Beijing and Washington are not mere ships passing each other in the South China Sea – they are the two countries vying to play the commanding role in Asia. While China seeks to redress what it sees as violations of its sovereignty, Washington does have policy options, but are any of them effective?

China's Tianhe-2 supercomputer has retained its position as the world's most powerful system for the sixth consecutive time.
That's according to a biannual Top500 list of supercomputers released Monday.
Tianhe-2, or Milky Way-2, with a performance of 33.86 petaflops per second, was developed by China's National University of Defense Technology and deployed at the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou.
It has held the title since June 2013.
The Chinese system is almost twice as fast as the next on the list, Titan of the U.S. Department of Energy, which has a performance of 17.59 petaflops per second.
In fact, there has been no change among the ranking of the world's top5 supercomputers since June 2013 in the latest edition of the closely watched list.
According to the editor of the report, the top five computers are very powerful and expensive.
And it will take perhaps another year before a new system enters the top five.
The Top500 list is considered one of the most authoritative rankings of the world's supercomputers.
It is compiled on the basis of the machines' performance on the Linpack benchmark by experts from the United States and Germany.

Chinese markets plunged on Monday in the biggest loss since the financial crash of 2007.
There is growing concern among investors that the world's second-biggest economy is declining more than previously thought. The government has injected $100 billion into banks to help spur the economy.
Earlier, China's central bank devalued the yuan in a move seen as a bid to help exports.
But what is causing this decline? And what are the ramifications for the global economy?

China is being shaken to the core. Chinese leader Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign seems to have finally targeted the biggest tiger of them all—former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin. He's the one behind all the other big, corrupt officials, like Zhou Yongkang or Bo Xilai, that Xi has been purging. But can the Communist Party of China survive a take down of a former leader? And what will this mean for the future of China?

Crackdown: The report on Uigher protests that broke relations between China and Australia
Xinjiang province has long been the site of ethnic tensions between the Uighur population and Chinese rule. Amid fears that fanatical Uighurs are aligning with foreign extremists, the state crackdown is fiercer than ever.
"A normal person wouldn't raise a butcher's knife to the elderly and children. Can we still call them human beings?", asks policeman Ainiding Memtimin. In May he was on the scene when a group of extremists threw explosives into a busy Urumqi marketplace, killing 39 people. A Uighur himself, like most locals he is baffled by such drastic violent acts. Yet the tensions that have simmered in this region are sitting on a knife edge. "Injustice is everywhere here, but we can't talk about it", says one Uighur farmer in a snatched interview. On Xinjiang's highways, cars are now being stopped for full airport-style security checks. The government keeps a close eye on religious institutions and veils for women and beards for men are actively discouraged. Teaching in the Uighur language is disappearing in schools and it's almost non-existent at universities. And it isn't just the Uighurs feeling the crackdown; enormous numbers of Han Chinese have been pressed into the province to water down the Uighurs' presence and influence. In some towns, payments are being offered for inter-marriage. But is China's central government using a sledgehammer to crack a nut? This report doggedly pushes past the press restrictions and government minders to tackle this difficult question.

Travel video about destination China.
China’s Imperial City is located in the centre of its ancient Middle Kingdom, a gigantic and inscrutable empire beyond the Great Wall. The Imperial City is entered through the Gates of Heavenly Peace. After seven years of construction, Ming Emperor Zhu Di moved into his newly-established palace complex in which over eight thousand people lived in almost a thousand rooms. The palace served as both a residential and governmental seat to the emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. A stone’s throw away from the old Summer Palace is the Garden of Harmonious Unity that was the favourite garden of the Emperor’s household who retreated to its cool lakeside shores during the humid months of summer. Close to Badaling the Great Wall Of China extends majestically across misty mountains. It is the largest Man-made structure in the world and was erected to protect the country from invasion from the North. The gigantic wall represented the division of two very different cultures. On one side the Central Asian Nomads and on the other the highly developed civilisation of the emerging Chinese Empire. Shanghai is a Gigantic City and a meeting point of both east and west. The shoreline is without a doubt the city’s main focal point and is a combination of past, present and future and contains the historic monuments and eye catching buildings of a great city. Famous explorer Marco Polo referred to Suzhou as the ‘Venice of the East’, a city that is particularly famous for its gardens. Many of its extremely elegant buildings are remnants of a glorious past. Yunnan´s most famous site is the unique Stone Forest Of Shi Lin, a forest of rock that extends for 27,000 hectares. Hong Kong is a city of the superlative with glimmering skyscrapers that seem to take root in the sky and one elegant building after another with shining glass and hi-tech facades. China is a world within a world!

