created by Napoleon Bonaparte. With accordance to the decision of the Congress of Vienna, Warsaw in 1815 was annexed by the Russian Empire and became part of the "Congress Kingdom". Only in 1918 it regained independence from the foreign rule and emerged as a new capital of the independent Republic of Poland. Along with the German invasion in 1939, the massacre of the Jewish population and deportations to concentration camps led to the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto in 1943 and to a major and devastating Warsaw Uprising between August and October 1944. For this Warsaw gained the title of the "phoenix city" because it has survived so many wars, conflicts and invasions throughout its long history. Most notably, the city had to be painstakingly rebuilt after the extensive damage it suffered in World War II, during which 85% of its buildings were destroyed.[11][12] On 9 November 1940 the city was awarded Poland's highest military decoration for heroism, the Virtuti Militari, during the Siege of Warsaw (1939).[13][14]
The city is the seat of a Roman Catholic archdiocese (left bank) and diocese (right bank of the Vistula), and possesses various universities, most notably the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Warsaw University, an opera house, theatres, museums, libraries and monuments. The historic city centre of Warsaw with its picturesque Old Town in 1980 was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other main architectural attractions include the Castle Square with the Royal Castle and the iconic King Sigismund's Column, St. John's Cathedral, Market Square, palaces, churches and mansions all displaying a richness of colour and architectural detail. Buildings are representatives of nearly every European architectural style and historical period. Warsaw has wonderful examples of architecture from the gothic, renaissance, baroque and neoclassical periods and around a quarter of the city is filled with grand parks and royal gardens.

Warsaw, Poland Travel Guide - See Attractions - Travel Poland 2015

Your trip to Moscow, Russia is bound to be a special one. From the multicolored spires of St. Basil’s Cathedral to the sturdy red walls of the Kremlin, there is much to see and do in this stunning city.
Named after the Moskva River—which flows through the city—Moscow has long been at the forefront of the creative world. Tour Moscow to follow in the footsteps of Tolstoy and Chekhov, among others, and join in the sense of pride Russia feels for its literary tradition. Moscow has named a number of its parks and open spaces after its poets and authors, so take a break at the fountain in Pushkin Square, or rest beneath the leafy trees in Gorky Park. When you’ve gotten your fill of literary splendor, head to the Memorial Museum of Cosmonauts, where you can learn about the Soviet Union’s efforts to reach the stars and the epic space race that lasted from 1955 to 1972.
Moscow is a city of creativity and innovation, but is also very much aware of its own history; as such, a haunting part of any Moscow sightseeing is a visit to the Fallen Monument Park. After the fall of the Soviet Union, countless statues and monuments were removed from their pedestals and moved to this park. Over the years, more modern artwork and sculptures have been added, turning the park into a strange, yet peaceful graveyard of former icons.

http://www.aswetravel.com/warsaw-poland-travel-video/ - Warsaw, Poland. As We Travel Europe
We spent the whole day on a train going to Warsaw, but we finally arrived. It’s about 8 o’clock at night, so we’re going to go to the hostel, relax, and then tomorrow we’re going to explore the city. We’re in Warsaw, the capital city of Poland. It’s rainy, it’s pretty miserable, but we’re going to explore anyway. Warsaw is known as the Phoenix city, because just like the Phoenix rises from the ashes, so has Warsaw. We’re in the Old Town, A UNESCO Heritage site dating back to the 13th Century. The buildings here are not actually that old. During World War II, the Nazis systematically destroyed everything. Today, the Old Town has been rebuilt to look the way it did before the war. Let’s go and have a look around. We’ve been walking through the Old Town and came across this square, and it really reminds me of the Grand Place in Brussels, and I loved it there. And I also love, I think this is really amazing, the colors and the designs on the buildings. And we saw some pictures of what this square looked like after World War II, and everything was destroyed. And so to see now how they’ve rebuilt it, this looks absolutely amazing I think.
We’re at one of the most important monuments here in Warsaw. It’s in memory of the Jewish uprising against the Nazis in the second world war. What happened was that the Nazi’s came here to collect more Jews to send off to concentration camps, but the Jews realized this and decided to fight back. They spent over four days defending themselves against the Nazis, until unfortunately the Nazis sent in thousands more troops and wiped out everything. Here is another statue from the uprising of Warsaw. It’s of a kid wearing an adult’s helmet, holding a rifle in his hands. It’s so sad to think that even the kids had to defend themselves from the Nazis. We’ve been walking around Warsaw seeing how the city’s been rebuilt, and now we’re standing on Próżna Street, which used to be part of the Jewish ghetto. Today, it’s one of the few places where the buildings are still standing from World War II, and they’re really rundown. But it’s amazing to be able to see what it was like back then, and they’ve put up these photos on the walls of the people who used to live there. We found a little place that specializes in a traditional Polish dish called pierogis, Polish dumplings. We ordered a plate and see what they taste like. Really interesting. I think this one is lentils. Well, this is a perfect way to end our day here in Warsaw, and tomorrow, we’re off to Berlin.

Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City, on the southern tip of Vietnam, is one of South East Asia’s emerging boom cities. Still affectionately known by many as Saigon, this is Vietnam’s largest city and its economic engine room.
Ho Chi Minh City has an irrepressible soul and an entrepreneurial energy that hums day and night. Despite almost a century of colonialism and brutal conflict, today this city is renowned for its warm hospitality, which even extends to former foes. A youthful enthusiasm flows through this city, just like the stream of scooters, motorbikes and cars that flow endlessly through its chaotic streets.
In Ho Chi Minh City, it feels as though the future has arrived… and yet the past is never far away. Wide boulevards built during the French colonial era are lined with cutting edge skyscrapers, while jasmine scented temples gently rub shoulders with chic rooftop bars
More than 9 million people call Ho Chi Minh City home and the dynamic energy of its streets is part of its charm. The city is divided into a series of numbered districts and District One is where almost all of the city’s main attractions can be found.
As the sun goes down, find yourself a seat at one of Ho Chi Minh City’s famous rooftop bars, a perfect way to soak up the buzz of the city.
Dynamic, chaotic and energizing. Ho Chi Minh city may have burst onto the world stage as a battle zone but today, there is no better destination to plug in to the pulse of 21st century Asia.

Driving down a boulevard with an ongoing explanation of everything I was seeing, I was inspired to pull out my little camera and make a video clip to share with you the delight of having your own private tour guide. Imagine hiring a guide like Hubert with a car for $160 for 5 hours. This clip finishes as we park at Ghetto Uprising Square to see the memorial about that horrific chapter in Polish history, and a sparkling new museum celebrating Polish Jews. And with Hubert as my guide, I had the best teacher a traveler could want.

Warsaw - Poland Travel Guide, Tourism http://goo.gl/HmkEIN
Hundreds of new shops have sprung up all over Warsaw since the political transformations of 1989. There are also licensed and illegal street vendors that offer wares ranging from cloth napkins, wooden sculptures, cooking pots and freshly picked mushrooms.
Key areas:
The main shopping streets areas lie in the maze of streets between the Palace of Culture and Science and swanky Ulica Nowy Świat. The eastern end of Aleje Jerozolimskie and the southern part of Ulica Marszałkowska are also god bets. Check out the restored Ulica Chmielna too.
Markets:
With the demise of one of Europe's largest flea markets, known locally as the Russian Market, Warsaw's market scene is a little bare. There are still a few spots worth visiting, however, such as Bazar na Kole (Ulica Obozowa) in the western reaches of the city, which has mountains of junk and antiques to sift through, ranging from CDs and old postcards to farm implements and WWII relics.
Shopping centres:
Shopping arcades, both in and outside of Warsaw, have become very popular, including Galeria Centrum, Ulica Marszalkowska 104/122, the biggest department store in the capital; Arkadia, Aleja Jana Pawla II 82; and the very central Złote Tarasy, Ulica Złota 59. These malls and stores have both national and internationally known brands including H&M;, Levi's and Zara, and often in-house cinemas and restaurants.
Opening hours:
Shops in Warsaw are generally open Monday to Friday 1000/1100-1800/2000 and Saturday 1000-1300/1600. Usually open seven days a week, Warsaw's shopping centres and hypermarkets are the best places to stock up on Polish staples - such as pickled herring, preserved meats and, last but not least, vodka.
Souvenirs:
More than any thing else, arts and crafts are the main things to shop for on a visit to Warsaw. Particularly popular items that are widely available include glass and enamelware, hand-woven rugs, silverware, jewellery made with silver, dolls in regional costumes, woodcarvings and clay and metal sculptures.
Probably the best spots in Warsaw for souvenir hunting are in the Old Town, among the colourful facades and artists' stalls. But the nationwide chain Cepelia, with four branches in the capital, including one at Ulica Marszałkowska 99/101, is a good place to start - its shops stock a good range of local handicrafts. Another much-loved item available widely is amber from the Baltic Sea. This can be sold in many forms, from large lumps to exquisitely carved necklaces. For art, bric-a-brac, curios and the odd real antique check out the chain of shops called Desa Unicum; its most central outlet is at Ulica Marszałkowska 34/50. Bear in mind that the export of anything produced up until the end of WW11 in 1945 is strictly controlled (though the people at Desa Unicum are very familiar with the procedures and will help with the necessary paperwork).
Tax information:
Tax-free shopping in Warsaw is available to non-EU residents spending a minimum of €175 or equivalent in one transaction at participating outlets. Cash refunds are given out at airports on presentation of the tax free documents.

