Introduction
Being an archipelago, Indonesia is facing imminent impact from sea level rise due to climate change. 1,
500 Indonesian islands are at risk of sinking and we urgently need
adaptation strategies.
Drawing from our experiences, such impacts are real and changing the landscape of our conservation areas. To adapt and mitigate those impacts, we’ve applied conservation strategies such as the following cases:
PT.Pasifik Agro Sentosa – Sustainable oil palm plantation
The first example shows the success of a conservation effort in an oil palm plantation at
West Kalimantan.
Previously an unproductive ex-logging area, the area is now replanted with oil palm trees.
The company developed commitment towards 3P’s (
Planet,
People,
Profit), which is consistently applied since the beginning. The conservation area has an important
function to protect the endangered fauna and flora and help reduce global warming.
From the vast biodiversities observed in the area, we have shown best practices for oil palm plantation where conservation can co-exists sucessfully with an oil palm plantation, such our case in
North Kayong Region, in West Kalimantan
Province.
Tambling Wildlife Nature Conservation
The second example is Tambling Wildlife Nature Conservation, located in
Lampung province. Given the existance of rare biodiveristies and resources in this area, illegal activities such as deforestation, animal poaching and harmful fishing methods have seriously damaged the area which is still ongoing until today. Our conservation programs which include community development and securing the environment have shown real impact seen from its recovering tree coverage and appearance of healthy ecosystem.
This area is also known for its award winning rehabilitation facility for Sumatran conflict tigers. The area has one of the highest tiger density in
Sumatra without any accidents of human attacks because of the abundant food supply.
Bali Mangrove
Care Forum – Mangrove conservation
The last section shows threats facing the bay area in
South Bali and the conservation effort to sustain the mangrove forest surrounding the bay.
Currently, the bay is facing several problems such as continuous sedimentation, island abrasion, urban waste and illegal land settlement encroaching into the mangrove area.
Without any intervention, this may harm the existance of the mangrove ecosystem and hence Bali Mangrove Care Forum was created to address those issues alongside the local communities.
