Russian security services have killed 11 Islamist militants who had been helping smuggle fighters across borders to Syria to join Islamic State, the country's anti-terrorism committee said.
It said the militants were holed up in a fortified base in a wooded, mountainous area of the Kabardino-Balkaria republic in southern Russia, near the city of Nalchik.
"The armed group organized channels for residents of the republic to be sent to the territory of the Syrian Arabic Republic so that they could take part in activities by terrorist groups," the anti-terrorism committee said in a statement.
Russia began a large-scale bombing campaign against targets in Syria on Sept. 30, which Moscow says is focused on Islamic State militants but critics say targets a wider band of opponents of Moscow's ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The focus on Islamic State has intensified since a Russian airliner was brought down by a bomb over Egypt's Sinai peninsula with the loss of over 200 lives. The group says it planted the bomb as a response to actions by the Russian Air Force and predicted more attacks on Russia.
The anti-terrorism committee said the militants were also preparing a series of attacks in the North Caucasus region.
Moscow has for many years battled to quell an insurgency by militants in the North Caucasus, a patchwork of mainly Muslim republics on Russia's southern rim, where separatists fought two wars in the 1990s.

The Battle of Aleppo (Arabic: معركة حلب) is an ongoing military confrontation in Aleppo, the largest city in Syria, between the Free Syrian Army, Islamic Front, People's Defence Units and Sunni militants against the Syrian government, Hezbollah and Shiite militants. The battle began on 19 July 2012 as a part of the Syrian Civil War. The battle's scale and importance led combatants to name it the "mother of battles". The battle has been marked by the Syrian army's indiscriminate use of barrel bombs dropped from helicopters, killing to terrorist.

Muhammad Maghout was credited as the father of the Arabic free verse poetry, liberating the Arabic poems from the traditional form and revolutionizing the structure of the poem. He wrote for theater, TV and cinema. Maghout's work combined satire with descriptions of social misery and malaise, illustrating what he viewed as an ethical decline among rulers in the region. Some of his themes included the problems of injustice and totalitarian governments.

Latakia airbase: the hub of Russia’s Syrian bombing campaign

Since the end of September Russia has carried out daily strikes against targets in Syria that it considers to be terrorists. Euronews correspondant Denis Loctier is embedded with the Russian air force in Latakia:
“Euronews got access onto the Russian airbase in Latakia on Syria’s Mediterranean coast. All the Russian military planes in Syria take off from here, making more than 40 sorties each day. The officials claim that in the past six weeks these planes have destroyed more than 2500 objects of what they call terrorist infrastructure on Syrian soil,” he reports.
Russian warplanes in Syria act as air support for ground offensives by the Syrian army and foreign Shiite militias. The Russians say they are now also cooperating with elements of the Syrian opposition which provides some intelligence. This, according to Major General Igor Konashenkov, allowed Islamist militants in several key provinces to be pushed back in the last two days, breaking the two-year blockade of the Kweires airbase by ISIS.
“The Russian aviation hit targets near Aleppo and around the Kweires airbase using the intelligence provided by the Syrian opposition, and confirmed at the Intelligence centre in Baghdad by our partners from Iran, Iraq and Syria,” said Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov.
The Hmeymim airbase near Latakia has several dozen Russian warplanes, including supersonic bombers and fighters, as well as reconnaissance drones, attack helicopters and anti-aircraft defence. The exact quantities of military equipment and personnel remain top secret. The base receives all its supplies, including food, from Russia.
“All our planes based in Hmeymim and taking part in the battles are equipped with the most modern targeting systems. This allows targeting terrorist infrastructure precisely from an altitude of over 5000 metres,” claims Konashenkov.
Despite several setbacks in the last few days, Islamist militants retain their grasp over large parts of Syria and occasionally pass onto the offensive, while the forces loyal to president Assad are struggling to defend and expand their zone of control. According to the Russian military, the Islamists are now changing their tactics in reaction to the bombing campaign, better concealing their relocations better and constantly modifying routes for arms and ammunition supply, which may indicate they are weakening.
“Russian command says these attack aircraft will keep striking targets as long as necessary – but with no evident change on the ground, the efficacy of Russian involvement in the Syrian conflict remains questionable,” concludes Denis Loctier.