6) A tour around Guilin, China at night including night markets, street food, pagodas and lakes 晚上桂林
7) Taking the train in China from Hong Kong to Guangzho en route to Guilin travel video
So tonight is our very last night in Yangshuo, a charming little town in Southwestern China, so we're going to show you around the main strip.
So our first stop is going to be the street food market. I haven't eaten in maybe two hours, so it's time to get a snack.
If I had to choose between Guilin and Yangshuo the two most popular cities in this region it's definitely Yangshuo. It's a more historic town. It's a lot more pedestrian friendly and there are great
As we were wandering around the night market tonight we had lots of people come up to us and ask to take photos beside us. At least probably four or five times and we finally filmed the last one. It was really cool. We were like celebrities in China. Yeah, almost famous.
So, this market had some pretty cool souvenirs. We saw fake Chinese passports if you want to take one of those home. They also had combs carved out of ox bone. They had these stamps where you can get your Chinese name carved on them and then you can just sign documents that way which is pretty cool.
Today we are visiting a local hill tribe that just lives a few hours outside of Guilin and we've come here because this community is known for the women's long hair. They grow it out and it's almost a meter and a half long and we're actually going to be watching a performance where they spin their hair and wrap it up and show us how they wear it.
Today we're in between Guilin and Yangshuo and we're doing a special river cruise down the Li River.
So this tour is going to be an hour and a half long and we're going to get to enjoy some pretty stunning landscapes, so I'm pretty excited about it.
When I came here two years ago it was hazy and foggy. Now it's a gorgeous glorious day.
Here we are at the Longji Rice Fields which are located just outside of Guilin. We've had such good luck. Check out the weather and the views behind.
So we are hiking up to one of the viewing platforms. This is going to be tough because it's like forty degrees outside and we're been told it'll take 30 minutes to one hour depending on our pace. So I'm trying to stay hydrated. Audrey is going to have to workout
We've rented a couple of bikes and we've decided to spend our last morning exploring around the countryside areas of Yangshuo. They were pretty cheap. Just under two dollars for each bike.
So we finally made it to Guilin.
So this is the Guilin main square. It gets really busy here at night. Lots of shops, restaurants, eateries. You can do it all here.
Chinese singing.
So we are now at the lake and the main attraction are the these two pagodas that light up at night.
Background music playing.
Oh, that mapo tofu looks so good. Really generous sized portion.
Well, it's hard to believe but our time in Hong Kong has already expired. Today we're taking a train ride. Where are we going? We're crossing over into China.
We are in Guangzho. Apparently there are two train stations. We arrived at the one that is on the East End of the City and we had to get across town to the other and it was difficult but we need to keep going.
So right now we are in Guangzho station waiting for our train to Guilin. And we happen to be waiting in the VIP room.
There is no tea in this tea room.
We're going to Guilin.
Uh, we're looking for number ten.
So we're in the dining cart now getting ready to have dinner. Let's see what is on the menu if we can even read it. We barely got a seat here.
Decision time. So we did manage to find an English menu which makes things a lot easier.
Fish one. Tofu with pork. One. Okay. Rice. One Rice? Okay. Beer. One. Okay. Ah, green tea - one. okay.
So this is the friend fish with a sweet and sour sauce.
Good morning. We are almost in Guilin. Our train has been delayed about an hour and a half.

