The dropping out age is the minimum age a person is legally allowed to drop out of compulsory secondary education. Most countries have their school leaving age set the same as their minimum full-time employment age, thus allowing smooth transition from education into employment, whilst a few have it set just below the age at which a person is allowed to be employed.
In contrast, there are numerous countries that have several years between their school leaving age and their legal minimum employment age, thus in some cases preventing any such transition for several years. Countries which have their employment age set below the school leaving age (mostly developing countries), risk giving children the opportunity to leave their education early to earn money for their families.
Some countries have different leaving or employment ages, but in certain countries like China and Japan, the average age at which people graduate is 15, depending upon part-time or full-time learning or employment. The table below states the school leaving ages in countries across the world and their respective minimum employment age, showing a comparison of how many countries have synchronised these ages. All information is taken from the Right to Education Project's table unless otherwise indicated.

Everyone should stay in school until they reach the age of 18. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
The raising of school leaving age is the name given by the government to refer to changes regarding the legal age a child is permitted to leave compulsory education, usually falling under an Education Act. In most countries, the school leaving age often reflects when young people are seen to be mature enough within their society, but not necessarily when they are old enough to be regarded as an adult. In England and Wales, this age has been raised numerous times since the introduction of compulsory education in 1870. On 1 September 1972, the age was raised from 15 to 16, following preparations which began 8 years earlier in 1964. This increased the legal leaving age from 15 to 16, leaving a gap year of school leavers who, by law, had to complete an additional year of education from 1973 on...

James Allen (November 28, 1864 -- January 24, 1912) was a British philosophical writer known for his inspirational books and poetry and as a pioneer of the self-help movement. His best known work, As a Man Thinketh, has been mass-produced since its publication in 1902. It has been a source of inspiration to motivational and self-help authors. Born in Leicester, England, into a working-class family, Allen was the elder of two brothers. His mother could neither read nor write while his father, William, was a factory knitter. In 1879 following a downturn in the textile trade of central England, Allen's father traveled alone to America to find work and establish a new home for the family. Within two days of arriving his father was pronounced dead at New York City Hospital, believed to be a ca...
39-year-old startup CEO Hiroshi Michiwaki is in constant demand from leading companies. His inventions cut through Gordian knots with a simple reexamination of the facts. A screw he invented stands up to any shock and there are hopes it will be used in space. Another product absorbs noise on a highway by using a series of carefully calculated angles to reflect sound. His extraordinary flow of ideas addresses a wide variety of challenges. And the roots of his inspiration lie in a decision to leave school at age 11 before working a series of different jobs. As we follow him at work, we gain insights into the thought processes of a genius with almost no formal schooling.
Jonathan Dimbleby hosts a panel-led studio debate on the raising of the school leaving age and asks whether Mike Tomlinson's 2004 suggestions for school reform have turned out to be right after all. The government has pledged to raise the school leaving age to 18, is introducing a new set of vocation-friendly diplomas at GCSE, and is encouraging schools to rely more heavily on formative assessment. To many, these plans sound remarkably similar to the vision for 14-19 education proposed by the landmark Tomlinson Report which, at the time provoked a storm of controversy among employers, parents and universities, who feared for standards. Now, however, many seem to approve. So, was Tomlinson right? Joining Jonathan on the panel are key figures at the heart of this important debate: schools min...
Yukina is from a small town in the north of Japan. She has made the decision to leave school at 15 and move to the ancient city of Kyoto to follow one of Japan's most traditional professions. Stunningly filmed and with exclusive access, Yukina's journey gives a unique insight into the sacrifice and dedication needed to enter the closed but privileged world of the Geisha. After Japan's economic collapse in the 1990s the world of the geisha was badly affected. The rich clients diminished and with it a profession that dated back hundreds of years. Today there are fewer than 1,000 geisha in the whole of Japan. From the bustling streets of Kyoto we go inside the Okiya, or the geisha house, where Yukina will now live in for the next five years with the Okasan or geisha mother. Discipline is pa...

When a railway worker Narhari Chitalkar living in Puntambe - a small town in Maharashtra - got a son on January 12, 1918 and named him Ramchandra, little did he know that his son would never be called by the plain and simple name 'R.N. Chitalkar'! From the early age young Ramchandra was fascinated by music and drama. He left for Kolhapur after leaving the school in ninth standard and tried his hand at acting. At the age of seventeen he bagged a hero's role in 'Naganand'- a film which bombed heavily at the box-office. After this early setback he moved on to Bombay. His training in classical music from Shankar Rao Sapre came in handy to bag a job as a music assistant in Minerva Movietone where he started working with the then leading music directors Mir Sahib and Bundu Khan. Soon, thanks to ...