Warsaw - Poland Travel Guide, Tourism http://goo.gl/HmkEIN
Warsaw has become the epicurean epicentre of Poland inrecent years, and the city now offers an assortment of cuisines to suit all budgets, tastes and objectives. And whether the point is just lounging, power-brokering, romancing or delighting in something gastronomically unique, you'll find it all here.
Note that there is a whole lot more to polish food than just kielbasa (Polish sausage) and sauerkraut! Polish cuisine is rich in meat and game, thick soups and sauces proliferate, and potatoes and dumplings are abundant. Every meal in Poland begins with soup such as barszcz, a red beetroot soup. Be sure to try pierogi - 'Polish ravioli' - stuffed with a whole range of fillings.. They are usually boiled and then served doused in melted butter. Another speciality is gołąbki, cabbage leaves stuffed with beef, onion and rice and baked in tomato sauce.
If you need a quick bite and don't want to sit down, try a zapiekanka, a 'Polish pizza' made up of half a stale baguette split lengthwise and topped with melted cheese, chopped mushrooms and ketchup and best (or only) eaten after a heavy night on the town.
The Warsaw restaurants below have been grouped into three pricing categories:
Expensive (over ZL120)
Moderate (ZL40 to ZL120)
Cheap (up to ZL40)
These prices are based on an average three-course meal for one person. Tax is usually included in the price of the food and gratuity should be included at your discretion; 10% is adequate.
Gessler Restauracja U Kucharzy
Price: Expensive
One of Warsaw's finest restaurants and dating back to the year before WWII broke out, Gessler Restauracja U Kucharzy serves peerless traditional Polish dishes and international favourites in a delightful restaurant set inside the kitchen of an elegant old hotel. Dress is smart and dining quite formal in the evening. For a more relaxed meal, come at lunch or on Sunday when there is a demonstration of noodle-making.
Address: Ulica Ossolińskich 7., Warsaw, Poland
Boathouse
Price: Expensive
This highly rated Warsaw restaurant is pleasantly placed on the banks of the Vistula River north of the Old Town. Its nautical theme extends not only to the décor but also the menu, where the range of Mediterranean-style dishes leans heavily in the direction of Italian cuisine. In summer there's no better place to be than on the Boathouse's large terrace, with a seafood platter, glass of wine and live jazz in the background.
Address: Wał Miedzeszyński 389a, Warsaw, Poland
Roma
Price: Moderate
An intimate space with only nine tables, Roma delights customers with fresh pasta and meat dishes. In spite of the bijou cosy space and green plants in the big window, the atmosphere is more conducive to laughter and fun than a romantic evening out. There are two other Romas in Warsaw, but this was the first (dating back to 1988) and it's the best. Reservations strongly suggested.
Address: Ulica Grottgera 2, Warsaw, Poland
Warsaw Tortilla Factory
Price: Moderate
What started as a mission to fill a gaping culinary hole in the late 990s resulted in a Tex-Mex Warsaw institution, beloved by expats and locals alike. The tortillas are indeed authentic -- though made in Poland - and the burritos are both filling and scrumptious. Informal and friendly setting. It's likely to be the only place in Warsaw where you can choose how spicy you want your hot sauce to be.
Address: Ulica Wilcza 46, Warsaw, Poland
Krokiecik
Price: Cheap
The tradition of 'milk bars' ( bar mleczny ) in Poland is fading slowly, as it's no longer easy for the government to subsidise cheap food in prime locations that could make a lot more money. That said, places like Krokiecik fill in the gap, as it's best considered a tasty, clean, bright and modern 'milk bar', in spite of being privately owned. Self-service allows you to choose from an array of home-cooked Polish food.
Address: Ulica Zgoda 1, Warsaw, Poland
Coffee Karma
Price: Cheap
This popular café overlooks Warsaw's circular Plac Zbawiciela, one of the few remnants of Socialist architecture extant in the city. Its coffee is strong, its smoothies creamy and thick, and its light snacks run the gamut from healthy sandwiches to home-made cakes and cookies. Take a seat inside on winter days or grab a table outdoors in the warm summer months.
Address: Plac Zbawiciela 3/5, Warsaw, Poland

