Don't let the descent fool you. Flying across the Najd desert plateau, one would be forgiven for wondering, why here? The climate is dry, and dust storms can kick up a blinding fit. Closer in, however, and you'll soon see date palms and shrubs spotting the landscape. The name Riyadh, in fact, comes from the Arabic for gardens (rowdah), and lies atop an area where several underground riverbeds converge, resulting in a natural oasis that has long drawn traders and nomads alike. In much the same vein, expat life in Riyadh can sometimes be judged too soon and too bluntly. Although it's true that most foreigners are grounded in compound existence, this is still a city of over five million inhabitants, with all the complexity that that implies. (Reuters) - The Saudi Arabian government awarded $22.5 billion in contracts to three foreign-led consortia on Sunday for the design and construction of a metro rail system in the capital Riyadh.
The project, which will involve six rail lines extending 176 kilometers (110 miles) and carrying electric, driverless trains, is the world's largest public transport system currently under development, Saudi officials said.
U.S. construction giant Bechtel Corp heads a group which won a $9.45 billion contract to build two lines, the government announced.
A consortium led by Spain's Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC.MC) won a $7.82 billion contract for three lines, while Italy's Ansaldo STS (STS.MI) heads a group that won a $5.21 billion order.
Design work will start immediately and construction will begin in the first quarter of 2014, the government said. The project would be completed in 2019.
Flush with cash after more than two years of high oil prices, Saudi Arabia is pumping billions of dollars into infrastructure projects designed to improve living standards and ease social discontent in the wake of the 2011 uprisings elsewhere in the Arab world.
Last August the government approved a $16.5 billion plan to modernize the transport system in its holy city of Mecca, including building a bus network and a metro system.
It is also building several other rail systems, including a 2,750 km line running from Riyadh to near the northern border with Jordan.
Saudi officials said Riyadh's population was projected to grow from 6 million to over 8 million in the next 10 years, making the metro vital to ease congestion and pollution in the capital's streets.
In addition to raising living standards, the government says it wants to upgrade the country's infrastructure to help the economy diversify beyond oil, making it less vulnerable to any future plunge of global oil prices.

There's a time for bejeweled daggers and bangles, and then there's the rest of life. A primary destination for anyone touching down in Riyadh is the souk, or market. All sorts of luxury goods, spices and kitsch are ready to be haggled over here, but in reality, expats who relocate to Saudi Arabia's capital spend far more time roaming the polished, climate-controlled expanses of modern malls than negotiating the winding aisles of a souk.
And when it comes to malls, there's plenty to pick from. High-end everything is on sale in Riyadh. (In fact, anyone with understated tastes might have to dig deep, as bling can seem to be perennially in style.) Al Faisaliyah and Mamlaka shopping centers are located downtown, with the latter notably home to an entire ladies-only floor. Malls aren't just for shopping, though. Wandering the generous spaces of the Hayat or the vast Sahara complex provide a much-needed distraction during the withering summer months. There are restaurants, kiddie playlands, and plenty of parking. Large-scale grocery outlets are also included in the mall deal. Patrons can purchase most of their favorites from back home at stores like Tamimi (which stocks Safeway goods), Carrefour or Hyperpanda. Those looking for home furnishings turn toward the Saco mall, or to the familiar décor found at IKEA. In other words, Riyadh's shopping world is full-up, leaving the retail-crazed spoiled for choice.

Riyadh (/rɨˈjɑːd/; Arabic: الرياض transliterated Ar Riyāḍ pronounced [ʔɑrːiˈjɑːdˤ], English: The Gardens) is the capital and largest city of Saudi Arabia. It is also the capital of Riyadh Province, and belongs to the historical regions of Najd and Al-Yamama. It is situated in the center of the Arabian Peninsula on a large plateau, and is home to 5,254,560 people, and the urban center of a region with a population of close to 7 million people. The city is divided into 15 municipal districts, managed by Riyadh Municipality headed by the mayor of Riyadh, and the Riyadh Development Authority, chaired by the Governor of Riyadh Province, Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz. The current mayor of Riyadh is Abdul Aziz ibn Ayyaf Al-Miqrin, appointed in 1998. Riyadh has the largest female university in the world, the Princess Nora bint Abdulrahman University.. It has been designated as Beta World City.
During the Pre-Islamic era, the settlement at the site was called Hajr (Arabic: حجر), and was reportedly founded by the tribe of Banu Hanifa. Hajr served as the capital of the province of Al Yamamah, whose governors were responsible for most of central and eastern Arabia during the Umayyad and Abbasid eras. Al-Yamamah broke away from the Abbasid Empire in 866 and the area fell under the rule of the Ukhaydhirites, who moved the capital from Hajr to nearby Al Kharj. The city then went into a long period of decline. In the 14th century North African traveller Ibn Battuta wrote of his visit to Hajr, describing it as "the main city of Al-Yamamah, and its name is Hajr". Ibn Battuta goes on to describe it as a city of canals and trees with most of its inhabitants belonging to Bani Hanifa, and reports that he continued on with their leader to Mecca to perform the Hajj.

