While the rains have subsided, the city and other parts of Tamil Nadu are yet to recover from the flooding caused by the heaviest rains in a century that claimed over 300 lives and forced the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to undertake its most massive flood relief operation ever. However, AIADMK denied any such forceful act. “We are allowing every single volunteer to enter the specified area and supply relief materials. Nobody is stopping them. Its a false propanganda,” said the first official cited earlier, who is leading the rescue operations from RK Nagar, the constituency from where Jayalalithaa won the by-elections this year. The official said Jayalalithaa’s photos were pasted only on relief materials provided by the state government agencies. “But we are not forcing anyone to paste chief minister’s photograph on materials organised by others. If found, we will take strict action against them. As I see, all volunteers are allowed to supply dresses, food and other materials without any restriction. These are baseless allegations,” the official added. However, the AIADMK’s official website and Twitter handle did not have any details of the proposed plan against AIADMK workers. “Nobody need to oblige such nonsensical request like placing party stickers in relief material. This may be one off and due to some over excited party guy,” wrote an AIADMK party worker in a Twitter post. Relief inadequate, says Opposition Leaders of Opposition parties made a strong case for augmenting flood relief measures and monetary relief to the affected people, arguing that the State government’s measures were not adequate. “The government failed to take precautionary measures in the beginning and started relief works very late. As the State government is just trying to satisfy the flood victims, we have launched our own distribution,” DMK leader M. Karunanidhi said on Monday. PMK leader S. Ramadoss said the government’s proposed relief of Rs 5,000, a dhoti and 10 kg rice per family was nothing when compared to the disaster caused by the flood. “The relief for paddy should be Rs 25,000 per acre and Rs 75,000 for cash crops,” he said. As students were severely affected and would be left with no congenial atmosphere to prepare for the examination, all SSLC and Plus-Two students should be promoted this year, he said. CPI (M) State secretary G. Ramakrishnan demanded waiving of electricity and telephone bills for a month. CPI state secretary R. Mutharasan said the State government should convene a special session of the Assembly to fix the quantum of relief for victims.