STORY: Syrian soldiers looked triumphant after the re-capture of an air base in the northern Aleppo province from Islamic State, Syrian state television showed on Wednesday (November 11).
The troops fought their way into the facility on Tuesday (November 10) and freed military personnel inside, state television said, after a nearly two-year siege by the insurgents.
A military source close to the government said the army was working to secure the Kweires air base in Aleppo Province, where soldiers and officers have been under attack since 2013.
It is the most high-profile victory for Syria's army since Russia launched an air campaign in support of President Bashar al-Assad on September 30.
State television showed footage of a reporter in fatigue clothing driving through the area, and greeting and hugging soldiers.
The military source said hundreds of soldiers were freed.
Syrian state media said that President Bashar al-Assad congratulated the head of the military air base for the steadfastness of the troops and also the commander of the offensive which broke the siege.
The head of the air base Major General Monzer Zmam said the phone call by Assad "was a moment of pride for the academy".
Other soldiers too dedicated the victory to Assad and to colleagues killed or injured.
Britain-based monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, also said that an advance party of troops had reached the air base and "broken the siege."
Syrian troops have also been supported by Iranian forces and Lebanese Hezbollah fighters in a push to regain territory, largely in the north, lost to insurgents during almost five years of conflict.
Rebels have frustrated a campaign to reclaim territory elsewhere in the country, where Russian jets have flown more than 1,600 sorties in little over a month.
The breaking of the Kweires siege stood in stark contrast to Islamic State's capture of Tabqa air base in Raqqa province in the north of the country last year, when militants killed scores of soldiers.

“Latakia mourns the victims of the shelling which killed and wounded dozens of citizens in the city centre. The authorities of this coastal province believe that the shelling is in retaliation for recent successes of the Syrian army,” said euronews’s Denis Loctier reporting from Latakia as part of a media facility provided by the Russian and Syrian government.
On Tuesday (Nov 10) at least 23 people were killed and 60 wounded in two explosions in the city said to have been rocket fire.
The Syrian government called it a “terrorist attack”. Rebels have in recent months targeted Latakia which lies in Syrian President Assad’s western heartland.
Spokesman for Latakia’s city government Ibrahim Khodr Al-Salem,condemned the shelling.
“We don’t care what’s the name of that particular group – for us they’re all terrorists. Some of them are linked to Al-Qaida, others to other terror groups on Syrian territory.” “And they’re still getting support from Turkey and the Western countries, as well as Gulf states.”
Earlier on the same day as the attack, Syrian military sources said government forces had broken a two year siege by ISIL militants on an airbase near Aleppo. It was the most high profile victory for Syrian troops since Russia launched an air campaign in support of President Bashar al-Assad.

Huge Syrian Airstrike Bombs rain down on supposed jihadist hideout in Darayya Syria
Bomb falls directly into ISIS bomb attack
The Syrian Civil War (Arabic: الحرب الأهلية السورية) is an ongoing international armed conflict taking place in Syria. The unrest began in the early spring of 2011 within the context of Arab Spring protests, with nationwide protests against President Bashar al-Assad's government, whose forces responded with violent crackdowns. The conflict gradually morphed from prominent protests to an armed rebellion after months of military sieges.
The Syrian government had mainly relied on its armed forces, but since 2014 local protection units made up of volunteers known as National Defence Force came to play a bigger role, gradually becoming the primary military force of the Syrian state. From the early stages, the Syrian government received technical, financial, military and political support from Russia, Iran and Iraq. In 2013, Iran-backed Hezbollah entered the war in support of the Syrian Army. In September 2015, Russia, Iraq, Iran and Syria set up a joint operation room (information centre) in Baghdad to coordinate their activity in Syria. On 30 September 2015, Russia started its own air campaign on the side and at the request of the government of Syria. The resultant proxy war waged between the U.S. and Russia led some commentators to characterise the situation as a "a proto-world war with nearly a dozen countries embroiled in two overlapping conflicts".
In July 2013, the Syrian government was said to be in control of approximately 30–40% of the country's territory and 60% of the Syrian population; in August 2015, the territory fully controlled by Assad’s forces was reported to have shrunk to 29,797 km2, roughly a sixth of the country. In certain regions under government control Syrian government enjoys high levels of support; according to a poll organised by British ORB-international, up to 73% percent of the population in government-controlled areas support the government effort.