https://www.expedia.com/Hong-Kong.d178263.Destination-Travel-Guides
Hong Kong, a former British territory, is one of the most densely populated places in China and in the world. You’ll find quiet neighborhoods full of temples and a dazzling skyline loaded with shopping and dining opportunities.
Your Hong Kong tour must include visits to the many religious sites scattered around the city, where incense wafts from shrines and monasteries take over entire hillsides. You’ll have a marvelous time shopping in tax-free Hong Kong, where you’ll be able to find clothing, jewelry, furniture, and everything else under the sun.
Don’t forget about Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, which overlooks the stunning Victoria Harbor. From there, your Hong Kong sightseeing may detour to Central, the city’s main business district, which looks like something out of a sci-fi film. The observation deck atop the International Commerce Centre will show you fantastic views of the city.
Hong Kong isn’t all cityscape, of course; there are many gardens, parks, and other green spaces for you to explore. You’ll also find beaches, national parks, and quiet islands for you to indulge in natural beauty and serenity. This city truly has everything.
Visit our Hong Kong travel guide page for more information or to plan your next vacation!

ANGRY CHINESE Tour Guide travel guide loses license after berating tourists for not spending enough.
A travel agency in Yunnan province has been forced to suspend operations after one of its employees was filmed unleashing a rant on a bus full of visitors because they weren't spending enough at scenic spots.
The guide, Chen Chunyuan, had her license revoked and her employer, the Kunming Fenghua Travel Agency, was fined 20,000 yuan.
The ordeal went down on April 12 as the group was traveling from Lijiang to Kunming and was headed for Xishuangbanna, according to a report on People's Daily. Video footage showing the guide 'venting frustration' on the travelers because they failed to spend enough money at a jewelry shop went viral after being posted on May 1.
"The bus is prepared for tourists who have moral standards and conscience. If you do not have these, you are not fit to sit here," Chen had said angrily.
"If each of you cannot spend 3,000 to 4,000 yuan, we will cancel the trip. Your flight tickets home will also not be covered in this trip as well," she went on.
"You need to at least spend for the sake of your conscience. If you cannot do that, there will be retributions coming to you," she added.
The China National Tourism Administration investigated the incident as soon as it began circulating online.
Tour guides commonly arrange deals with shops at scenic spots and encourage travelers to spend there as a way to earn commission. In February, a Harbin woman complained that a tour guide in Hong Kong refused to take the group to Disneyland unless each person spent 4,000 RMB at a jewelry store.

Shanghai - China Travel Guide http://goo.gl/Cl0qNG
Shanghai is the future all other Chinese cities aspire to reach. Forget creaking temples and dusty old palaces (there are plenty of them elsewhere); Shanghai is where people come to see modern China at its glimmering best.
This fast-paced city of towering skyscrapers is, in fact, not without its own significant history. Its glory days of the 1930s helped build Shanghai's reputation as a City of Sin. But to pause for too long at the city's past would be missing the point: Shanghai is all about the future face of the world's future super power, and coming here is to witness what makes the business end of China tick.
Perhaps best visited at the end of your trip to China, Shanghai offers history-tired tourists the chance to dine at glitzy restaurants, wine at funky cocktail bars and shop inside dazzling malls before resting up in the country's most impressive hotels.

Travel video about destination Qingdao Beach in China.
When the Chinese want to get married, they come to Tsingtao : there’s nothing cooler than a wedding on the beach or in the bay. Even if it resembles a production line. Tsingtao was originally popular with the Germans, who introduced the city to beer at the beginning of the last century. The beaches here have only recently become accessible to every social class. On the sands, one encounters a surprising cross-section, those in their work clothes and business suits, and others who daringly sport a swimming costume, (although bikinis are rare). Many hesitate to take the plunge, because a lot of young Chinese quite simply can’t swim ! Rubber rings are therefore indispensable, and are carried, or worn around the waist, on the buses going to the beach. Some people are abandoning them, though, as they learn to swim : in 2008 Tsingtao will host the Olympic Games’ water sports events…

The Huanglong (hoo-ang-long) Scenic Area, in China, is a place of such incredible beauty that it is almost otherworldly.
Flowing through the floor of this valley is one of the tributaries of a river.
Limestone pools, many of which are lipped with golden color, have slowly formed within the waters of this river.
On a bright day, the shimmering pools look like scales on a dragon whose body is the river.
The valley's name -- Huanlong - means Yellow Dragon.
As the bright waters flow, many exotic and fascinating types of animals can be seen moving about the park here.

