Previous estimates that China has reclaimed 2,000 acres since December 2013 are wrong, the Pentagon report says, and the real amount is around 2,900 acres.

Good morning, Listeners! This is Linda from News in Bed – with a special topic of conversation for you this morning. Today is Wednesday, October 28, 2015. Here is the top story:
The South China Sea is the subject of rival and often messy territorial claims, with China, Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam disputing sovereignty of island chains and nearby waters.
In little more than 18 months, China has reclaimed more than 2,000 acres at three main locations in the Spratly Islands -- Subi, Mischief and Fiery Cross reefs, where it has built airstrips thought to be capable of handling bombers.
Even though maritime law doesn't usually accord territorial waters to islands built on previously submerged reefs, the Chinese are saying that a U.S. Navy warship came too close to one of its artificial islands, and that it had to deploy two Chinese warships, as well as naval warplanes, to monitor and warn the American vessel in the South China Sea's contested waters. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday that the vessel "illegally entered into the waters of China's Spratly Islands. The action taken by the U.S. warship has threatened China's sovereignty and security interest, and has put the safety of personnel on the reefs in danger.”
A U.S. defense official told CNN that the destroyer USS Lassen "conducted a transit" within 12 nautical miles of Subi Reef in the Spratly Islands on Tuesday morning. The United States hasn't breached the 12-mile limit since China began massive dredging operations to turn three reefs into artificial islands in 2014 – even if the U.S. were to recognize the man-made islands as being Chinese territory.
China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs insists that its activity in the South China Sea doesn’t affect freedom of navigation by sea or air, but then said that it holds "indisputable sovereignty over the Spratly Islands and its nearby waters”.
In another contradictory statement, Chinese officials stated, "China is resolutely opposed to any country damaging China's sovereignty and security interest in the name of freedom of navigation and overflight.
Similarly, back in May, a U.S. surveillance plane carrying a CNN news crew flew over the Spratly Islands, and immediately triggered eight warnings from the Chinese navy to back off.
As an example of the communist nation’s double standards, China has also claimed that its actions in September, when Chinese navy ships entered U.S. territorial waters off Alaska, coming within 12 miles of the coastline during President Barack Obama's visit to the state, were “consistent with innocent passage under international maritime law.”
And that is our topic of conversation for today. Have a winning Wednesday, and we’ll see you tomorrow!

PUERTO PRINCESA — In defiance of China’s warnings, Philippines and Japan have, for the second day, flown patrol planes, including P-3C Orion surveillance aircraft. near disputed areas of the South China sea.
The flights took place in the general direction of the resource-rich Reed Bank. Although it falls within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, China has contested this claim.
Despite opposition from the Chinese foreign ministry, Japan and the Philippines have insisted that their joint drills are a peaceful exercise intended to strengthen humanitarian and disaster response between the former World War II foes.
While some have welcomed a growing Japanese presence in the region, Japan’s military is stretched its own territorial dispute with China, as well as the ever-present security threat from North Korea.
Meanwhile, analysts have suggested that China may begin placing Shenyang J-11 air-superiority fighter on the recently built runways in the Spratlys, according to the South China Morning Post. The placement of the fighter, which is based on the Russian Sukhoi Su-27, would extend the reach of China’s air force 1,000 km further south.

Mischief reef (Kagitingan reef) is controlled by the Philippines until China takeover the area in February 1995. How the Philippines can take back this reef? When China massively reclaim the area!
When the Philippines Armed Forces unable to patrol due to monsoon season, China slowly annexed the reef by building a structure and insisting its for their fisherman use. The Philippine Government strongly react the structure creation but later on the two sides settle amicably. But in 1998 (1997 Asian Financial Crisis), China resume the construction of the reef. In 2015, an astonishing reclamation surprise to us, which the Philippine Government unable to stop (More talk than action).
Author's Overview:
all the incident might not happen if the Philippine Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard are properly equipped with modern equipment. It can't deny that the total budget of PH Defense is good for basic needs (such as salary & office maintenance). But in adding war equipment and maintenance cost of existing ordnance, nothing! There is also a modernization law (started in 1995 and revised during the Pres. Aquino's term), a modernization that today's bidding takes 3-6 years to approve. While the Philippine Islands slowly eats up by our giant neighbor.
China is aggressive because she know we have nothing to counter their actions. Look at Japan, maybe if they have i'll equipped armed forces, the Senkaku Islands are now belong to Chinese territory.

China recently deployed two artillery pieces on one of its artificial islands in the South China Sea, an unprecedented move that suggests Beijing is trying to extend its military reach in the contested waters, US officials said Friday.
The heavy weapons, since removed, posed no security threat but their positioning -- within range of territory claimed by Vietnam -- underscored Washington's concerns that China is pursuing a massive island-building project for military purposes, officials said.
The two motorized artillery pieces were spotted on a manmade feature about a month ago in the Spratly Islands region, a defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP, citing surveillance imagery.
It is the first time that China has been accused of deploying artillery or other weaponry on their man-made islands in the area.

South China Sea disputes: China’s land reclamation in the Spratlys grows, says Pentagon - TomoNews

BEIJING — A new Pentagon report released on Thursday says that China’s reclamation efforts in the Spratly Islands has grown dramatically over the last few months, and at a rate far faster than earlier this year.
Previous estimates that China has reclaimed 2,000 acres since December 2013 are wrong, the Pentagon report says, and the real amount is around 2,900 acres.
According to the Pentagon, China has reclaimed more land in the past 20 months than the other claimants combined over the past 40 years. China said in early August that it has halted its reclamation efforts in the island chain, although many countries question these claims.
On Fiery Cross Reef, China has built an airstrip that the country could use as an alternative to an aircraft carrier. Reuters reports that the 3,000-metre-long runway will most likely be operational by the end of this year.
At many of the reclamation sites in the Spratlys, China has also built channels and berthing areas for large ships.
The new Pentagon report, titled “The Asia-Pacific Maritime Security Strategy,” was required by Congress ahead of a 2015 defense bill.

Chinese officials have condemned a US ship's passage near disputed islands in the South China Sea as "illegal".
The guided-missile destroyer USS Lassen breached the 12-nautical mile zone China claims around Subi and Mischief reefs in the Spratly archipelago.
The freedom of navigation operation is a serious challenge to China's claims over the artificial islands.
Its foreign ministry said the ship had been warned and characterised the act as a "threat to China's sovereignty".
Lu Kang, the spokesman, added that Beijing would "resolutely respond to any country's deliberately provocative actions" and that the ship had been "tracked and warned" while on the mission to deliberately enter the disputed waters.
Meanwhile, US Defence Department spokesman Cdr Bill Urban said that "the United States is conducting routine operations in the South China Sea in accordance with international law".
The move was welcomed by several countries in the East Asia region, including the Philippines and Japan.

China on Wednesday condemned the Philippines for doing repairs to a rusting ship it ran aground on a South China Sea reef, demanding Manila remove the vessel while adding that Beijing "reserved the right to take further measures".The Foreign Ministry did not elaborate on those measures in a statement that called Manila the "real regional trouble maker" for reinforcing the ship, which has sat on Second Thomas Shoal since 1999. The wording of the warning mirrors what China has said in the past when it's particularly angry with other countries.Reuters reported on Tuesday that the Philippine navy had been using wooden fishing boats and other small craft to move cement, steel and welding equipment to the BRP Sierra Madre since late last year for repair work aimed at stopping the ship from breaking apart.Manila regards Second Thomas Shoal, which lies 105 nautical miles (195 km) southwest of the Philippine region of Palawan, as being within its 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone. China, which claims virtually all the South China Sea, says the reef is part of its territory.