Syria civil war - South Front - Analysis And Intelligence
The Syrian Civil War (Arabic: الحرب الأهلية السورية) is an ongoing international[77] armed conflict taking place in Syria.
The Syrian Civil War (Arabic: الحرب الأهلية السورية), also known as the Syrian Uprising, is an ongoing armed conflict taking place in Syria. The unrest began in the early spring of 2011 within the context of Arab Spring protests, with nationwide protests against President Bashar al-Assad's government, whose forces responded with violent crackdowns. The conflict gradually morphed from popular protests to an armed rebellion after months of military sieges.[71]
The armed opposition consists of various groups that were formed during the course of the conflict, primarily the Free Syrian Army, which was the first to take up arms in 2011, and the Islamic Front formed in 2013. In 2013, Hezbollah entered the war in support of the Syrian army.[72][73] In the east, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a jihadist militant group originating from Iraq, made very rapid military gains in both Syria and Iraq, eventually conflicting with the other rebels. In July 2014, ISIL controlled a third of Syria's territory and most of its oil and gas production, thus establishing itself as the major opposition force.[74]
By July 2013, the Syrian government was in control of approximately 30–40% of the country's territory and 60% of the Syrian population.[75] A United Nations report in late 2012 described the conflict as being "overtly sectarian in nature", between mostly Alawite government forces, militias and other Shia groups[76] fighting largely against Sunni-dominated rebel groups,[77][78] although both opposition and government forces have denied it.[79][80] Due to foreign involvement this conflict has been called a proxy war.[81]
As of April 2014 the death toll had risen above 190,000.[82] International organizations have accused forces on all sides of severe human rights violations, with many massacres occurring.[83][84] Chemical weapons have been used many times during the conflict as well.[85][86] Government forces are reportedly responsible for the majority of civilian casualties, often through bombings.[87] In addition, tens of thousands of protesters and activists have been imprisoned and there are reports of torture in state prisons.[88]
The severity of the humanitarian disaster in Syria has been outlined by the UN and many international organizations. More than 6.5 million Syrians have been displaced, more than 3 million Syrians have fled the country to countries such as Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Egypt, and Iraq and become refugees, and millions more have been left in poor living conditions with shortages of food and drinking water. At the end of August 2014, 35,000 refugees were awaiting registration, while estimates of several hundred thousand more were not included in official figures as they were unregistered.

Captagon, a highly addictive amphetamine, is the drug of choice for Syria's revolutionaries. We trace the drug trail, from its users on battlefields, along Lebanese smuggling routes, to the kingpins at the top of the chain.
"If the commander told me to attack a military barracks, I will do it with a brave heart and without any fear", a Syrian fighter describers the powerful and intoxicating effects of Captagon. Combatants on both sides are reportedly turning to the stimulant to help them keep fighting. Tracing the smuggling routes back to Lebanon and unique access to a factory where the drug is produced reveals the scale of the drug's popularity. Although they risk life sentences, workers at the Captagon factory are producing "half a million to a million pills per week", a large proportion destined for Syria's fighters. And at the very top of the chain, a wealthy kingpin explains how the "800 million dollar industry" is directly fuelling the Syrian conflict, as profits are funnelled back to militias on the front lines.

Miseries of Syrian Refugees | Documentary | Arabic & Punjabi
Refugees of the Syrian Civil War, widely referred to as the Syrian refugees, are Syrian nationals, who have fled Syria with the escalation of the Syrian Civil War. To escape the violence, more than four million Syrian refugees have fled the country to neighboring Turkey,Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq, while thousands also ended up in more distant countries of the Caucasus, the Persian Gulf, North Africa and Europe. As of February 2015, Turkey has become the world's biggest refugee hosting country with 2.1 million Syrian refugees and had spent more than US$6 billion on direct assistance to refugees.
The refugee crisis began in 2011, when thousands of Syrian citizens fled across the border to Lebanon and Turkey. By early July 2011, 15,000 Syrian citizens had taken shelter in tent cities, set up in the Yayladağı, Reyhanlı and Altınözü districts of Hatay Province, near Turkey's border with Syria. By the end of that month, 5,000 of the refugees had returned to Syria. However, by late June 2011, the number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon had reached around 10,000 people. By mid-July 2011, the first Syrian refugees found sanctuary in Jordan, with their numbers reaching 1,500 by December
On July 9, 2015, the UNHCR reported that the number of Syrian refugees has surged over 4,000,000 people, mostly residing in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq.
During the first half of 2015, large numbers of Syrian refugees crossed into European Union member states, reaching 313,000 UNHCR applications across Europe by early August 2015. The largest numbers were recorded in Germany with over 89,000 and Sweden with over 62,000 in early August.
More than 100,000 refugees crossed the European Union's borders in July alone. Syrians formed the largest group of refugees to Europe.
According to The Times, "Jean-Claude Juncker, the European Commission president, is to table a plan to relocate 160,000 asylum seekers from Hungary, Italy and Greece across the European Union. The proposal will include binding quotas to impose more than 55,000 refugees on countries opposed to his scheme."
The BBC reported that "despite their proximity to Syria, no Syrians claiming asylum have been taken in by Saudi Arabia or other wealthy Gulf countries."[130] The BBC also reported that "most successful cases are Syrians already in Gulf states extending their stays, or those entering because they have family there."There are conflicting reports of Saudi Arabia's version. According to the The Guardian, "Saudi Arabia has said reports about its response to the Syrian refugee crisis are “false and misleading” and it has in fact given residency to 100,000 people as war rages in their country. No Gulf country has signed the UN Convention on Refugees, which sets standards for the treatment and rights of those fleeing to a new country."[10] According to the UNHCR's representative for the Gulf region, there are 500,000 Syrians in Saudi Arabia, but in "official documentation they are referred to as “Arab brothers and sisters in distress”" and not as Syrian nationals. While Al Jazeera and Arab News, on 12 Sep 2015, reported that Saudi Foreign ministry official says nation has received nearly 2.5 million Syrians since 2011. Though there were no evidence to authenticate this statement or prove it.
European migrant crisis
Under the Dublin Regulation, if a person that had filed for asylum in one EU country illegally crosses borders to another country, they shall be returned to the former. During the 2015 European migrant crisis, Hungary became overburdened by asylum applications to the point that it stopped on 23 June 2015 receiving back its applicants who later crossed the borders to other EU countries and were detained there. On 24 August 2015, Germany decided to suspend the Dublin Regulation as regards Syrian refugees and to process their asylum applications directly itself. On 2 September 2015, the Czech Republic also decided to defy the Dublin Regulation and to offer Syrian refugees who have already applied for asylum in other EU countries and who reach the country to either have their application processed in the Czech Republic

