The End of Social Science as We Know it | Brian Epstein | TEDxStanford

His research on the metaphysics of the social world lead him to ask fundamental questions such as what are languages, what are banks, or artifacts? Why should we care? Philosopher Brian Epstein warns that without significant changes, social sciences as we know it will become irrelevant and obsolete. His research on the metaphysics of the social world lead him to ask fundamental questions such as what are languages, what are banks, or artifacts? Why should we care? Because according to Epstein, asking and answering such questions are the only way we can fix the foundations of social sciences.
Brian Epstein received his doctorate in philosophy from Stanford University, his master's in philosophy from Oxford University, and graduated summa cum laude with an AB in philosophy from Princeton University.
Brian Epstein's research interests include philosophy of social science, metaphysics and philosophy of language, focusing in particular on issues in the theory of reference and the ontology of social kinds. He also has interests in conceptual schemes, the philosophy of music and the philosophy of economics. Between degree programs, he worked at a number of technology startups and consulting firms. His interests outside philosophy include music and sound production, hiking and photographing ducks.

If You're So Free, Why Do You Follow Others? The Sociological Science Behind Social Networks and Social Influence.
Nicholas Christakis, Professor of Medical Sociology, Medicine, and Sociology at Harvard University
If you think you're in complete control of your destiny or even your own actions, you're wrong. Every choice you make, every behavior you exhibit, and even every desire you have finds its roots in the social universe. Nicholas Christakis explains why individual actions are inextricably linked to sociological pressures; whether you're absorbing altruism performed by someone you'll never meet or deciding to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge, collective phenomena affect every aspect of your life. By the end of the lecture Christakis has revealed a startling new way to understand the world that ranks sociology as one of the most vitally important social sciences.

Speaker(s): Professor Kenneth Benoit, Kenneth Cukier
Chair: Professor Simon Hix
Recorded on 16 February 2015 in Hong Kong Theatre, Clement House.
The ubiquity of "big data" about social, political and economic phenomena has the potential to transform the way we approach social science. In this talk, Professor Benoit outlines the challenges and opportunities to social sciences caused by the rise of big data, with applications and examples. He discusses the rise of the field of data science, and whether this is a threat or a blessing for the traditional social scientific model and its ability to help us better understand society.
Kenneth Benoit (@kenbenoit) is currently Professor of Quantitative Social Research Methods at LSE. He is also Part-Time Professor in the Department of Political Science at Trinity College Dublin, and has previously held a position at the Central European University (Budapest). He is currently Principal Investigator on 5-year grant funded by the European Research Council entitled QUANTESS: Quantitative Text Analysis for the Social Sciences.
Kenneth Cukier (@kncukier) is the Data Editor at The Economist, following a decade at the paper covering business and technology, and as a foreign correspondent (most recently in Japan from 2007-12). Previously he was the technology editor of the Wall Street Journal Asia in Hong Kong and worked at the International Herald Tribune in Paris. In 2002-04 he was a research fellow at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. He is the co-author of "Big Data: A Revolution that Will Transform How We Work, Live and Think" (2013) and "Learning with Big Data: The Future of Education" (2014) with Viktor Mayer-Schönberger.
Simon Hix (@simonjhix) is Professor of European and Comparative Politics and Head of Department of Government at LSE.

Chair: Professor Conor Gearty
Recorded on 3 February 2015 in New Theatre, East Building.
In February 2014 the British Academy published Prospering Wisely, a multimedia resource which explores the nature of ‘prosperity’ in today’s world. It highlights the importance of thinking beyond simple measures such as GDP, showing how humanities and social science research fuels our modern knowledge-based economy, helps sustain our healthy, open democracy and contributes to human and cultural wellbeing and ‘the good life’. At the heart of this contribution is the vital role played by research, epitomised by a renowned centre of research and teaching excellence such as the LSE. As a nation are we investing sufficiently in these drivers of future success and human progress? Are cuts in public expenditure imperilling the UK’s hard-won world-leading status?
Professor Julia Black is Pro-Director of Research at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Greg Clark (@gregclarkmp) is the Minister for Universities, Science and Cities and MP for Royal Tunbridge Wells.
Nicholas Stern is the President of the British Academy and the IG Patel Professor of Economics and Government at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Conor Gearty (@conorgearty) is Director of the Institute of Public Affairs and Professor of Human Rights Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
The Institute of Public Affairs (@LSEPubAffairs) is one of the world's leading centres of public policy. We aim to debate and address some of the major issues of our time, whether international or national, through our established teaching programmes, our research and our highly innovative public-engagement initiatives.
The British Academy (@britac_news) is an independent national academy of Fellows elected for their eminence in research and publication. It is the UK's expert body that supports and speaks for the humanities and social sciences.

Frank Salter is an Australian academic and researcher at the former Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Physiology. He is a political ethologist, studying political phenomena using the methods and theories of behavioral biology in addition to conventional methods. He is the author of six books. In the first hour, Frank explains how the social sciences were radicalized in universities as a way to gain control of the culture. We’ll talk about the university departments of sociology, cultural anthropology and political science which are devoid of biologically-oriented courses and why the focus is on gender, ethnicity, feminism, sex differences, national identity, ethno-cultural diversity, multiculturalism and immigration. Later, we talk about a few of the iconic people that are praised by today’s social sciences, several of whom are known to have falsified scientific results. Frank says we must inject fact back into culture. In the second hour, we’ll discuss the effects of the social sciences’ rejection of human nature and how it has impacted current politics and culture. We’ll discuss what may happen if we continue to deny human nature. Later, Frank talks about admitting harsh realities and what we can do to move forward.

Royce Gracie, a pioneer of mixed martial arts (MMA) and UFC Hall of Famer, is the 28th speaker in the University of Guam’s Presidential Lecture Series. e The lecture was held on Tuesday, November 17 in the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences (CLASS) Lecture Hall on the UOG Campus. Gracie’s lecture is entitled "The History and Philosophy of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu."
"The University is pleased to welcome modern sports icon Royce Gracie as our latest guest lecturer,” said Dr. Robert Underwood, UOG President. “Gracie’s contributions have helped develop Brazilian Jiu Jitsu into a worldwide phenomenon, with many in our local community practicing the martial art.”
Royce Gracie is one of the most prolific and influential mixed martial arts (MMA) athletes in the sport’s history. He became an “underdog” hero while changing the landscape of combat sports and revolutionizing martial arts.
After winning the first UFC tournaments (UFC1, UFC2, UFC4), he proved that with the knowledge of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a "David" could beat a "Goliath." Royce is the only fighter in modern MMA history to defeat four opponents in the same night; unlike today, these tournaments had no weight divisions, no time limits and no real rules. He holds the record for submission victories in the UFC at 11.
In 2003, Royce was the first fighter inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.

Hey, #Princeton2019
Our undergraduates want to hang out with you!
We know you’re eager to learn more about the academic opportunities at Princeton, and our students are excited to share with you their own educational experiences.
We invite you to join us for Google+ Hangouts On Air by academic interest. During this Hangout, current Princeton students representing the Humanities and social sciences will be taking your questions about major choices, certificate programs and the value of a liberal arts education.
You can log in with your Google account to ask questions live and up-vote questions via the Q&A; app on the right-hand side of the page. If you don't have a Google account, you'll need to create one to submit questions – it's quick and easy. If you can’t make the live session, you can watch later on the event page or on the University’s YouTube channel.
Our undergraduates will be taking your questions for 30-45 minutes, so please RSVP on the Google+ event page and join us next week to learn more about an academic choice of interest to you.