The wealth of snow and ice produced in northeastern China provides the perfect setting for a magical sight; the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival.
This festival, which began in 1963, was stayed for a number of years by the Chinese Cultural Revolution, but was resumed again in 1985.
Each year the festival is themed and usually takes inspiration from Chinese fairy tales or noteworthy monuments around the world.
The festival displays an abundance of different nationalities and cultures both in the sculptures themselves, and the teams who craft them.
These elaborate and intricately carved sculptures can take a team of experienced sculptors the full month of the festival to complete.
Make the most of a cold day or brave a winters night when these massive creations come alive with vivacious lights, at the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival.

China Travel Guide http://bit.ly/12jcBNf
Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Xian, which was the first capital and the 10 biggest cities of China.
Xian was the first capital of China. The heart of the enormous empire once throbbed here. Rows of
imperial dynasties ruled from here over 11 centuries. This was the starting point of the famous Silk
Road and the city with its 1 million residents was considered a huge metropolis at that time. Although
the city lost its rank and influence after the revolution of Huang Chao in 875, it still belongs to the 10
biggest cities of China.
The Asian countries have always been famous for their handicrafts and China is no exception to this.
The making, coloring and processing of silk looks back on such ancient traditions as paper cutting, paper
folding or the making of --. Chinese calligraphy and wooden engravings are also famous together with
porcelain painting. In Xian, almost all fields of handicrafts are practiced, however the most well known
are the carvings made of semiprecious stones. From light green jade and deep green nephrite, mostly
little sculptures and ornaments are carved. The decorations and patterns of which imitate ancient
statues. There are many dragon representations but of course Buddha sculptures are also made in large
numbers.
China joined the monument and landscape protection program of the UNESCO in 1985. From 1987 until
these days, more than 10000 buildings have been declared monuments, 63 settlements have received
cityscape protection and 27 treasures have been recorded in the world heritage list. The long list
includes the imperial palace of Beijing, the summer palace, the temple of heaven, the Ming tombs, the
sections of the Great Wall around the capital and of course the terracotta army. This spectacle can be
found 1.5km east of the burial hill of Qin Shi Huang Di. The tomb of the strict ruler unifying China is 221
BC has not been excavated yet although there have been excavations in this 8 square kilometer area for
decades.
A farmer named Yang Gi Fa drilled a well from which water always escaped so he went down to the well
to check the reason. Do there, he found himself face to face with a frightful figure. However this figure
was not a monster or a ghost or even a skeleton or mummy but a clay statue which looked very real. In
communist China in 1974, people had to be very careful about what they should report to the
authorities and what not. After long pondering the farmer reported his finding to the museum of Xian
and he got 30 yuan as a reward. Archeologists found one of the most significant artifacts of the world
here, under the agricultural land.
In several cultures, for instance in Egypt or South America, it was a custom to bury the dead lord
together with all his people so that they could serve him even in the afterlife. From this custom, came
the -- in Egypt which is a little sculpture who works in place of his lord in the afterlife. Probably it was a
similar reason why this huge clay army followed their master to the grave. During the first excavations,
some three enormous chambers were found deep into the ground. The biggest of them is more than
14000 square meters. Inside this, the 6000 armed men stood ordered in military formation. The man
sized figures bore real weapons and accessories. Their makers didn't choose the easy way. They didn't
just pour clay into forms. They formed them individually by hand which is evident by the fact that the
face of all the figures have individual features. Maybe they really represented the actual people of the
army of that time.

Attractions in Times Square: Upscale shopping and restaurants
Time Square, full of lights, packed with people an quint-essential big city experience. I am not talking about that Time Square. I am talking about this one. Hong Kong's Time Square. Hong Kong's Time Square may not have the abundance of neon lights of New York's Time Square, however it does rival the one in New York in terms of crowds and activity.
Located in the Cosway Bay area, this is the center of Hong Kong's commercial activity, especially in the evenings. You notice the magnitude of this place as soon as you walk in. This huge building here has major upscale brand outlets, restaurants and offices. On the lower levels the place caters to shopaholics. But only those who are big spenders.
They did not forget the food part here. There are plenty of restaurants on the upper floor. Time Square is more than just this mall. Some might say the real action is outside on the streets. This is where you experience everyday Hong Kong life. This place is absolutely buzzing with energy. There are about a million people here going about their daily activities. This is Rosanna Wilcox, showing you Hong Kong.

