Gambia Travel Video - Its easy to miss The Gambia on a map of mighty Africa. This tiny sliver of land is a mere 500km long and 50km wide, and, with the exception of an 80km shoreline, its entirely enveloped by Senegal. But beach-bound Travelists have long known how to trace this oddly shaped country on the map. Its magnificent coast invites visitors to laze and linger, tempting with luxurious beach resorts and bustling fishing villages. But theres more to Africas smallest country than sun and surf. Stunning nature reserves, such as Kiang West National Park and River Gambia National Park (also known as Baboon Island), and the historical slaving stations of St James Island and Jufureh offer peaceful pauses from the clamour of the nearby coast. And The Gambias vibrant culture is always there to be taken in by open-eyed visitors. Traditional wrestling matches regularly take place, the heaving markets of Banjul and Serekunda the Atlantic Coast have you soaking up the atmosphere and sharpening your negotiation skills, and the striking performances of kora-strumming griots can be experienced during weddings, baptisms or public concerts.
Bird-lovers will easily be seduced by this compact country. On a Travel upriver, the cries of over 300 species will follow you as your pirogue (traditional canoe) charts a leisurely course through mangrove-lined wetlands and the island of Georgetown. Even if your ornithological skills dont go beyond identifying an inner-city pigeon, youll be tempted to wield binoculars here, and can rely on an excellent network of trained guides to help you tell a pelican from a flamingo.
Enjoy Your Gambia Travel Video!

Banjul, officially the City of Banjul and formerly known as Bathurst, is the capital of the Gambia and is in a division of the same name. The population of the city proper is only 34,828, with the Greater Banjul Area, which includes the City of Banjul and the Kanifing Municipal Council, at a population of 357,238 (2003 census).[1] Banjul is on St Mary's Island (Banjul Island), where the Gambia River enters the Atlantic Ocean. The island is connected to the mainland to the west and the rest of Greater Banjul Area via bridges. There are also ferries linking Banjul to the mainland at the other side of the river.
Etymology
Banjul takes its name from the Mandé people who gathered specific fibres on the island, which were used in the manufacture of ropes. Bang julo is the Mandinka (Mande) word for rope fibre. The mispronunciation led to the word Banjul.

We just returned from a trip of a week visiting The Gambia.
During the visit there was an attempt for a coup against Yahya Jammeh, the president of The Gambia. He became president in 1994. Via a coup.
Local people mentioned that since then, there has been an attempt for a coup roughly every three years. More information about this attempted coup on the following website:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/gambia/11322107/Sandhurst-trained-officer-led-Gambian-coup.html
As tourists we did not notice anything of the attempted coupe, we where alerted by family back home.
As a wink therefore this video with things to do on your trip to The Gambia / while waiting for the next attempt for a coup.
During our trip we stayed in the Senegambia hotel. When you consider staying in this hotel, consider the "Deluxe Villa". This is similar in pricing compared to a apartment, but the villa is much bigger, has a terrace, has a safe and has two separate bedrooms. Locally this Deluxe Villa is known as Z4 and as room 2902.
More information about the Deluxe Villa, here: http://www.senegambiahotel.com/beach/index.php/en/accomodation/deluxe-villa
Our travel scheme has been:
day 1
Arrival with the weekly Corendon flight from Amsterdam to Banjul. In the evening we met separately with two guides for planning trips.
day 2
Rented a bike and went for sightseeing the area. First stop was the Bijilo Forest Park, which is very nearby the strip in Kololi. The afternoon we cycled to Serekunda.
day 3
Visited the Makasuta Cultural Forest, Tanji and went for bird watching
day 4
Visited the Fatalah Wildlife Reserve in Senegal, herefore we took the ferry from Banjul to Barra and from there rented a car. After this we went to St James Island and visited the slave trade museum. With the car we drove to the village “Juffureh”/”Albreda”, from where we took a 10 minute boat trip towards the island.
This day covered both the "Roots by Land" trip and the "Trip To North Senegal" from Arch tours. With a small group, these trips can easily be done in one day and saves taking the same ferry twice for two days. Do be advised to take the first ferry, which for us left from Banjul at 0700AM but this differs per day.
A special thanks to our tour guide, Jane Joof, who was willingly to offer and arrange this customized trip, also for a small group of 2-4 persons. Jane has his own company which can be visited on http://www.justgambia.com.
day 5
A day of rest on which we went for a walk on the beach.
day 6
Visited the Abuko Nature Reserve which is 12 kilometer from Kololi. Here we saw crocodiles, therefore being a perfect alternative for the Kachikally Crocodile pool in Bakau.
Next to Abuko we visited a bird show of Alan Ames and visited his small 'zoo' which has eagles, cheetahs, monkeys and a small lion. More information can be found on http://www.gambia.co.uk/blog/2014/05/28/abuko-nature-reserve/
After this we went to the Lamin Lodge for lunch, after which we visited a local compound.
day 7
The second day of rest on which we went for a walk on the beach.
day 8
Had a golf training at the Kololi Beach Club [http://www.kololi.com/kol_golf.php]. This is much smaller then the Fajara golf course, but for beginners more then adequate.
In our trip we skipped a visit to George Town and area, since this is 2 days trip during which you travel by car for 5 hours [one way]. For us, this was to much traveling.
The restaurants for diner which we liked in Kololi where the following:
1) Tohonga African Queen, especially the sizzlers are advised. This is also one of the few restaurants open for lunch.
2) The Kololi Beach club, they regularly have shows, or very nearby the beach and less expensive then restaurants on the strip. As a non-member you are not allowed to take the closest entrance, but you have to walk via a smelly and quiet road towards another entrance. Access via the beach is also possible, but the guards mentioned the [small?] risk of being robbed here.
3) Love 2

