STORYLINE:
The Germans, famous for their love of fast cars are going green, embracing and advancing the development and use of renewable energy and setting a bar for the world to follow.
Solar and wind energy use have jumped 15 per cent in the past five years, a major push in the ecologically friendly direction for a country that prides itself on having invented the combustion engine.
Much of the boom has its roots in the environmentally friendly Green party's tenure in former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's governing coalition, which pushed subsidies for renewable energy firms through parliament and even took the nation's love for separating trash - paper, packaging, biodegradable and glass - to a new level by banning the aluminum can.
At the same time, Germans have never thought twice of driving fast cars along the autobahn, or jetting off to Mallorca or Sharm El-Sheik on discount airlines.
Yet climate change is forcing Germany to change, and the effect is being felt on all levels of society, even in the east, where vestiges of communist rule meant that environmental issues were a low priority.
A former computer chip plant in Frankfurt an der Oder is being renovated from top to bottom to become a new plant that will turn a gooey blend of silica into polished sheets of dark blue solar panels made to order.
"And this is the decisive factor, because other countries will follow and then we want to supply these huge growth markets with solar technology 'made in Germany'."

The Germans, famous for their love of fast cars are going green, embracing and advancing the development and use of renewable energy and setting a bar for the world to follow.
Solar and wind energy use have jumped 15 per cent in the past five years, a major push in the ecologically friendly direction for a country that prides itself on having invented the combustion engine.
Much of the boom has its roots in the environmentally friendly Green party's tenure in former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's governing coalition, which pushed subsidies for renewable energy firms through parliament and even took the nation's love for separating trash - paper, packaging, biodegradable and glass - to a new level by banning the aluminum can.
At the same time, Germans have never thought twice of driving fast cars along the autobahn, or jetting off to Mallorca or Sharm El-Sheik on discount airlines.
Yet climate change is forcing Germany to change, and the effect is being felt on all levels of society, even in the east, where vestiges of communist rule meant that environmental issues were a low priority.
A former computer chip plant in Frankfurt an der Oder is being renovated from top to bottom to become a new plant that will turn a gooey blend of silica into polished sheets of dark blue solar panels made to order.
