Three super healthy sweet treats Because life is not about depriving

Who said all treats are bad for you? They definitely got it wrong.

“These treats all have their own little added bit of goodness,” says Carla McMillan, healthy cook and co-founder of Bodypass. “Aside of the option of making them sugar free, Matcha green tea is loaded with L-theanine which improves brain function and relieves stress. Matcha contains 100 times more anti oxidants than regular green tea.

Turmeric is one of nature’s most powerful anti-inflammatory and great for your immune system. Cacao or what I like to call the ‘love drug’ actually helps the brain releases serotonin and endorphins, plus along with its aphrodisiac qualities. Its no wonder the Latin name for the cacao tree means ‘food of the gods’. Enjoy.”

Coco matcha cups

matcha

Ingredients:

100g creamed coconut

40g cacao butter

Shredded coconut

1 tsp matcha green tea powder

10 drops stevia or 2 tbsp raw honey

Pinch sea salt flakes

Method:

  1. Find a bowl that will sit nicely over a saucepan. Put a couple of cm of water in the saucepan, but make sure the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water.  Now you have a “Bain Marie”. Bring the water to the boil and turn the heat down to low.
  2. Melt the creamed coconut and cacao butter together. Once it is melted, take off the heat and stir in the honey using a whisk, until it is completely combined. Or if you are going “sugar free”, add the stevia and a pinch of salt.
  3. Pour half the mix into patty cake cases, about a cm in each and set in the freezer.
  4. Mix the matcha green tea powder into the rest of the mix and pour another cm on top of the coconut layer. Set this in the freezer too. Just before it is completely set, sprinkle the tops with shredded coconut so they look super pretty.
  5. Peel off the paper cases and enjoy, guilt free.

Macadamia turmeric treat

tumeric

100g creamed coconut

40g cacao butter

Shredded coconut

12-15 macadamia nuts

1 tsp turmeric powder

½ tsp vanilla bean powder

Pinch sea salt flakes
Method:

  1. Melt the cacao butter and creamed coconut in your Bain Marie (see recipe above for details).
  2. Once melted, remove from heat and whisk in the honey or stevia until it is completely dissolved.
  3. Stir in the turmeric and vanilla bean powder.
  4. Line a backing tray with grease proof paper and pour the mix into the tray so it is about ½ cm thick.
  5. Evenly sprinkle the macadamia nuts aound the tray. Set in the fridge or freezer, depending on how patient you can be … once nearly set sprinkle the top with shredded coconut.

Raw chocolate with roasted hazelnuts

choc

Ingredients:

60g cacao butter

40g raw cacao powder

40g honey

15-20 hazelnuts

Method:

  1. Melt the cacao butter in your Bain Marie (see top recipe for details).
  2. Once melted, remove from heat and whisk in the honey until it is completely dissolved.
  3. Sift the cacao powder in, stirring thoroughly.
  4. Toast your hazelnuts in a baking tray in a 160°C oven for 20-30 minutes.
  5. I bought some chocolate block moulds online that are great because once you pop your set chocolate out, t looks like the real deal. Roughly chop the hazelnuts and sprinkle the roasted hazelnuts into the moulds evenly, then pour the melted chocolate into the moulds. Set in the fridge. Then try not to eat it all in one sitting!