From the Arabian Peninsula, we look at an ancient caravan route through the desert to Syria. ; Along the way, several lush oases in the otherwise barren Syrian desert come to our rescue in the form of Marib and Petra, cite of the great tomb of Aaron that is carved out of a rock face, along with the beautiful city of Palmyra in Syria.
Early development
The period from the middle of the 2nd millennium BCE to the beginning of the Common Era saw societies in Western Asia, the Mediterranean, China and the Indian subcontinent develop major transportation networks for trade.
One of the vital instruments which facilitated long distance trade was portage and the domestication of beasts of burden. Organized caravans, visible by the 2nd millennium BCE, could carry goods across a large distance as fodder was mostly available along the way. The domestication of camels allowed Arabian nomads to control the long distance trade in spices and silk from the Far East to the Arabian Peninsula. Caravans were useful in long-distance trade largely for carrying luxury goods, the transportation of cheaper goods across large distances was not profitable for caravan operators. With productive developments in iron and bronze technologies, newer trade routes—dispensing innovations of civilizations—began to rise.
Maritime trade
Evidence of maritime trade between civilizations dates back at least two millennia. Navigation was known in Sumer between the 4th and the 3rd millennium BCE, and was probably known by the Indians and the Chinese people before the Sumerians. The Egyptians had trade routes through the Red Sea, importing spices from the "Land of Punt" (East Africa) and from Arabia.
Evolution of Indian trade networks. The main map shows the routes since Mughal times, Inset A shows the major prehistorical cultural currents, B: pre-Mauryan routes, C: Mauryan routes, D: routes c. 1st century CE, and E: the "Z" shaped region of developed roads.
Maritime trade began with safer coastal trade and evolved with the manipulation of the monsoon winds, soon resulting in trade crossing boundaries such as the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. South Asia had multiple maritime trade routes which connected it to Southeast Asia, thereby making the control of one route resulting in maritime monopoly difficult. Indian connections to various Southeast Asian states buffered it from blockages on other routes. By making use of the maritime trade routes, bulk commodity trade became possible for the Romans in the 2nd century BCE. A Roman trading vessel could span the Mediterranean in a month at one-sixtieth the cost of over-land routes.
Visible trade routes
The peninsula of Anatolia lay on the commercial land routes to Europe from Asia as well as the sea route from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. Records from the 19th century BCE attest to the existence of an Assyrian merchant colony at Kanesh in Cappadocia (now in modern Turkey). Trading networks of the Old World included the Grand Trunk Road of India and the Incense Road of Arabia. A transportation network consisting of hard-surfaced highways, using concrete made from volcanic ash and lime, was built by the Romans as early as 312 BCE, during the times of the Censor Appius Claudius Caecus. Parts of the Mediterranean world, Roman Britain, Tigris-Euphrates river system and North Africa fell under the reach of this network at some point of their history.

The Syrian Civil War (Arabic: الحرب الأهلية السورية), also known as the Syrian Revolution (Arabic: الثورة السورية), is an ongoing armed conflict taking place in Syria. The unrest began in the early spring of 2011 within the context of Arab Spring protests, with nationwide protests against President Bashar al-Assad's government, whose forces responded with violent crackdowns. The conflict gradually morphed from prominent protests to an armed rebellion after months of military sieges.[73]
The armed opposition consists of various groups that were formed during the course of the conflict, primarily the Free Syrian Army, which was the first to take up arms in 2011, and the Islamic Front, formed in 2013. In 2013, Hezbollah entered the war in support of the Syrian Army.[74][75] In the east, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a jihadist militant group originating from Iraq, made rapid military gains in both Syria and Iraq, eventually conflicting with the other rebels. By July 2014, ISIL controlled a third of Syria's territory and most of its oil and gas production, thus establishing itself as the major opposition force