(Reuters) - The Saudi Arabian government awarded $22.5 billion in contracts to three foreign-led consortia on Sunday for the design and construction of a metro rail system in the capital Riyadh.
The project, which will involve six rail lines extending 176 kilometers (110 miles) and carrying electric, driverless trains, is the world's largest public transport system currently under development, Saudi officials said.
U.S. construction giant Bechtel Corp heads a group which won a $9.45 billion contract to build two lines, the government announced.
A consortium led by Spain's Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC.MC) won a $7.82 billion contract for three lines, while Italy's Ansaldo STS (STS.MI) heads a group that won a $5.21 billion order.
Design work will start immediately and construction will begin in the first quarter of 2014, the government said. The project would be completed in 2019.
Flush with cash after more than two years of high oil prices, Saudi Arabia is pumping billions of dollars into infrastructure projects designed to improve living standards and ease social discontent in the wake of the 2011 uprisings elsewhere in the Arab world.
Last August the government approved a $16.5 billion plan to modernize the transport system in its holy city of Mecca, including building a bus network and a metro system.
It is also building several other rail systems, including a 2,750 km line running from Riyadh to near the northern border with Jordan.
Saudi officials said Riyadh's population was projected to grow from 6 million to over 8 million in the next 10 years, making the metro vital to ease congestion and pollution in the capital's streets.
In addition to raising living standards, the government says it wants to upgrade the country's infrastructure to help the economy diversify beyond oil, making it less vulnerable to any future plunge of global oil prices.

There's a time for bejeweled daggers and bangles, and then there's the rest of life. A primary destination for anyone touching down in Riyadh is the souk, or market. All sorts of luxury goods, spices and kitsch are ready to be haggled over here, but in reality, expats who relocate to Saudi Arabia's capital spend far more time roaming the polished, climate-controlled expanses of modern malls than negotiating the winding aisles of a souk.
And when it comes to malls, there's plenty to pick from. High-end everything is on sale in Riyadh. (In fact, anyone with understated tastes might have to dig deep, as bling can seem to be perennially in style.) Al Faisaliyah and Mamlaka shopping centers are located downtown, with the latter notably home to an entire ladies-only floor. Malls aren't just for shopping, though. Wandering the generous spaces of the Hayat or the vast Sahara complex provide a much-needed distraction during the withering summer months. There are restaurants, kiddie playlands, and plenty of parking. Large-scale grocery outlets are also included in the mall deal. Patrons can purchase most of their favorites from back home at stores like Tamimi (which stocks Safeway goods), Carrefour or Hyperpanda. Those looking for home furnishings turn toward the Saco mall, or to the familiar décor found at IKEA. In other words, Riyadh's shopping world is full-up, leaving the retail-crazed spoiled for choice.

Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia and its largest city. It is also the capital of Riyadh Province, and belongs to the historical regions of Nejd and Al-Yamama. It is situated in the center of the Arabian Peninsula on a large plateau, and is home to over 4,260,000 people.
The city is divided into 15 municipal districts, managed by Riyadh Municipality headed by the mayor of Riyadh, and the Riyadh Development Authority, chaired by the Governor of Riyadh Province, Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz.
The current mayor of Riyadh is Abdul Aziz ibn Ayyaf Al Migrin, appointed in 1998.

Each summer, in Jesenice in the north of today’s EU Member State of Slovenia,an historical steam train travels through the Triglav National Park and both the Bača and Soča Valleys, to Nova Gorica.The first stop is Bled Jezero. Several actors are on the train, dressed as conductors in the uniforms of the old empire, a special touch that adds to the wonderful atmosphere. The train station is sited above a hollowed-out glacier that later became Bled Lake, one of the warmest lakes in the Alps. The Austro-Hungarian monarchy required a second railway connection between Vienna and Trieste. Its planning took more than thirty years and it took five years to construct: tunnels were blasted out of the rock, narrow valleys used to their best advantage, and amazing bridges constructed. With the completion of this railroad, the railway network connected Vienna and Central Europe with the Adriatic regions of the K and K monarchy. On this journey we have travelled on the youngest of the ‘steam ladies’ of the Ljubljana Railway Museum. The 33-037 weighs a hundred and thirty six tons, is twenty three metres long and its tender can take nine tons of coal. The Bohinj Museum Train is a fabulous experience. Not one to be missed!

In this Disneyland video, we'll take you on a tour of the Disneyland Resort and share some of our favorite Disneyland tips with you.
Try to buy your Disneyland tickets online so you don't have to hassle with the lines when you arrive. If you're staying in one of the Disneyland hotels, you can enjoy Magic Mornings, which allows early access into the park.
If you live in Southern California, it's worth your while to buy the Disneyland annual pass instead of a Disneyland ticket. It pays for itself after only three visits.
Disneyland Park is home to eight different lands spread across 85 acres. You can pick up a Disneyland map when you pass through the gates.
Be sure to check out the most popular Disneyland rides first, as they usually have the longest lines. Always try to use the Disneyland Fastpass service.
At the guest information board, you can find out about Disneyland character appearances, or the next Disneyland parade showtimes. Disneyland hours are extended during the summer until around midnight. Check their Web site for the daily schedule.
In this video, Veronica and Jason check out Splash Mountain, Disneyland Matterhorn and the Disneyland Haunted Mansion, which takes on a whole new feeling during the Disneyland holiday.

One of the most fun Disneyland secrets are the Hidden Mickeys. We found two on the Pirates of the Caribbean during our Disneyland trip.