Warsaw - Poland Travel Guide, Tourism http://goo.gl/HmkEIN
Public transport:
The Municipal Transport Board - ZTM operates the bus and tram network, connecting all parts of Warsaw, as well as the single metro running north-south (a second east-west line will open in 2013). Night buses converge on Ulica Emilii Plater, next to the Palace of Culture and Science.
Tickets, valid for all modes of transport, are available at Ruch and Relay kiosks, post offices and some shops and hotels. It is also possible to purchase tickets on board buses, but a surcharge will apply. With every change of vehicle, a new ticket must be punched in the metal boxes inside the bus or tram, or before entering the platform on the underground.
One-day passes are valid for 24 hours after you first punch the ticket. Three- and seven-day passes are also available. Students with an ISIC get a 50% discount and children under seven years of age travel free. Pickpockets operate on some routes (especially bus 175 to and from the airport).
Taxis:
Taxis in Warsaw are metered and can be hailed on the street, although fares are usually cheaper if the taxi is ordered by telephone. Reliable firms include MPT Radio Taxi (tel: 022 19 191), Halo Taxi (tel: 022 19 623) and Super Taxi (tel: 022 19 622). Unofficial taxis should be avoided; only use a taxi with the telephone number displayed on the top. Tipping is usually around 10% of the fare.
Driving:
In the past decade, traffic congestion in Warsaw has increased dramatically. Many of the city's drivers travel at high speeds and perform dangerous overtaking manoeuvres, which may trouble nervous visitors.
The lack of a ring road means that traffic goes straight through the heart of the city, worsening congestion problems in the city centre. A variety of plans are underway but these are largely dependent on adequate investment. However, improvements have materialised, including the building of additional bridges.
Be mindful of tramway lines when driving as the tracks are not always on a separate road area. At red lights, a small green arrow indicates that it is permissible to turn right, however, priority must be given to cross traffic. At intersections without lights, traffic must stop for pedestrians once they have begun to cross at zebra crossings.
Paid street parking is in effect and there are some underground car parks in the city centre. There is a car park under the Silver Screen multiplex (also known as the Europlex building) on Ulica Pulawska 17. There is also 24-hour parking around the Palace of Culture and Science.
Car hire:
Drivers must be at least 21 or even 23 years old (depending on the company). There is no mandatory insurance, although collision damage waiver is advised. The major car hire providers in Warsaw are Avis Budget and Europcar.
Bicycle hire:
Warsaw is a flat city and has some wonderful cycling paths especially along the Vistula River, but beware that drivers are not supportive of cyclists sharing the road with them.

