A woman has died after she jumped in front of a train while holding her three-year-old daughter at Harris Park station in Sydney's west on Wednesday afternoon, police say.

The girl remained in a critical condition at Westmead Children's Hospital on Wednesday afternoon. A hospital spokeswoman said on Thursday morning that more information could not be released without parental consent. The woman died at the scene.

Parramatta Local Area Command officers are reviewing CCTV footage of the incident. A NSW police spokesman said an initial review of the footage suggested the woman had jumped trying to self-harm.
