Mitragyna speciosa is a large tree in the Rubiaceae family native to Southeast Asia in the Indochina and Malesia floristic regions. The leaf of the tree has been traditionally used for its medicinal properties and is known as kratom (Thai: กระท่อม). It was first formally documented by the Dutch colonial botanist Pieter Korthals. The genus was given the name Mitragyna by Korthals because the stigmas in the first species he examined resembled the shape of a bishop's mitre. It is botanically related to the genera Corynanthe, Cinchona and Uncaria and shares some similar biochemistry.
Mitragyna speciosa, kratom trees, usually grow to a height of 12–30 ft (3.7–9.1 m) tall and 15 ft (4.6 m) wide, although under the right conditions, certain species can reach up to 40 ft (12 m)–100 ft (30 m) in height. The stem is erect and branching. The leaves of the kratom tree are a dark green colour and can grow to over 7 inches (180 mm) long and 4 inches (100 mm) wide., ovate-acuminate in shape, and opposite in growth pattern.

...Although I must say, at times tobacco has become estranged from my ally list...but knowing this is all personal to the individual, I blame not the tobacco, but rather the way I used it. Some words on the 3, and especially some words on Kratom, since it seems to be harder to find detailed information about. I'm referring to kava and kratom, two of the more unusual offerings at Sawgrass ... Kratom is a little more unusual, as well as controversial ... Kratom is a plant from Thailand that also produces relaxing effects ... Needless to say, there is a bit of controversy about the safety of kratom, and it's even illegal in its home country of Thailand ... Kava and kratom can be served plain, with fruit garnishes, or even in smoothies (to mask the taste)....