Unemployment in China offers a new and invaluable insight into the Chinese economy, keenly analyzing the new directions the world's next superpower is now taking. Successfully bringing together a wide range of research and evidence from leading scholars in the field, this book shows how unemployment is one of the key issues facing the Chinese economy. China's market-oriented economic reform and industrial restructuring, while greatly improving efficiency, have also sharply reduced overstaffing, leading to a large increase in unemployment. At the same time, further restructuring is predicted as the full impact of the accession to the WTO is felt throughout China. A further problem is that new jobs in China's growth industries are more likely to be secured by younger, better-qualified workers than by older, poorly educated and unskilled workers who have been laid off. This book discusses a wide range of issues related to the growing unemployment problem in China and examines the problems in particular cities, appraises the government response, and assesses the prospects going forward.

As China has evolved into an industrial powerhouse over the past two decades, a new class of workers has developed: the dagongmei, or working girls. The dagongmei are women in their late teens and early twenties who move from rural areas to urban centers to work in factories. Because of state laws dictating that those born in the countryside cannot permanently leave their villages, and familial pressure for young women to marry by their late twenties, the dagongmei are transient labor. They undertake physically exhausting work in urban factories for an average of four or five years before returning home. The young women are not coerced to work in the factories; they know about the twelve-hour shifts and the hardships of industrial labor. Yet they are still eager to leave home. Made in China is a compelling look at the lives of these women, workers caught between the competing demands of global capitalism, the socialist state, and the patriarchal family.Pun Ngai conducted ethnographic work at an electronics factory in southern China’s Guangdong province, in the Shenzhen special economic zone where foreign-owned factories are proliferating. For eight months she slept in the employee dormitories and worked on the shop floor alongside the women whose lives she chronicles. Pun illuminates the workers’ perspectives and experiences, describing the lure of consumer desire and especially the minutiae of factory life. She looks at acts of resistance and transgression in the workplace, positing that the chronic pains—such as backaches and headaches—that many of the women experience are as indicative of resistance to oppressive working conditions as they are of defeat. Pun suggests that a silent social revolution is underway in China and that these young migrant workers are its agents.

Capitalism from Below Markets and Institutional Change in China

More than 630 million Chinese have escaped poverty since the 1980s, reducing the fraction remaining from 82 to 10 percent of the population. This astonishing decline in poverty, the largest in history, coincided with the rapid growth of a private enterprise economy. Yet private enterprise in China emerged in spite of impediments set up by the Chinese government. How did private enterprise overcome these initial obstacles to become the engine of China's economic miracle? Where did capitalism come from?
Studying over 700 manufacturing firms in the Yangzi region, Victor Nee and Sonja Opper argue that China's private enterprise economy bubbled up from below. Through trial and error, entrepreneurs devised institutional innovations that enabled them to decouple from the established economic order to start up and grow small, private manufacturing firms. Barriers to entry motivated them to build their own networks of suppliers and distributors, and to develop competitive advantage in self-organized industrial clusters. Close-knit groups of like-minded people participated in the emergence of private enterprise by offering financing and establishing reliable business norms.
This rapidly growing private enterprise economy diffused throughout the coastal regions of China and, passing through a series of tipping points, eroded the market share of state-owned firms. Only after this fledgling economy emerged as a dynamic engine of economic growth, wealth creation, and manufacturing jobs did the political elite legitimize it as a way to jump-start China's market society. Today, this private enterprise economy is one of the greatest success stories in the history of capitalism.

