A truck has been freed from Queen's Bridge in Queanbeyan after it became wedged on Thursday afternoon, December 17.

Police, council staff, Fire and Rescue and some local mechanics helped to free the truck, by letting air out of the airbags and tyres, Queanbeyan Police acting inspector Mick Handley said.

The main road and the bridge have been reopened following an assessment by a Queanbeyan City Council engineer, which deemed it safe.

The truck became stuck under the bridge shortly before 2pm.

A Roads and Maritime Services structural engineer is travelling from Wollongong to assess the damage to the state-owned road.

Acting inspector Handley said the driver of the truck was coming along Collett Street and has gone under the main bridge over Queanbeyan River.

"The top of the [truck's] pan has got stuck under the last girder of the Queanbeyan bridge," Handley said.

He said the council engineer was confident the bridge was safe to use.

Police will interview the driver and investigate the accident.
