Police have charged a 23-year-old man of no fixed address with allegedly robbing a Merriwa deli with an axe on Tuesday.

WA Police spokeswoman Ros Weatherall said the man allegedly entered the Hughie Edwards Drive deli in the northern Perth suburb about 11.15am and demanded cash from the man working there.

He left empty-handed but returned soon afterwards, allegedly trying to start the worker's car.

The employee confronted him and the accused allegedly struck him with an axe, cutting his arm and leg and damaging the car.

The accused then fled, causing a nearby daycare centre to go into lockdown as police door-knocked surrounding homes.

Officers arrested him on Wednesday night at a Merriwa property and charged with attempted armed robbery, attempted aggravated armed robbery and acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm.

He will appear at Joondalup Magistrates Court on Thursday.