SHANGHAI • Lucas Bjerregaard is learning how to deal with the pressure of playing from the front, and closing in on a maiden European Tour title, too.
The Dane heads into the weekend with a three-stroke lead at the BMW Masters after carding a 6-under 66 in Friday's second round.
Bjerregaard trailed overnight leader Sergio Garcia for much of the day before surging into the lead with three birdies in his last four holes to match his opening-round score. He's now shot below 70 in 12 of his last 13 rounds since mid-October, going a combined 47 under.
Garcia, meanwhile, ran into trouble on his back nine on a cold, blustery day at Lake Malaren Golf Club. He bogeyed No. 12 and hit into the water on No. 13 for a double-bogey, falling four strokes back.
Bjerregaard has been in top form this autumn, posting four top-10 finishes on the European Tour and falling just short of capturing his first title at the Hong Kong Open three weeks ago. Playing in the final group, the 24-year-old Dane led Justin Rose by a stroke down the stretch before a double-bogey gave victory to the Englishman.
Still, it was a far better finish than the last time Bjerregaard played in the final group on a Sunday at the Alfred Dunhill Championship last December — he collapsed with a 17-over 89 in the final round.
"It was nice in Hong Kong to prove to myself and prove to everyone else that I can still compete up there, so hopefully I can do that again this week and just come up one place better than last time," Bjerregaard said.
Ian Poulter (68), Paul Casey (69) and An Byeong-hun (71) were tied for fourth at 8 under on Friday, while Peter Uihlein (66) sank seven straight birdies to jump into a tie for seventh at 7 under with Ross Fisher (71).
Playing alongside Bjerregaard, Uihlein began his birdie spree on the par-5 15th hole and narrowly missed matching the European Tour record of eight consecutive birdies when his 20-foot putt on the par-3 fourth hole slid just to the right of the cup.
"I was cheering him on," Bjerregaard said. "I was really hoping that would go in."
Uihlein started the day in a tie for 48th place but is suddenly only five strokes off the pace going into the weekend.
"It was weird. I was level-par going into 15, 1 over for the day, and I felt like I played 24 holes really, really well," the American said. "I felt like there was going to be a surge coming and I didn't know it would be seven in a row, but I'm pleased it was."
Garcia, who shot 64 on Thursday, made three birdies in a blemish-free front nine to get to 11 under before faltering on No. 12 and 13. His second shot on the par-5 15th found the bunker next to the green, but he made a nice recovery to birdie the hole and get a stroke back.

With a No. 10 jersey of the national team’s captain for visiting Editor-in-Chief He Ping of China's official Xinhua News Agency, Argentinean Vice President and Senate Head Amado Boudou expressed the warmth and hospitality of the second largest soccer nation in Latin America.
During the meeting on Nov. 13 in capital city Buenos Aires, He Ping in return presented a classic porcelain plate as gift for Boudou to celebrate his upcoming birthday.
Amid frankness and friendliness, He Ping briefed Boudou about China’s recent development and future aims.
(Soundbite) He Ping, Editor-in-Chief of Xinhua News Agency
“China's economy maintains consistent and stable growth. We have a 6.9% growth rate for the first three quarters of this year, which is a relatively high speed in world perspective. I think it helps stabilize the world economy.”
He Ping’s two-day visit trailed the signing of a cooperative agreement between Xinhua and the Senate in July for information exchange and enhancement of mutual understanding.
Xinhua’s nearly 40-year presence in Argentina has already borne rich fruits, as can be seen from the LED screen in downtown Buenos Aires that displays Xinhua news updates and information 24 hours a day.

A dark matter particle explorer satellite developed by Chinese scientists is to be transported it to the site from which it will be launched in December.
The satellite, made by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the rocket that will carry it were packaged and loaded onto a train bound for the launch center.
The satellite and its solar panels were separately packaged into two containers. An extra container has a protective system that maintains the temperature at 20 degrees Celsius and humidity level at 35 to 50 percent.
The containers are tightly sealed as the devices inside require high levels of cleanliness. During their journey to the launch center, the devices are being monitored and controlled by personnel on a separate carriage to ensure that they stay in a safe environment.
The dark matter particle explorer, the first of its series, will be launched at the end of the year and have the widest observation spectrum and highest energy resolution of any dark-matter probe in the world. It will observe the direction, energy and electric charge of high-energy particles in space in search of dark matter, according to the chief scientist of the project.
Dark matter is one of the most important mysteries of physics. Scientists believe in its existence based on the law of universal gravitation, but have never directly detected it.