Cheap Travel Destinations: 5 Best Budget Destinations In Africa For 2015
1) Travel tips in Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town is deservedly recognized as one of the most beautiful cities not only in Africa, but around the world. The mild climate is pleasant, fine cuisine, original architecture and different attractions has always attracted tourists from around the world literally. Street jazz bands, a variety of restaurants and shops, a string of luxury convertibles, salty sea breeze, the bright sun and the open smiles of citizens - all this gives the city a completely unique flavor. Despite the fact that Cape Town is an African city, it has had a significant influence Western European culture, and because of this familiarity with the exhilarating Africa takes place in a familiar environment.
2) Africa travel - Tunisia
Tunisia, recently listed among Lonely Planet’s best value travel destinations for 2015 has African appeal and gems without excessive price tags. Home to the renowned Medina of Tunis, Tunisia has a number of landmarks and is always buzzing with things to do. Hotels and restaurants charge a pretty penny for accommodation and food. You can get a nice hotel room for less than $30, a delicious meal and beer for less than $10. The country has a collection of historical places to visit free of charge or with minimal entrance fees. If you love shopping, you should visit the souks and bazaar shops. If you are a bargain hunter, you will definitely love Tunisia.
3 ) How to travel cheap in summer vacation in The Gambia
Gambia is known to be the one of the smallest countries in Africa. Many travellers visit the country to explore its local music scene, to see the historic slave towns, to frolic in the balmy water and get a utopian tan. The destination caters to budget travellers; you don’t have to worry about spending a fortune on food and accommodation. You can get a delicious meal and a bottle of local or international beer for less than $10 while you can get a stylish hotel room facing the ocean for about $30 per night. The Gambia offers visitors an opportunity to relax in their world.
Off the coast of the Indian Ocean, east of Kenya, it is a most unusual and ancient spa town - Lamu. Among the mangroves, where absolutely no cars, intertwined narrow streets of this place lost in time. In Lamu there is no house number and exact address, but there is a gorgeous beaches, unusual nature, fine restaurants and comfortable accommodation. Tourists come here for peace and quiet, peaceful respite from the hustle and civilization.
4) Africa Vacation in Lamu, Kenya
Lamu - the oldest port city, where first established nations Swahili. They are descendants of natives coastline, population of the islands of Pemba, Zanzibar and Mafia. The unique features of their culture preserved in Lamu to the present day. Progress is only slightly touched the life of the city and gave him the most important acquisitions, such as telecommunications, internet network, electricity and other paramount its benefits. Currently the city is under UNESCO protection.
The best way Lamu suitable for a romantic trip, honeymoon, relaxing in solitude.
5 ) Fez, Morocco
Another place for a holiday tour is the ancient city of Fez, which for tens of centuries to build a culture of Morocco.
Budget Travel in Fez: A stay here is those who is indifferent to the beaches, tolerates heat, likes history and donkeys. Yes, quadrupeds are the main means of transportation around the city, as with motor vehicles is prohibited. Palaces, minarets, markets with local products and relatively low prices attract tourists from Europe, but our compatriots in Fez rare visitors. And not only that Russian prefer a beach holiday, but also that the direct flights to Fes, and we do not have to fly with a connection in London, Milan or Paris.