Muzeum Pawilon-X (Block 10 Museum)
Housed in the Citadel, a solid 19th-century fortress northwest of the Old Town and overlooking the Vistula, this Warsaw museum was once used as a prison for political enemies of the Russian czars. The lucky inmates were shipped to labour camps in Siberia; the less fortunate were executed at Brama Straceń (Gate of Execution) on the prison grounds. The original cells are still standing and labelled with some of the prison's more famous residents, and paintings by Alexander Sochaczewski, a former inmate transported to Siberia with 20,000 other anti-Russian insurgents in the mid-19th century, adorn the walls.
Opening Times: Wed-Sun 0900-1600.
Admission Fees: Yes
Disabled Access: Yes
Unesco: No
Address: Ulica Skazańców 25, Warsaw, Poland
Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego (Warsaw Rising Museum)
The Warsaw Rising Museum is a must-see for those with any interest in history and tales of bravery and self-sacrifice. In order to get a taste of what life in Warsaw must have been like for Varsovians during WWII, this thoroughly comprehensive museum shows examples of how residents resisted the German forces through film footage, photographs, recorded interviews, life-size dioramas, soundscapes and informative plaques, written in both Polish and English. Cityscape pictures pinpointing the handful of buildings that survived WWII are located on the museum's elevated viewing platform; they are a grim reminder of the destruction wrought by the Nazis on Warsaw.
Opening Times: Mon, Wed and Fri 0800-1800, Thurs 0800-2000, Sat-Sun 1000-1800.
Admission Fees: Yes
Disabled Access: Yes
Unesco: No
Address: Ulica Przyokopowej 28, Warsaw, Poland
Muzeum Więzienia Pawiak (Pawiak Prison Museum)
This eerie old prison symbolises the oppression that has dogged Warsaw over the last two centuries. Originally built in 1839 at the order of the czar, the prison counted among its inmates many victims of the Nazi reign of terror from 1939 to1944, when it served as the largest political prison in Poland. A third of the estimated 100,000 detainees never made it out alive. The Nazis tried to dynamite the evidence of their crimes as they fled but Pawiak and its exhibits stand as a testament to Warsaw's seemingly endless ability to suffer and survive.
Opening Times: Wed and Fri 0900-1700, Thurs and Sat 0900-1600, Sun 1000-1600.
Admission Fees: Yes
Disabled Access: Yes
Unesco: No
Address: Ulica Dzielna 24/26, Warsaw, Poland
Muzeum Narodowe w Warszawie (National Museum in Warsaw)
The National Museum's impressive collection of artworks and other items dates from ancient times to the present day and total some 800,000 pieces. Highlights include Jan Matejko's monumental Battle of Grunwald (1878), which celebrates the Polish victory over the Teutonic Knights in 1410, and the Faras Collection of early Christian and Egyptian art, which is unique in Europe. The collection of medieval art is also remarkable -- if somewhat gruesome in parts. Unusually, there are also galleries of Polish and European decorative arts. Frequent temporary exhibitions bring prized international works (from Andy Warhol to Caravaggio) to Warsaw.
Opening Times: Tues-Thurs, Sat-Sun 1200-1800, Fri 1200-2000.
Admission Fees: Yes (free on Tuesdays)
Disabled Access: Yes
Unesco: No
Address: Aleje Jerozolimskie 3, Warsaw, Poland
Park Łazienkowski (Łazienki Park)
This splendid park contains a number of palaces as well as the Chopin Monument, where the annual Chopin Festival is held each summer, with free concert recitals in the park twice on Sunday afternoon from mid-May to September) set within extensive 18th-century gardens. Pałac na Wyspie (Palace on the Water) is best viewed from near the monument to Jan Sobiewski, on the bridge where Ulica Agrykola crosses the water. Dating from 1624, Zamek Ujazdowski (Ujazdowski Castle) now houses the Centre for Contemporary Art. The 1764 Pałac Belweder (Belvedere Palace) was of the residence of Poland's presidents until 1994.
Opening Times: Most museums are open Tues-Sun 0900-1600; park open daily from 0800 until sunset.

The collection of medieval art is also remarkable -- if somewhat gruesome in parts. Unusually, there are also galleries of Polish and European decorative arts. Warsaw tours
Boat tours
Warsaw Adventure offers a pleasant and relaxing cruise on the Vistula River between May and September. The river is a great place from which to see the sights while sipping a beer. Expect to meet the symbol of Warsaw -- the mermaid -- while on board.
Bus tours
Mazurkas Travel and Warsaw City Tours offer three-hour tours of the main sights, including the Old Town and Royal Route, sometimes with stops at Wilanów Palace or the Royal Castle. Pick up for tours is from a variety of city hotels. Do-it-yourself tour son public transport include bus 180, operating between Powązki Cemetery and Wilanów, and bus 100, which passes by the Old Town, Citadel and Warsaw Rising Museum.
Driving tours
Visitors can take a trip around the Old Town in dorozki, a horse-drawn hackney cab. These are run by individuals, licensed by the city, and wait for passengers at the Old Town Square. An outfit with the unusual name of the Workshop of Unusual Travels - PiPiN for short - offers vintage car and bicycle tours of Warsaw's major sites as well as some of its lesser-known spots off the beaten track.
Walking tours
Trakt Guide and Travel Agency offers personalised English-speaking tour guides, while Our Roots specialises in tours of the city's Jewish sites. These tours usually last between four and five hours and are by no means cheap. But they allow visitors to design their own tailor-made tours, with stops at attractions and site visits of special interest to them.
Excursions from Warsaw
Kampinoski Park Narodowy (Kampinoski National Park)
Kampinoski National Park, with walking trails, education centre and abundant wildlife, begins at Warsaw's northwestern border and stretches west for about 40km (25 miles). One of its major features is its inland sand dunes, which stand in stark contrast to the surrounding peat bogs. The park is open from dawn to dusk and admission is free. Reach it by bus from the central station, Warszawa Zachodnia, Aleje Jerozolimskie 144.
Toruń
This UNESCO World Heritage walled medieval town is where the 16th century astronomer and mathematician Mikolaj Kopernik (Copernicus) was born. Picturesque pathways along the Vistula River lead to the ruins of the 13th-century castle of the Teutonic Knights; the gothic townhouse where Copernicus was born is located at Ulica Kopernika 17. The city is 227km (141 miles) northwest of Warsaw and can be reached by train from Warszawa Centralna station in three hours.
Zelazowa Wola
This tiny village 54km (34 miles) west of Warsaw is where the great composer Frédéric Chopin was born in 1810. A museum dedicated to him is located in his family's manor house. Żelazowa Wola is located inside Kampinoski National Park and can be reached by bus from the main station, Warszawa Zachodnia, Aleje Jerozolimskie 144. Both Mazurkas Travel and Polish Landscape offer day trips here from the major hotels in Warsaw.
Łódź
This somewhat gritty city-- it's pronounced `wooch - located 140km (87 miles) southwest of Warsaw, hides a treasure trove of palatial mansions, art nouveau public buildings and museums. By all means, visit the vanguard art galleries but the Central Museum of Textiles in an early 19th-century spinning mill is where the city's heart lies and the Jewish Quarter is worth a stroll around. Frequent trains form Warsaw complete the journey between 2-12 hours.