China firmly opposes any acts that harm China's sovereignty under the pretext of freedom of navigation or overflight at South China Sea, said a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Friday.
Hong Lei, the spokesman, made the remarks during a daily briefing in Beijing, in response to media reports that two U.S. B-52 bombers recently flew close to China's islands in the South China Sea.
"China has learned about relevant information. I would like to reiterate that China respects other countries' freedom of navigation and overflight at the South China Sea according to the International Law, but firmly opposes any acts made by any country, under the pretext of freedom of navigation or overflight at South China Sea, to actually violate the International Law and harm China's sovereignty and security interests," Hong said.

China took a bold action on Tuesday, resulting in the biggest one-day drop in the value of its currency since a massive devaluation in 1994. The country devalued the Yuan by 1.9% -- a fall it said was due to changes aimed at making the way it sets exchange rates more market-oriented. It comes just after new data released showed a weakening of trade in the world’s second largest economy. Ameera David weighs in.
Then, Ameera is joined by CCTV business reporter Shraysi Tandon. Shraysi tells us what she thinks is the main drivers behind the decision to devalue the Chinese currency and gives us her take on if the government is panicking.
After the break, Bianca Facchinei takes a look at the new agreement struck between Greece and it’s European creditors. The deal includes securing €86 billion to Greece over a three-year period, as long as they impose a number of economic reforms, like deregulating the natural gas market.
Afterwards, Ameera and Erin Ade talk about Google’s new parent company, Alphabet. Erin tells us why Google is reorganizing and explains why some people have compared the move to Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway.
And in The Big Deal, Ameera and Edward Harrison continue the discussion on China.

Most international law experts believe that China's so-called "indisputable sovereignty" over its maritime claim in the South China Sea has little merit, and is illegal under the United Convention on the Law of the Sea. The United States said that China's expansive claim increases the risk of confrontation, undermines regional stability, and dims the prospects for diplomacy, and paved the way for "US pivot" to Pacific. Philippines declares the claim is illegal and violates Philippines' and other nations' sovereign rights under UNCLOS. The Vietnamese president said that it has no legal foundation and scientific basis and rejected China's assertion. China defends its claim citing historical basis, most of which were taken from its imperial archives and ancient records. It has recently intensified its claim in the South China Sea which many believe to be a "gunboat diplomacy" against its weaker maritime neighbors.
South China Sea is composed of three main areas: Spratlys, (the biggest); Paracel, (the next biggest); and Scarborough Shoal (the smallest). All of them are being claimed by People's Republic of China and Taiwan. Spratlys is also being claimed partly by the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, and Indonesia; Scarborough by the Philippines; and Paracel by Vietnam.
CORRECTION: Indonesia is not a claimant of the Spratlys. Natuna Islands, an Indonesian territory in the northwestern waters of Borneo and which China also claims is not part of the Spratlys.

The Qin empire was founded at end of a war between a few powers that had lasted for more than two centuries. And it was the result of a development that created a highly centralized bureaucratic state out of a loose feudal system. While the rule of the two Qin emperors endured not even two decades, it marks nonetheless the beginning of a more than two thousand years long history of a centralized state with an emperor being the head of thousands of officers in a state with a likewise uniform culture.
Literature, thought, religion and philosophy
Apart from his great achievements that were actually the base for the foundation also of the Han empire, the First Emperor was blamed to have burned the books (fen “burning” might be a writing error for the character jin “prohibiting”) and buried alive the (Confucian) scholars. The only books that were not forbidden, are writings about medicine, herbs, divining and agriculture. Inspite of later slanderings by Han time scholars which made him not only a murderer but also a bastard of a merchant, arts and thinking were still going on under the First Emperor and prepared the great flourishing of literature and philosophy under the Han Dynasty.
Although the practical polity of the Qin rulers was legist and thus severe, bureaucratic and austere, the inscriptions in the steles the First Emperor had erected, also show that Confucian thinking like filial piety, humanity and righteousness of the ruler was still going on. The emperor himself was very interested in Daoist practices to prolong his life or to gain immortality. He sent out an expedition to search for the islands of immortality called Penglai. Generations of scholars tried to find out what country was meant with “Penglai” , some say, Japan, some even argue Penglai was America. After the proclamation as the First Emperor, he changed the official colors to black according to the theory of the Five Elements and their cosmic influence. Metors, flood and drought was a heavenly hint to him as well as it has been to the former Zhou kings. A comprehensive anthology of philosophical thinking around 250 BC is the “Spring and Autumn collection of Master Lü” Lüshi Chunqiu, compiled by the chancellor Lü Buwei.
Like the Zhou Dynasty, the Qin Dynasty’s homelands were in the far west, between nomadic tribes, giving it probably more warfare energy than the people of the states in the Yellow River basin. One king of Qin is said to have died from an injury sustained during a contest in lifting a bronze vessel.
Hundred Schools of Thought
In the turbulent Spring and Autumn Period (770-476BC) and Warring States Period (475-221BC), many schools of thought were flourishing. The four most influential schools of thought that evolved during this period were Confucianism, Taoism, Mohism, and Legalism. There were also other schools like Yin & Yang, Eclectics, Logicians, Coalition persuaders and Militarism. The hundred schools of thought showed the fierce political and class struggles for survival among regional wars between the rising landed class and slaveholder class. The flouring thoughts intensified activities and debates in the intellectual and ideology system in ancient China and exerted great influence on Chinese culture.
Confucianism
Confucius was the founder of Confucianism. He advocated a set of moral code on basis of five merits: benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom and trustworthiness. Among them, benevolence was considered as the cornerstone, which stands for faithfulness, filial piety, tolerance and kindness. He also requested people to keep in good harmony with each other and establish a community ruled by standard manners and behavior.
Mencius (372-289BC) was a Confucian in the Warring States Period (475-221BC). He repeatedly tried to convince rulers that the ruler should cultivate moral perfection in order to set a good example to the people and the ruler who governed benevolently would earn the respect of the people. He held the view that human nature was fundamentally good as everyone is born with the ability to recognize what is right and act upon it. He also believed that people were more important than rulers.

In a week where all headlines were focused on Greece's economy, another financial crisis has been competing for the world's attention - shares on China's stock markets have nosedived, prompting fears of the biggest financial disaster since the 1929 Wall Street crash.
More than $3.2 trillion has been wiped out in less than a month - an amount more than 10 times the size of the entire Greek economy.
The Chinese government has issued an emergency response, signalling serious concern about the crisis.
Beijing has unveiled plans to lend billions to Chinese brokerage firms and has even allowed basic pension funds to invest in the markets.
Despite these attempts to help the flagging economy, over a 1,000 companies have halted trading on mainland Chinese exchanges.
Andrew Kenningham, a senior global economist, at Capital Economics joins Counting the Cost to talk about the fallout from China's stock market crash.
Can Muhammadu Buhari turn Nigeria around?
In a milestone for Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari was elected president in April, becoming the first person to unseat a democratically elected Nigerian president through the ballot box.
The 72-year-old made numerous election pledges - including plans to stop the armed group Boko Haram.
Despite being Africa's largest economy, the UN estimates that 67 percent of the population lives in poverty, most of whom are based in the impoverished north where the group has a strong support base.
Charles Nwodo Jnr, the executive chairman at XL Africa group joins Counting the Cost to discuss what Buhari must to do to turn the country around.

Sometimes we have no choice, we work till dawn. When you work all night you become dizzy and your eyes hurt because you can't take any breaks. SANTA'S WORKSHOP takes you to the real world of China's toy factories. Workers tell us about long working hours, low wages, and dangerous work places. Those who protest or try to organize trade unions risk imprisonment. Low labor costs attract more and more companies to China. Today more than 75% of our toys are made in China. But this industry takes its toll on the workers and on the environment.
The European (and American) buyers blame bad conditions on the Chinese suppliers. But they say that increasingly hard competition gives them no option. Who should we believe? And what can you do to bring about a fairer and more humane toy trade?