Warsaw - Poland Travel Guide, Tourism http://goo.gl/HmkEIN
As Warsaw has become increasingly tourist friendly over the years, it has made allowances for various travellers by opening several budget and mid-range hotels, thereby completing the range between 5-star travel and student hostels. Please note that, with the exception of the lower budget hotels and hostels, prices for rooms are generally usually quoted in euros.
The Warsaw hotels below have been grouped into three pricing categories:
Luxury (over €160)
Moderate (€60 to €160)
Cheap (up to €60)
These prices are based on the lowest standard rates for a double room, excluding taxes and excluding breakfast, unless otherwise specified.
Mamaison Hotel Le Regina Warsaw
Mamaison Hotel Le Regina Warsaw is a cut above the competition. Located just north of the Old Town in a quiet neighbourhood, it's housed in a gorgeous 18th-century palace and filled with period furniture. But the hotel is modern where it counts, with sparkling new bathrooms and Wi-Fi connection throughout. Rooms are bright, breezy and decorated in eye-catching chocolate and beige.
Le Méridien Bristol
Dating back to 1899 and just a few minutes' walk from the Old Town Square, this member of the Leading Hotels of the World retains its old-world ambience and style remarkably well. The rooms are decorated in muted tones with period-style wooden furniture and benefit from sweeping high ceilings. The lobby contains several boutiques, a cigar store and a newsagent. The Marconi Restaurant, one of the hotel's two restaurants, offers a delicious all-you-can-eat Sunday brunch, while the hotel's super café serves exquisite desserts.
Radissson Blu Centrum Hotel Warsaw
The rooms at this top-class hotel offer a choice of three styles of décor ranging from `Maritime' and `Scandinavian' to `Italian'. Each style differs through its colour scheme, furniture and layout. The Italian style is most whimsical. Staff are accommodating, and there's a first-rate fitness centre in the basement, featuring a pool, fitness machines plus massage and beauty services.
Harenda Hotel
A well-priced accommodation in the heart of Warsaw, Harenda offers simple rooms equipped with a TV and safe. The lobby is welcoming and once you've checked in, you can climb the large wide staircase to find your room. Note that some of the rooms/suites have been rented out for business purposes (eg doctors' offices) and that some singles are on the small size. The hotel entrance is off Krakowskie-Przedmiescie to the left; you're really paying for the location here.
Maria Hotel
Away from the city centre, but handy to the city's Jewish sights and just a few tram stops from the Old Town, Maria Hotel is a small, family-run and family-friendly hotel with modern amenities and a decent restaurant on the premises. Rooms are generally big, bright, and airy, and all are en suite. It's in a rambling old house with rooms set over three floors (no lift) with atmosphere in spades and a friendly, welcoming staff.
Castle Inn
Castle Inn Oki Doki has plenty going for it. It's the only hotel within the limits of Warsaw's Old Town, is stumbling distance from the Royal Castle, and is housed in a 17th-century tenement house that miraculously survived WWII. Rooms (most of which are 3-star, a handful 4) are colourful ensembles, each sporting a unique and playful theme, such as 'Alice in Wonderland' or 'Oriental Express'. `Viktor' is named after a reclusive street artist, complete with artsy graffiti.
